Letter from the Editor
Hello all you bnei buzzers
I trust you had a fantastic week filled with only the most fun things. One of those incredible things most
definitely being our Mifgash Launch on Wednesday night!
I hope your Purim outfit is picked out and ready to go for the Purim festivities- beginning with the AWESOME, UNMISSABLE and FABULOUS Bnei Akiva Purim Party and Gurim Purim Carnival!
“And you shall command the children of Israel that they shall take for you pure, pressed olive oil for illumination, to kindle the lamp”
The oil for the Menorah had to be completely pure, without any addition of foreign substances. It couldn’t even have the left over olive particles floating in it. Even though these ‘impurities’ can be filtered out later on, the pasuk tells us that the oil HAD TO be absolutely pure from the start. Therefore, the olive oil was made by gently pressing each olive, until the tiniest drop of pure oil came out. After that tiny bit came out, the rest of the olive would be crushed and used for Korbanot.
There is a powerful lesson we can learn from the fact that only the first pure drops of oil were allowed to light the Menorah and then all the left over oil and sediment could be used for the Korbanot...
While a Jew makes sure that he eats Kosher, he might be less concerned with the ‘food for the intellect’ that enters his mind in the form of mass media or literature.
The oil for the Menorah represents the intellect which needs to be 100% pure! The oil for the Menorah was to be superior to the oil for the sacrifices which represents ‘physical food’.
The Torah teaches us here that our minds must be fed only with information that is the purest.
While the average car can be filled with any type of petrol, high class, luxury cars can only be filled with premium petrol. Filling the car with inferior petrol can ruin the engine.
So too, the average person may fill himself up with all sorts of things, but the JEW has the most delicate soul which can only handle the purest and finest of everything.
When one is filled with only the finest ‘petrol’, he is able to reach tremendous heights!

A Vort in short HACHSHARA 2018
Parshat Tetzaveh
This weeks parsha goes into a lengthy discussion regarding the בגדי כהונה- the garments of the Kohein. At first glance it would appear that the clothes of the Kohanim are perceived only as an external factor. However, the passukim place great significance on the בגדי כהונה, going into considerable detail of each stitch and elaborating on their purpose. We therefore come to see that the splendor of the clothing of the Kohein Gadol not only makes him fitting for the service of HaShem but also plays an important role in emulating his middot and thereby showing a deeper, more spiritual aspect of his clothing.
This leads us to ask the question: what is the purpose of clothing?
There are three main functions of clothing in our day to day lives. Firstly, clothing is there to protect us. In summer we wear clothes to shield us from the hot sun and in winter they protect us from the unbearable cold. Secondly, with the clothes one wears one is able to portray oneself in the way that one desires. Lastly, clothing differentiates man from the animal world. We see this from when Adam and Chava sinned. During their time in Gan Eden they were not clothed in any form of garments as they saw each other as souls, yet after they sinned they became embarrassed of their physical appearance and began to wear clothes. In a sense then, clothes can actually mask the spiritual nature of people by focusing ones attention on the more physical aspects of the actual garments. We tend to judge people by the physical clothes they wear and not the spiritual nature of the way in which they dress as being representative of their middot.
Ironically, the essence of clothing differs in the chag of Purim. For many the minhag to dress up on this festival is simply for ones enjoyment. Yet, on a more profound level, this custom allows one to really search to find ones true self. By hiding behind a mask or a costume one adopts a new identity. It highlights a key theme of Purim that things are not always what they seem to be, we need to always be digging deeper to find true meaning and see HaShem's hand in our everyday lives. This new identity encourages one to search for ones true being and therefore fulfilling the purpose of Purim, which is לגלות את הנסתר- to discover the hidden.
Returning to the clothing of the Kohein Gadol, we find some interesting lessons. On the one hand the Kohein Gadol's clothing atones for different aveirot. For example the kettoret atones for murder while the ephod atones for idol worship (Gemorah Zevachim 88b). Just like a body wears physical clothes so too does ones soul wear 'spiritual' clothing. The clothing of the soul are ones middot which manifest in ones physical appearance.
Evidently then, from the Kohein Gadol and Purim we have two interesting ideas around clothes that relate to both the physical and spiritual nature of people and how we relate to them based on their clothing.
From the Kohein Gadol we see that clothing can be elevated to a higher spiritual level by representing the values and the middot of the wearer and not just focusing on their mere physical appearance. Yet from Purim, we learn not to 'judge a book by its cover' but to dig deeper and find the true meaning and essence of a person beneath their physical exterior.
Our goal then is to continually strive to elevate our physical being to a more spiritual being and merge our gashmius and ruchnius.
Shabbat Shalom

State of Bnei-Tion
Before we begin, Bnei Akiva JHB would like to wish Cyril Mazeltov on being elected president. The Vice Presidency however, is still up for grabs. Maybe this is finally Adam Rab's chance to be a Sgan?
It's been another eventful week in the shtetl. The Orot boys are once again on the hunt. Dean Chaitowitz is having his name officially changed to Dean "Chise"owitz #victoriasecret.
In our Haddies update, things are heating up. Berno hasn't been able to sleep, Eli is applying for Shorashim as a back up and all the Madrichot have started yentzing Winer in order to get a head start. We think that a Hadracha Hunger Games should be initiated in order to sort this out.
That's all for this week, Good Shabbas!
