SHWETA SINGH 4 NEWSLETTER | VOL 01 | JAN 2023 Power, as one of the most critical components of infrastructure, is critical for a nation's economic growth and welfare. The existence and development of adequate power infrastructure are essential for the sustained growth of the Indian economy. The fundamental principle of India’s power industry has been to provide universal access to affordable power in a sustainable way. Electricity demand in the country has increased rapidly and is expected to rise further in the years to come. In order to meet the increasing demand for electricity in the country, massive additions to the installed generating capacity is required. India is the third-largest producer and consumer of electricity worldwide, with an installed power capacity of 410.339 GW as of December 31, 2022. As on December 31, 2022, India’s installed renewable energy capacity (including hydro) stood at 167.75 GW, representing 40.88% of the overall installed power capacity. Solar energy is expected to contribute 63.30 GW, followed by 47.93 GW from wind power, 10.21 GW from biomass, 4.94 GW from small hydropower, and 46.85 GW from hydropower. With electricity generation (including renewable sources) of 1223.14 BU in India between April-December 2022, the country witnessed a growth of 9.83% YoY. Experts say power consumption and demand will further increase in January due to the use of heating appliances, especially in the northern parts of the country, and further improvement in economic activities. The peak power demand met, which is the highest supply in a day, rose to 205.03 gigawatt (GW) in December 2022. The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) estimates India’s power requirement to grow to reach 817 GW by 2030. Also, by 2029- 30, CEA estimates that the share of renewable energy generation will increase from 18% to 44%, while that of thermal energy is expected to reduce from 78% to 52%. The government has planned to establish a renewable energy capacity of 500 GW by 2030. The Power Sector in India at a Glance Ms. Shweta Singh Asst. Manager, Corporate Reference: Power Sector at a Glance ALL INDIA | Government of India | Ministry of Power (powermin.gov.in) India's electricity consumption grows 11% to 121.19 billion units in December - Times of India (indiatimes.com)
SHWETA SINGH 5 NEWSLETTER | VOL 01 | JAN 2023 Climate change is a real concern, and the power sector is one of the major contributors to it globally. Both Central and State Government have time and again shown their commitment to the energy transition and their focus on renewables to decarbonize the way we operate. In the COP-26 summit held in Glasgow in 2021, the Government of India made certain applaudable announcements as below: • Increasing the country’s non-fossil energy capacity to 500 GW • Meeting 50% of our energy requirements from renewable sources • Achieving net-zero emissions by 2070 • Reducing the total projected carbon emissions of the economy by One Billion Tonnes • Reducing the carbon intensity of the economy by 45% In its endeavour to achieve a sustainable future in line with governments’ action plans, the company is also doing its bit by moving towards the adoption of clean energy for its consumers. We are continuously increasing the share of clean energy in our energy mix so that the consumers of Greater Noida can get clean power. We have increased the share of clean energy from various renewable sources, such as solar, wind, hydro, etc., across the country. In the current fiscal year, the share of clean energy in our total energy basket has increased to around 35%. The same is expected to skyrocket in the coming years in order to ensure a sustainable future and other societal benefits. The company’s commitment is also in line with the demands of various industrial and commercial consumers who want to increase the share of clean energy in their energy basket to manufacture products. It is noteworthy to mention that manufacturing practices across the country are moving towards cleaner production so that they can enter new markets and meet their sustainability targets at the same time. Recently, the company got approval for a green tariff option for its consumers. Under the Green Tariff, all consumers, except domestic and agricultural consumers, can opt for green energy from the company by paying an additional Rs 0.54 per kWh. The above proposition will open multiple avenues for the company in terms of earning additional revenue and, at the same time, fulfilling the demand of consumers as an ideal service provider. 84% 3% 11% 2% Hydro Wind Solar Bagasse Mr. Priyank Pundir, Asst. SHWETA SINGH 6 NEWSLETTER | VOL 01 | JAN 2023 Evolving paradigm of 'unauthorised use of electricity ' jurisprudence “It is not everything said by a Judge while giving judgment that constitutes a precedent. The only thing in a Judge’s decision binding a party is the principle upon which the case is decided and for this reason it is important to analyse a decision and isolate from it, the ratio decidendi.” The Hon’ble Supreme Court had established a thought-provoking precedent in Kerala State Electricity Board & Ors. (‘Appellant’) v. Thomas Joseph alias Thomas M.J. & Ors. (‘Respondents’), Civil Appeal No. 9252-9253 of 2022 vide its judgement dated 16th December, 2022, wherein the Hon’ble Supreme Court extended the definition of unauthorised use of electricity to include excess load (greater than contracted load). The Hon’ble High Court upheld the provisions of the Kerala Electricity Supply Code, 2014 which provides Regulation 153 (15) which states that “Unauthorised additional load in the same premises and under same tariff shall not be reckoned as ‘unauthorised use of electricity’.” However, the Hon’ble Apex Court held that it is important to keep in mind that, where a rule or regulation is directly inconsistent with a mandatory provision of the statute, then, of course, the task of the Court is simple and easy. However, where the contention is the inconsistency or non-conformity of the rule with the object and scheme of the parent Act, the Court should proceed with caution before declaring the same to be invalid. Rules or regulation cannot be made to supplant the provisions of the enabling Act but to supplement it. What is permitted is the delegation of ancillary or subordinating legislative functions, or, what is fictionally called, a power to fill up details. Hon’ble Supreme Court to set right the impugned judgment of the High Court and bring in tune the principles embodied in its decision in Executive Engineer v. M/s Sri Seetaram Ricemill, 2011, declared that Regulation 153(15) of the Code 2014 framed by the Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission (‘Commission’) is inconsistent with Section 126 of the Act. If the Regulation 153(15) is to be given effect, then the same would frustrate the very object of Section 126 of the Act. The High Court in its impugned judgment says that Regulation 153(15) does not lead to any loss of revenue. The stance of the Commission also is that there is no loss of revenue if the Regulation 153(15) is permitted to be operated. However, the Hon’ble Apex Court was of the view that it is not just the question of loss of revenue. At the cost of repetition, Hon’ble Apex Court emphasised on the fact that overdrawal of electricity is prejudicial to the public at large as it may throw out of gear the entire supply system, undermining its efficiency, efficacy and even-increasing voltage fluctuations. In overall view of the matter, Hon’ble Supreme Court concluded that the finding recorded by the High Court is not sustainable in law. The Hon’ble Supreme Court concluded that the Regulation 153(15) deserves to be declared invalid being inconsistent with the provisions of Section 126 of the Act 2003. Consequently, the Apex Court has expanded the definition of unauthorised use of electricity to include unauthorised additional load in the same premises and under same tariff category. SHWETA SINGH 36 NEWSLETTER | VOL 01 | JAN 2023 Creative Writing This is not the article that I am writing; these are my earnings from rigorous study. For me, getting a graduation degree or job is not the outcome of my studies. In my opinion, if you cannot do anything with your knowledge or studies for the society that gives you all the knowledge, then you will die in debt to society. Throughout my studies, I generate numerous ideas, the realisation of which is my ultimate life goal. Following are the two of them: 1. Piezoelectric Generator: This is the generator that will convert sound energy into electric energy. As sound is readily available around us in the form of noise pollution, we can conserve it by using an array of sensitive piezoelectric crystals that convert sound wave pressure into electric voltage, which will be stored in batteries. If this device is realised, we will successfully add another source of electricity. We will use this device on congested roads, construction sites, etc. This will be a lifechanging renewable energy source for all of us. 2. Heartbeat translator: Each person's heart is unique, and each heart responds differently in different situations. If we plot a specific person's heartbeat graph, we will see that each graph is unique for a specific condition. Using the nature of our hearts, we can create a device that uses artificial intelligence to provide information about a person's surroundings. The main purpose of making this device is to prevent rape. As an example, suppose this device in the form of a finger ring or locket is with the woman, and when the situation of danger arises, this will automatically protect the woman by sending a message to the person responsible and performing other actions that we can imagine on the spot. This device will surely be helpful in other research fields as well. Above are the two ideas that I want to share with all of you to inspire us to pay off the debt of our society. As engineers, we are not limited to earning money, eating, and sleeping. I strongly encourage all of my readers to send me their valuable suggestions and feedback via email; this will benefit society. Apart from the spirit of competition in me, where participating, achieving a purpose, and excelling with fellow workers are important in my own way of life, in my personal life I learned to stop comparing myself with others in terms of achieving something, and after that, life became better. And I'm constantly learning new skills. This is an observation that is a reality for everyone to realise: comparison is endless; there is no end to comparison, and instead of finding or reaching that end, the life at hand has many more experiences, learnings, or joys to live with. SHWETA SINGH 38 NEWSLETTER | VOL 01 | JAN 2023 Just as the car balances on four wheels, we need to balance four crucial areas of our lives: Our Personal Life Our relationship Our professional lives and Our Social Contribution However, a deeper aspect of balance that resides within us is about our values and attitudes. That attitude is like air in the tyre. In the event that there is not enough air in the tyre, we will not reach our desired destination. As we balance ourselves externally and internally, we will not go off the steering wheel-our spirituality. If wheels are aligned and pressure is fine, but we don’t have a steering wheel in hand, we will not be able to reach where we want to go. It was the Buddha who said, "Just as a candle cannot burn without a fire, we cannot live without a spiritual life." Spirituality brings purpose to our lives and gives us a destination worth going to. There are times we may feel empty or lost, and we may feel that we don’t know where our life is taking us. In those difficult times, we must hold the steering wheel of spirituality tightly. The steering wheel of spirituality comprises four parts: • Our spiritual practise (sadhana) • The association we maintain (Sanga) • Our character (Sadachar) and • Our service to God and others (Seva) When all these aspects of the steering wheel are adhered to properly, they give us the ability to drive the car of our lives towards its destination. In our first article, I will mention only the first part of the steering wheel, i.e., meditation (sadhana). Meditation (sadhana) is done to achieve mindfulness, i.e., becoming aware of our thoughts and emotions and bringing our attention to the present moment. With increasing competition and demands in the workplace, mindfulness is more relevant than ever. Mindfulness will enhance our ability to tame our ego and manage our emotions for the greater good of our team and organisation. As we learn to become more aware of our thoughts and feelings, we begin to understand the motive behind our speech and actions. This increased awareness can be incredibly helpful in dealing with conflicts or during a stressful meeting when our perspective is being challenged or even disregarded. Meditation and mindfulness can strengthen our minds and allow us to prevent our ego from taking control and making us act in ways that could damage our reputation and career. It is vital for us to remain in touch with our emotions and feelings and understand how they are influencing our actions. We learn how to turn off the switch when we start to lose our cool because once the flood gates of anger open, it will be too late. • Mindfulness in the workplace creates an environment where battles aren’t driving the company down. • It’s a system where individuals are willing to put aside their own self-interest for the sake of the greater good. • where individuals are willing to appreciate the contributions of their co-workers instead of feeling threatened by them. • It’s an environment where constructive feedback is balanced with a healthy dose of appreciation. This programme is being used by many organisations like Google, General Mills, etc. It definitely takes discipline to start sitting and meditating. Breathing, focusing, and expressing kindness to others, especially to those who haven’t been kind, is not easy at first. Once we begin and experience the benefits, it will be equally difficult for us to stop. Meditation isn’t just for monks anymore. Stress and anxiety are two of the most unavoidable side effects of our daily lives. Because we are unaware of the negative effects that stress can have on our lives, some people suffer as a result. Like a commander general who is very vigilantly watching for the progress of the enemy’s camp. Similarly, we should vigilantly watch our thoughts and, if required, change them. If not kept under check, too much stress and anxiety can lead to depression. According to the American Institute of Stress, 46 percent of our stress comes from our workplace. This is so because most of us spend more than half of our waking time at work or commuting to work. Keeping balance in all situations is of utmost importance, as it leads to happiness and completion. It is this balance that will make our journey through life smooth and effective. If we are caught in a heavy downpour, it’s nearly impossible to stay dry. Similarly, it’s hard not to get caught up in the challenges and negative situations of the world. Winning over Stress & Anxiety Mrs. Anshu Awasthi Dy. Manager, Finance Department
