Letter from the Editor
Hello all you bnei buzzers
How was your week? Have you started exams? If so, I hope theyre going well and good luck. If not, then good luck with learning. If your’e already finished... Shkoyach!
Have you signed up for Winter Camp or Seminar? If not- my suggestion is that you sign up fast- you don’t wanna miss out- trust ;)
’ ֚ ֶא ֶפ ס ִכּ י ־ ֣ ַע ז ָה ֔ ָע ם ‘
'But the people that dwells in the land is powerful...’
On the surface, it seems that the meraglim (spies) did nothing wrong in describing what they had seen while scouting out the promised land. The spies had been sent to make their own observations; to report whether the land was good or bad and if the people living there were strong or weak.
In fact... that is exactly what they reported! They gave over the truth as they had perceived it!
Q. So then, what was their sin?
Imagine:
It's 9 months before camp and you're already behind on making your volleyball team, so you start grafting! You finally manage to round up the most perfect team, with the most incredible players.
But you still have one spot to fill.
You have a certain guy, called Daniel, in mind, and think he would be perfect.
So, you ask around and someone says to you 'Daniel is an absolute tilt player, BUT his serve could do with some work’. Your decision to ask Daniel to play on your team has now been compromised, as you only want the best of the best of the best!
The boy that told you about Daniel, is implying that the 1 negative volleyball skill that Daniel has, outweighs all his positive ones!
The word BUT, negates all that was previously stated.
A. Although the meraglim gave over the report exactly as they had seen it, the fact that they mentioned the word אפס-ֶ but, revealed that they had a personal agenda.
Rambam says that by using a word that implied a contradiction to their first 2 sentences, the meraglim were in effect, telling the Bnei Yisrael that no matter how rich and blessed the land was, it was just beyond their reach! (The people who lived there were too strong and their cities, too invincible)
It was the way the meraglim phrased their report that brought about their punishment.
We can apply the above idea when complimenting someone too...
If a person says 'The steak was unbelievable, but it tasted a bit raw' or 'he's an absolutely tilt player, but his serve could do with some work', the person giving the compliment, implies that the positive is irrelevant in comparison to the negative.
This is how one little word, can kill your ability to influence others!
Shabbat Shalom holy people Hannah Swartz

A Vort in short MTa 2018
In this week’s Parsha, we learn about the famous incident of the spies, who were sent to check out Eretz Yisrael and bring back a report of this “land flowing with milk and honey”. Instead, they returned with sour reviews of the land. This caused panic amongst the nation- they lost the desire to enter the Land. As punishment, the Jewish people had to spend 40 years in the desert. This was an event that changed Jewish history. So, what was so devastatingly bad about what the spies did?
It was a tragic downfall of great leaders. Moshe sent 12 spies, each one a prince of his tribe. Why did Moshe choose the spies to be the Nesiim?
According to the Yalkut Meam Loez, Hashem told Moshe to choose men of rank and of substance who will tell the truth. He had high expectations of these leaders.
The Torah proceeds to list the names of each Nasi chosen as a spy. Why does it go to that effort?
Rabbi David Feinstein says that each name revealed a unique ability about that spy, making him fit to spy out the land.
For example, Shamuah’s name reveals he was a good listener, therefore he was expected to listen to the commands of Hashem. Yet he sinned, by listening to the wrong voice, that of his evil inclination. The spies had huge potential and talents, but they used these qualities for bad.
All of us are spies too, sent on a mission in this world for Hashem. He trusts us each individually, since we all have our own special abilities that we can use in this world. It’s up to us to use them for good, rather than diverting them towards bad.

Unity Day-יום האחדות
Unity Day was marked this year in Israel on June 6 for the fourth time.
The Idea of this day was born out of the desire to preserve and strengthen the sense of great unity that happened in Israeli society in the
summer of 2014. A unity that was created with great sadness following the abduction of the three boys (Eyal, Gilad and Naftali) and Operation Tzuk Eitan. The organizers of the day felt the need to bring people together and to connect different populations, sectors and groups within Israeli society.
On this day a few people and organizations are getting the "Unity Award", the 2018 winners are:
Taglit (Birthright) - A Zionist educational organization established to strengthen the ties of Diaspora youth with Israel and their connection to Judaism.
TEC Center (Center for Technology, Education and Cultural Diversity) - The first initiative in Israel for multi-cultural and collaborative learning processes of the various sectors through computers and advanced technologies.
Kololam - A Musical-Social Project of Mass singing "Kololam" events take place all throughout the country and invite the general public to join them.
