Martin Luther King Jr
Martin Luther King Jr was is a well known
leader in the civil rights movement. He used
non-violent protest which got him the Nobel
Peace Prize. Martin Luther KIng Jr has his own
holiday on January 21st and on this day kids
don’t go to school. He was born in Atlanta and
graduated high school at 15 and went to
Morehouse college. Martin Luther KIng Jr is
also the founder of the SCLC. You also may
know Martin Luther King because of his “I have
a dream speech”. Martin Luther King Jr was a
spokesperson for the successful Montgomery
Bus Boycott.
SCLC
This organization was founded by Martin Luther
King Jr. This organization was initially created in
reaction to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. After
this event they organized protests and
opportunities for the economic improvement of
african americans and blacks throughout the south.
This organization is still known to this day. They
focus mostly on health care, prison reform, fair
treatment ect.
SNCC
The SNCC stood for Student Nonviolent
Coordinating Committee. It was pronounced
“snick” This was considered a civil rights
organizations. It was formed in North Carolina.
The SNCC focused on organizing peaceful
non-violent protests. The people apart of this
group were in high school or college. They were
known for their freedom rides and sit-ins. They’re
also known for the Albany Movement.
March On Washington
The March On Washington was a huge event.
Martin Luther King Jr had a huge part of this and
gave his “I have a dream speech” there. He made
this speech to encourage civil rights. The March
On Washington then became a big deal after his
speech. The purpose of this event was to push for
civil rights legislation. It was also for jobs and
freedom.
Albany Movement
The Albany Movement came after the
Montgomery Bus Boycott. The SNCC decided to
protest against the segregation laws in Albany
Georgia. Martin Luther King Jr became even more
popular after the Albany Movement. The Albany
Movement was considered unsuccessful by the
SNCC. Chief Pritchett went against them in a
non-violent way. A lot of people were arrested but
were released immediately by Martin Luther King
Jr.
William Hartsfield
William Hartsfield was an active supporter in
Atlantas racial tolerance. He was the mayor of
Atlanta and was the mayor longer than any other
mayor in Atlanta. His support of the civil rights
movement kept atlanta from racial violence. This
means that atlanta didnt have any violent protest.
He began his political career.when he was elected
to the Atlanta city council. He opened Atlanta’s
first airport in 1925. Hartsfield retired from public
office in 1961. He died in 1971 and that’s when they
renames the Atlanta airport to Hartsfield
International in his honor.
Maynard Jackson
In 1973 he won the election to be mayor because
he had 60% of voters. He is best known as Atlanta’s
first black mayor. While he was the mayor he
expanded the airport that we now know as
hartsfield-jackson atlanta international airport. He
helped improve racial equality. He accomplished
this by hiring black police officers and gave more
business to black contractors.
Brown v. The Board Of Education
The verdict of the brown v. The Board Of
Education was that it caused schools to integrate.
Integrate meant the opposite of segregation. The
Brown. V Board of education was a Supreme Court
case in which ruled that segregation of children in
public schools isn’t right l. Oliver brown was an
African American who filed the suit against the
board of education. His daughter was denied to go
to a all white elementary school. In the beginning
everyone was against him but later on they agreed.
Georgia wasn’t happy with this.
Lester Maddox
Lester Maddox was governor of Georgia. He had a
lot of supporters because of his segregationist
stand. Lester Maddox opened the pickrick
cafeteria. This restaurant was only for white
customers because he refused to serve african
americans. Inside his cafeteria he had labels saying
“make a wish for segregation”. One time he chased
three blacks with a gun just because they entered
his cafeteria. When the courts upheld the civil
rights act, he was found in contempt of court
because of he refused to serve black people. He was
fined $200 per day and two months later he closed
his cafeteria rather than being integrated.
John Lewis
John Lewis was a U.S representative. John Lewis
was the chief of the student nonviolent
coordinating committee(sncc). Lewis led more
than 600 matches across the Edmund Pettus
Bridge in Selma, Alabama. He was beaten by
Alabama state soldiers and this day was known as
“Bloody Sunday”. This event brought much needed
attention to civil rights movement.
Ivan Allen Jr
Ivan Allen Jr was Atlanta’s mayor for 8 years. On
his first day as mayor he had all of the white and
“colored’ signs removed from city hall and
desegregated the buildings cafeteria. Ivan Allen
worked with Martin Luther KIng Jr. Allen was best
known for his support of bringing major league
sports to the city. He brought the Braves in 1966.
The Braves were Atlanta’s baseball team. The
Atlanta Falcons were Atlanta’s football team, and
the Hawks were Atlanta’s basketball team. Ivan
Allen Jr. had a big part in transportation. He
created interstate 85 and M.A.R.T.A
Civil Rights Act Of 1964
The civil rights act of 1964 ended discrimination in
a lot of places. This act was created to make
discrimination against someone or a group of
people illegal. This act gave a lot of people hope for
equality. The civil rights act of 1964 gave many
people opportunities. This act allowed every race
and color to go to the same school together.
Andrew Young
Andrew Young served in Georgia as congressman ,
ambassador, and mayor of Atlanta. He helped
organize the SCLC. He became the first black
congressman since reconstruction in 1972. He was
Named ambassador to the united nations by
Jimmy carter. His career brought the olympics in
1996 to Atlanta Georgia.
Jimmy Carter
Jimmy Carter has done a lot for the state of
Georgia and the United States. He was the first
senate of Georgia. Jimmy Carter also served as
second term as senate. He had mixed views from
everyone. Jimmy carter then became governor. As
governor he organized the state government and
improved the educational system.Carter also
improved mental heart systems. He gave women
and minorities more more government positions
and after this he became president.
Olympics Of 1996
The Olympics Of 1996 were hosted in Atlanta,
Georgia. It brought a lot of people all around the
world. Due to the olympics being hosted in
Atlanta, they built new existing sports venues,
repaired its sidewalks, built public parks, added
more hotel rooms, and revitalized the downtown.
The olympics being hosted in Atlanta had its
benefits.. For example the games earned 5.1 billion
for the city and state.
Immigration
Atlanta was growing rapidly. New people came
from all over the world. Much of this population
were immigrants . These immigrants made money
for Georgia. They owned businesses like dry
cleaners. These small businesses make good money
for the local community.
