Giving Back

“Giving is not just about making a donation. It is about making a difference”

-Kathy Calvin, CEO-United Nations Foundation

A special thank you to all the physicians privileged in the department for their annual contribution to the
resident fund. Your generosity has allowed us to purchase items for the residents which are not possible
through departmental funding. It has allowed us to purchase furnishings for the resident room, books, resident
graduation, educational conferences and subscriptions to name a few.

We would like to recognize the following alumni supporters through the years with much gratitude and
appreciation.

Douglas Holden MD Richard Parker MD David Godfried MD

Robert Kayal MD David Abrutyn MD Diana Contreras MD

Please consider adding your name to our Alumni page by donating today to the LIJ Orthopaedic Trust Fund by
sending your donation to Janice Vetrano payable to LIJ Orthopaedic Trust Fund.

Medical Mission

The 2017 orthopaedic medical mission to the Dominican Republic was
definitely our most successful one to date since it's inception 3 years ago. This
year, like every other year, was lead by Dr. Neil Watnik (LIJ Attending
Orthopaedic Surgeon), along with residents Jimmy Mullen (4th year
Orthopaedic resident), Yoni Berkowitz (5th year Orthopaedic resident), LIJ
Scrub Tech Martine Sigue, and orthopaedic device representative Brian Wright.
We performed 15 much needed surgeries over our 5 operative days. The DR
mission is always a challenging one, given the complex cases we routinely
encounter combined with the lack of resources and proper equipment.
Nevertheless, it is an incredibly rewarding experience as, as the patients are
truly grateful for the services for which we feel honored to have provided.

So what’s NEW?

First Annual Orthopaedic Research Symposium

In 2017, an initiative set forth by the Orthopaedic System-wide research committee was to host a first annual
research competition amongst our residency programs. Residents from the Lenox Hill and LIJ program submitted
their manuscripts to a centralized committee in which papers were graded and ranked. The top 10 manuscripts
were then presented at the Symposium on May 11th 2017, hosted at LIJ Medical Center. Orthopaedics leaders,
attendings and researchers from both programs were in attendance. We are proud to say that both first and
second place was awarded to our residents.

3D Design and Innovation Lab

In late 2017 Northwell approved a new system wide medical modeling and surgical planning core, the “3D Design
and Innovation Lab”, from within the orthopedics research laboratory. The lab is tasked at providing state of the
art medical modeling and surgical planning solutions, medical education, and research and development.
Additionally the facility will be used to advance the development of 3D printed patient specific regenerative
medical treatments with partners at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. The lab has acquired over a
dozen 3D printers including a first of its kind automatic Formcell 3D Printer and a state-of-the-art 6 axis 3D
Bioprinter. This printer will be operated in conjunction with the orthopedics research lab and the 3D lab to help
further advancements in patient specific tissue engineering of bone and cartilage.

Dear Janice,
Words can't describe the level of gratitude and appreciation we have for you. Over these past five years you
have helped us in countless ways. From the microscopic details of our individual needs to the macroscopic
planning and logistics of our program, you have kept us and this residency in line every step of the way, ensuring
success. We can't thank you enough for your dedication and commitment. With your help, we have all secured
excellent fellowships for which we will always be grateful. Our experience at LIJ was unforgettable, and it would
not have been possible without you.
