ANNUAL MEETING OF PR

RW Bro Sousa entering Prov Grand Lodge The Annual Meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge
RW Bro Pratt PGM with his escort held at the Royal Hall, Harrogate on 5 May was
another splendid occasion.
David Hayes and Steve Scarre receiving a cheque for £25,000 on behalf of Horticap
These events do not just happen of course, so I
decided to take a look behind the scenes.

Much of the preparation is done well in advance
by the Provincial Grand Secretary and the staff in
the Provincial office, but on the day of the meeting
they are assisted by the Provincial Directors of
Ceremonies and Brethren of the West Riding Acting
Officers Lodge No 9645 acting as Stewards.

The day started for Allen Cass at 6.30 am when
he left home in Brighouse to travel to Harrogate.
Arriving at the Royal Hall at 8.15 am, to find the office
manager Mick Dyson already in attendance, it was
to be a long day; Allen, who has been Chief Steward
for some eight years, did not arrive home again until
some twelve hours later. He may have stayed for
the splendour of the celebratory festive board at the
Majestic Hotel, but needed to get home as it was his
wife’s birthday!

9.15 am saw the arrival of the first of the Directors
of Ceremonies and the Deputy Provincial Grand
Secretary and last minute changes were made to
the seating arrangements.

The Provincial Grand Master arrived just after
ten with one of the distinguished guests, RW Bro
Octavio Pimenta Sousa, Grand Organist of the
Grande Loja Legal de Portugal, who could not help
but be impressed by the magnificent setting of the
Royal Hall.

The rehearsals, both for the Dc’s and later for the
Rulers were definitely needed and as the PGM was
heard to say, “The objective is – we all get on the
stage.”

About an hour before the doors were opened,
the Stewards were given a final briefing and all
was prepared to welcome the many Brethren from
throughout the Province. It was pleasing to see
many Master Masons, who would later receive a
special welcome from the Provincial Grand Master.

Provincial Grand Lodge was opened and
the business dealt with before those present
received an update from the Chairman of the 2017
Festival Committee (see page 17). The PGM was
later to announce the total raised to date to be
£1,675,249.98.

The Provincial Grand Officers were appointed and
invested (details on page 34) and other Brethren
were appointed and promoted.

Provincial Grand Lodge was called off to allow
the PGM to present the 2015 Major Grants from the
PGM’s Fund to representatives of five organisations
(see page 12).

Next came an edifying and inspiring address from
RW Bro Pratt PGM in which he set out enhancements
to be implemented following consultation within the
Province:

Communications will be improved following the
introduction of Adelphi 2 – the Grand Lodge record
keeping system, facilitating more rapid and direct
communication with members.

Future summonses for the annual meeting will be
sent electronically, saving over £1,000 p.a.

No Brother shall be appointed to Acting Office or
promoted to PPJGW unless he has been Exalted
into Royal Arch Masonry.

He went on to talk about the future of Lodges within
the Province, asking “Do we have too many Lodges
and too many buildings?” He believes we do and
whilst not planning to close down or amalgamate
Lodges, asks Brethren to consider whether it is
viable to continue, both as a Lodge or within their
existing building. Doing nothing is not an option.

He talked of standards and traditions and of charity,
thanking Brethren and their families throughout the
Province for the magnificent support given thus far
to the 2017 Festival, before concluding to rapturous

As Provincial Grand Lodge was closed and
Brethren made their way home or to the Majestic
Hotel, the work of the Stewards was not over as they
cleared the Hall of items left behind and ensured
that all furniture and equipment was safely stored
until the next meeting on 3 May 2016.

If you have not yet attended an Annual Meeting
of Provincial Grand Lodge, I recommend that you
do so and when you do, spare a thought for those
people who have worked tirelessly behind the
scenes to ensure that your visit is such an enjoyable
occasion.

by a bell, formed from a gun cartridge,
which was hanging therein. Upon
enquiring of its significance Mick was
told, “Ring the bell, and buy the round!”
Having done so, Mick decided that a bell
was needed in the bar at Willow Royd.
Unfortunately, before he could arrange
this he fell ill and passed away in May last
year, aged just 50 years.

Having heard of this sad loss to Savile
Lodge, the officers and soldiers of 5
Regiment Royal Artillery, as a mark of
respect, donated an artillery cartridge
which has been converted into a bell
engraved with the crest of Savile Lodge
and inscribed, ‘In Memory of W Bro

The bell was presented by now Sergeant
Major David Darby in the presence
of Mick’s widow Mrs Steph Uttley in

what he perceived Freemasonry had to
offer, Dave asked to become a member
of Savile Lodge.

Jubilee for Third Fifty Years
Generation Mason and more for
Keighley Lion

A past president and active member of Keighley Lions,
Keith Hardwick Trott, celebrated 50 years as a member
of Keighley Lodge No 3463 in February 2013. Known to
many as the quietest, most softly spoken Freemason in
the Province, the report of this achievement has only
just come to light.

When attending the Lodge to make the presentation
of the jubilee certificate D Stuart Cummins APGM took
Keith through his early life from the Saltburn area of
North Yorkshire to the village of Harden near Bingley
and to East Morton, where he now lives.

He served as secretary of the Leeds & District Royal Arch Council
for 10 years. He is a member of many other orders, in all of
which he has attained high rank, none more so than as Deputy
Grand Sovereign of the Red Cross of Constantine, a position he
occupied for several years.

Michael married and had three children and now has seven
grandchildren. He remarried some 10 years ago to Jenny. During
his life time he has enjoyed a varied selection of pastimes from
tennis to cricket umpire, to sailing on Ullswater for 10 years and
eventually in the open waters of the Irish Sea for 35 years.

He retired in 1991 but carried on working as a locum for several
years and was a member of the Leeds Health Authority with
specific responsibility for mental health.

In addition to his pharmacy work he was a Magistrate on the
Leeds Bench for 25 years and also served in the appeal court.

SPRING BANK LADIES Boost for Upstage
LUNCHEON CLUB Academy, Ripon

Upstage Academy in Ripon was formed in 2008 with the aim
of providing young people in rural areas with the opportunity
to develop their skills, confidence and ability and to realise the
potential of their talents.

The Academy teaches a wide range of skills in the performing
arts, including acting, dancing and singing, covering a wide
range of ages; currently 3 to 18 year olds.

Over the years we have had quarterly luncheons, all
thoroughly enjoyed:- We had speakers quizzes and lots of
conversation and laughter.

A special event was the Millennium Dinner, to which we
invited our menfolk!

Donations of £10,000 were made to the masonic charity
fund and various speakers also donated instead of receiving
a fee.

The committee (of many different characters) have become
friends and have all worked well together.

Sadly due to the impending closure of Spring Bank Masonic

Our recent “Final Luncheon” was sad in many ways, but
then all good things eventually have to come to an end.

Lodge Liaison Officers Birthday

A recently posed question asked a number of points regarding Lodge Liaison Officers. Who Centenarian
and what they are?

visits, the type of meeting he visited, general remarks commenting on, if applicable,
the discipline within the Lodge, standard of ritual, social activities, instruction
provided for brethren, the Lodge premises and the future wellbeing of the Lodge.
This is general assessment and should not include comments about individual
members. These give the APGM’s a valuable insight into the Lodges in their Area.
As most APGM’s have responsibility for a goodly number of Lodges in their Area
they are unable to visit each during the year and gain proper insight into the state of
the Lodge. Any general issues raised in the reports can be picked up by the APGM
for further action if considered necessary. Any specific problems should already
have been reported under item (f).

e) Most APGM’s hold an annual meeting with their Area Liaison Officers to discuss
any issues or problems that may have occurred during the year. As part of the
Honours system the Liaison Officers report on Brethren in the Lodges who are
being considered for appointment and promotion within the Province. In addition
they also attend a meeting of the Area Liaison Officers where they are able to offer
valuable comment on the full list of Honours prior to the APGM’s consideration of the
individual Brethren.

f) He has direct access to the APGM should any difficulties or problems occur within
the Lodge.

The Lodge Liaison Officer is not there to:
Interfere in Lodge business.
Tell Lodges what to do.
Tell tales on what is going on.
Attend Committee meetings.

The Liaison Officers throughout the Province are doing a sterling job and almost all enjoy the
full support of their Lodges. They are considered to be the friends of the Lodges and usually
build up strong fraternal links. They are a valuable resource available to the Lodges within the
Masonic structure and vital link in our Masonic chain.

Tony Llewellyn, APGM Area 5.
