© Global Mediastreet Sdn. Bhd. (762284-U) PB © Global Mediastreet Sdn. Bhd. (762284-U) 19 In this reading section, you will have to answer questions in three parts. These include information transfer, meaning of words and completing a passage with a choice of sentences provided. All these questions will test your comprehension of the passage in order to be able to pick out the required answer for each question. You must take note that for Part 3 and Part 4, there is a limit to the number of words in your answer, three words for Part 3 and fi ve words for Part 4. Here are a few simple steps you can take to make comprehension easier on yourself: READ THE QUESTIONS FIRST If you read the questions before reading the passage, you will be able to know what the questions are asking of you. Then when you read the passage, you will be able to look out for the key points. READ THE TEXT SLOWLY Rushing through a comprehension passage may cause you to miss out on essential information or supporting context. If there are parts you do not understand, read them again. Try to break it up into smaller parts if it will help you understand better. UNDERLINE/HIGHLIGHT THE KEY POINTS OF THE TEXT This serves two purposes – it makes you pay attention to the key ideas, and it also lets you check your answers faster. LOOK AROUND THE KEY POINTS Sometimes, supporting information is located in more than one place. Read before and after the key points in order to look for supporting evidence and context that can help you ensure that your answer is correct. In some cases, you may have to infer the answer. This means that the answer is not directly stated in the passage but comes from understanding the message conveyed. DOUBLE CHECK YOUR ANSWERS Read the questions again carefully. Sometimes you may have assumed the question wanted something that it did not. Does your answer fi t into what the question is looking for? Is your answer supported by information in the text? Drought Hits Selangor A drought is a natural disaster. It usually happens when a place faces a shortage of water due to lack of rain. Drought is dangerous to mankind and wildlife. In 2014, the dry spell caused a drought in various states in Malaysia, especially Selangor. Many of the reservoirs that supplied water to millions of households were at critical water levels. This dry spell lasted for a few months. The state government resorted to water rationing in Selangor. This aff ected about 60,000 households. This resulted in many people complaining about the situation. However, the only solution was for it to rain. Planes were on standby to conduct cloud-seeding. This eff ort could not be carried out due to inadequate cloud formation. About 200 residents in Balakong protested. They called on the government to provide water. They were helpless, having to spend much money on buying plastic containers and travelling an hour every day to fetch water from a river. Everyone, from the young to the old, was frustrated, depressed and gloomy. A spokesman from the Selangor Water Department said that nothing much could be done. Their only hope was for rain to pour! As if the people of Selangor had not suff ered enough, the dry spell contributed to more cases of dengue fever. Praktis Bijak F1(C)3rd 18.11.20.indd 20 18/11/2020 6:30 PM GLOBAL MEDIASTREET SDN. Our First Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Tunku Abdul Rahman was born on 8 February, 1903, in Alor Setar, Kedah. Malaya was then under the British rule. Tunku was the twentieth child of Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah and Che Manjalara, the sultan’s fourth wife. Tunku received his early education at the Alor Setar Malay Primary School before furthering his studies at Sultan Abdul Hamid College. In 1913, he went to study at Debsurin School in Bangkok. In 1915 he continued his education at Penang Free School. In 1919, he was awarded a scholarship to study law at Cambridge University. He graduated in 1925. In 1931, Tunku worked as a cadet in the Kedah civil service. Tunku was called to the Bar in 1949 and soon became the deputy public prosecutor in Kedah. In 1951, he left the job to pursue his interest in politics. Tunku had great achievements. He became the president of UMNO and formed the Alliance Party (now known as Barisan Nasional). Under Tunku’s leadership, the Alliance Party won the 1955 election and Tunku became the fi rst chief minister of Malaya. Tunku’s dream was to see our country gain independence. In 1956, he led a mission to London for this cause. The British promised to give independence to our country by August 1957. Tunku was to become the fi rst prime minister. After much preparation, Malaya celebrated her independence. At midnight on 30 August 1957, Tunku stood near the fl agpole in Merdeka Square. It was then that the Union Jack was lowered for the last time. And our new fl ag was raised. Malaysia’s National Tree The Merbau tree is Malaysia’s national tree. It was selected as the National Tree in 2019 by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. It is a symbol of national pride due to its hardy nature. It is also a symbol of the importance of forests to the country’s industries and the economy. These trees grow in coastal regions and inland lowland forests, up to a height of 850 metres. The Merbau is an indigenous rainforest tree. It has a majestic and hardy appearance. The bark is pinkish-grey. The roots can grow up to four metres. Merbau leaves reach lengths of up to 25 cm. Its fl owering shoot is up to 10 cm long, with pale yellowish fl owers. The fruits are brown or black when ripe. The Merbau tree is suitable for planting in parks. The bark and leaves are used as medicine and also to make various brown and yellow dyes. The wood is the main source of the commercial timber known as Merbau. The young seeds are edible. Today, illegal logging has reduced the species. To prevent the Merbau tree from extinction, new ways of commercial planting needs to be researched and tested especially since this tree is now our national tree. The Rainforest World Music Festival The Rainforest World Music Festival (often abbreviated as RWMF) is a unique three-day global music festival that brings together renowned world musicians from all continents and indigenous musicians from the interiors of the mythical island of Borneo. In March 1998, the Tourism Board approved the funding for the festival with the Sarawak Tourism Board as the organiser of the festival. Every year, the Music Festival is set against the magnifi cent backdrop of the legendary Mount Santubong in Kuching, where the Sarawak Cultural Village lies. Established in 1998 with an audience of only 300 people, it is now a major event held every year in the state’s music calendar, eagerly anticipated by a crowd of over 20,000 people who include foreigners and local tourists. It is a family-friendly event with afternoon educational workshops and lectures, mini-concerts, cultural and craft displays, food stalls and main-stage evening concerts. Besides music, this festival has a record of environmental awareness because of its many tree-planting campaigns, its attention to recycling and the use of shuttle buses to reduce carbon emission. The festival was awarded Best International Music Festival for six years consecutively, from 2010 to 2015. Praktis Bijak F1(C)3rd 18.11.20.indd 28 18/11/2020 6:30 PM GLOBAL MEDIASTREET SDN. BHD.

We have been corresponding since 2018. How did I get to know her? Back then, my Dad took me to Bhutan to visit his friend, a Bhutanese. It was at Mr Dajor’s house that I was introduced to Dechen, a pretty girl with dark hair and dark eyes. When I fi rst met her, Dechen was speaking Dzongkha, a Sino-Tibetan language with her Dad. Initially, I thought they could not speak English but I was wrong! Both father and daughter speak fl uent English. They then apologised to us for using their language saying that they are very used to speaking it when at home. Dechen goes to the Pelkhil International School which is a private school. Dechen told me that they are taught discipline, morality and the value of happiness. They are also taught other subjects and foreign languages. Dechen speaks Mandarin and Cantonese too. I found out later that they have a Chinese maid. Bhutan’s main religion is Buddhism. Dechen likes to read religious books. She also chants Buddhist hymns during her free time. I tried telling her how tired I was. I tried all sorts but nothing worked. Suddenly, I had a bright idea. Fairy tales! Sue loves listening to fairy tales. “What if I told you a fairy tale?” I asked. “Super!” came her reply. “But there’s a condition.” “Condition? What is it?” Sue asked, surprised. I said, “Sleep after I fi nish telling you the fairy tale.” “No problem!” she assured me. I put on my thinking cap and made up my own tale. “Once upon a time, there lived a very poor girl. Her name was Anna and she was six years old.” Sue interrupted, “Oh, the girl is my age!” “Anna’s parents passed away when she was only four years old. Poor Anna had nobody in the world, so she made friends with the animals in the forest. All the animals loved her very much. The squirrels would bring her nuts. The lion would guard the entrance to the cave where she lived. The elephant was her bodyguard when she played in the forest. The birds sang to Anna when they knew that she was sad. Anna felt she was the happiest girl in the world. Then, one day…,” and I paused. “Quick! What happened?” “An ugly witch came to the forest. She saw Anna playing happily with the animals and was jealous. The witch had a plan. That night when all the animals were sleeping, she took Anna away to a high mountain. The next morning, all the animals cried when they couldn’t fi nd Anna. They heard the witch screaming. She wanted to kill Anna. As she was about to kill Anna, the sky opened up and a huge dragon appeared. The dragon carried Anna away and brought her back to her cave. The dragon then went back to the witch and with one kick of its powerful hind legs, the dragon killed the wicked witch.” Just then, I heard a little snore. I breathed a sigh of relief. An elephant has thick legs, large hanging ears, a small tail, little eyes, two long white tusks and a long nose called a trunk. The trunk is used for breathing, bringing food and water to the mouth, and holding objects. Their tusks serve both as a weapon and as a tool for moving objects and digging. African elephants are larger, have bigger ears and longer tusks compared to Asian elephants. The elephant is an intelligent animal and can live up to 70 years in the wild. Its intelligence combined with its great strength makes it a very useful servant to man. They are caught alive, trained and tamed and used as working animals. They can carry heavy loads and even go tiger hunting. In the past, they were used in war but today, they are often put on display in zoos or exploited for entertainment in shows. Elephants have been featured in art, folklore, religion, literature and popular culture. One of the biggest threats to the elephant population is poaching as elephants are killed for their ivory tusks. Besides that, their habitats are also shrinking. Both the African and Asian elephants’ habitats have declined by over 50 percent and the elephant species has been classifi ed as endangered. Delaying doing something until later because you just don’t feel like it right now… I’ll study after this video. I’ll do my homework after dinner. Well, here’s a short list of things to do that can help with that. Take the fi rst step. Getting started is always the hardest part of doing anything. It is easier to keep going once you have built up momentum than it is to start fresh. Break the task down into manageable parts. It’s harder to stay motivated when you have six chapters to revise, but easier to revise half a chapter. Set a deadline for yourself, and reward yourself when you reach it (but not immediately because that would break your fl ow). Save the reward for later. This helps you become more disciplined. Eliminate causes of distraction. If you know that your phone is regularly distracting, put it under your pillow and put the pillow under the bed. If you can’t stop watching TV, change rooms. Human beings are naturally lazy animals and it is often easier to trick our brain into doing what we’re already doing than to get up and do something else. Finally, get proper sleep. It is understandably more diffi cult to do this when school starts so early in the morning but a huge part of what is seen as ‘laziness’ is actually just tiredness from lack of sleep. Most of us love eating shrimps, especially the head. Do you know that the heart of a shrimp is located in its head? (1) I am very sure you have seen a garden snail before. Did you know that a snail can sleep for three years? Slugs have four noses and a rhinoceros’ horn is made of hair. Almost all animals can jump. (2) The fi ngerprints of a koala are almost similar to those of a human. Do you know of animals that sleep while standing up? Well, cows and horses are two animals that do. (3) Most of us love the white, fl uff y fur of the polar bear but do you know that their skin is actually black? We learn that lions hunt for their young but interestingly, female lions are better hunters than the males. (4) Now, some interesting science facts about fl owers! The largest individual fl ower on Earth is the Raffl esia arnoldii. (5) That’s huge indeed! Most of us love fl owers for their sweet smell but not all fl owers smell good. The smelliest fl ower is the titan arum that smells like a rotting dead body. Do you know the mimosa pudica? (6) The leaves fold up when they are touched. It has whitish pink fl owers that look like pom poms. The Bird of Paradise is a beautiful, oddly shaped plant which look like the colorful tropical bird that it’s named after. Justin woke up and carried out his normal routine – took a short, cold shower, heated up leftover food and sat down for breakfast. (1) He went out looking for her every time he had a day off . His ailing mother had left home fi ve years ago. “Justin, forget about your mum. I suppose she’s already gone!” his neighbours advised him. (2) She had probably left the house because she didn’t want to burden him. Justin had to do odd jobs in order to help support his ailing mother. (3) He believed that it was his duty to look after her. Plus, he really loved her. The streets were crowded with people celebrating the new year. He saw families spending time together, laughing and smiling. Tears rolled down his cheeks. (4) “Please come home. I need you!” Justin stood by the side of the road. He dug into his pocket. (5) He showed it to the people on the streets. They shook their heads and walked away. Despite this, Justin never gave up. He continued to show the photo to whoever he met. “Honey, look at this photo! Isn’t she in our nursing home?” the man asked the lady beside him. “Yes, she is,” cried the lady. She turned to Justin. Justin told them about his missing mother. They took Justin to their nursing home. (6) When Justin called her, she couldn’t recognise him. It didn’t matter to Justin. For him, it was the best New Year’s Day ever! A Justin’s mum was eating at the table with a few other residents. B He took out his mother’s photo. C Justin did not believe that she left because she didn’t care about him. D He rushed to make a report that he had found his mother. E After breakfast, he went in search of his missing mother. F He never complained about how tired he was. G “Mum, where are you?” he asked. H The people on the street helped him search for his mum. Six sentences have been removed from the recount. Choose from the sentences (A – H) to fi t each gap (1 – 6). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use. Negative Eff ects of Excess Sugar Consumption Sugar is found in a variety of foods and drinks. However, consuming too much sugar is not healthy. Sugary drinks, candy, baked foods and sweetened dairy products are the main sources of added sugar. Even savoury foods like breads, tomato sauce and protein bars have sugar. (1) . (2) . This explains why people are more likely to crave for a sweet than whole foods like fruits and veggies. (3) . So the brain starts to crave for more sugar to get that same feeling. (4) . Bacteria that cause cavities love to eat sugar lingering in your mouth. When you eat excess sugar, your arteries will be aff ected. It causes the artery walls to grow faster than normal and get tense. (5) . Excess sugar consumption can also aff ect one’s liver and blood pressure levels. Most people who are obese are said to consume excess sugary food. (6) . Insulin produced by the pancreas lowers blood glucose. The absence or insuffi cient production of insulin, or an inability of the body to properly use insulin causes diabetes. A These whole foods do not cause the brain to release much dopamine. B Eating too much sugar can also aff ect your teeth. C No matter what it’s called, sugar is still sugar. D Diabetes is a chronic condition associated with abnormally high levels of sugar. E People love sugar but do not realise how dangerous excessive sugar consumption can be. F This stresses the heart, resulting in heart diseases, heart attacks and strokes. G A person’s overall health will be aff ected. H Consuming sugar gives your brain a huge surge of a feel-good chemical called dopamine. I think it’s best you read to children. There’s a children’s home in your housing estate and there are many young kids there. It would be helpful if you could spend some time there reading to them. I know that you are a very good storyteller. So you should make use of this talent to read to them. It will brighten their day. Moreover, since the home is within a stone’s throw from your house, you can go there on your own. It will also be nice for you to make new friends too. Let me know what you decide. The modern world is scientifi c and mechanical and I think it would be good to equip ourselves with some of that skill. Through the Robotics Club, we can learn how to invent simple robots. Who knows? In future we may make a living inventing robots! The Robotics Club meets every Thursday at 3.00 p.m. in the Computer Lab. I think we’re both free on Thursdays so the time works for us. Let me know what you decide so we can sign up. Your friend, Kim Practice 3 Hi Sean, You should defi nitely participate in the programme. I am sure you will enjoy it. It has been open to the public for more than a month. The park is called Taman Setia and is very near my house. The park has many facilities. There is a football field, a lake and a jogging track which goes around the lake. Nearby, there is a mini fishing pond for fishing enthusiasts. I am at the park every evening, if there’s no rain. You will love the place! Hope to see you soon. Regards, Alesha Practice 6 My name is Sulok Tawie and I am thirteen years old. I am an Iban from Kuching, Sarawak. I am studying in SMK Batu Lima. I am in Form One. I live with my parents, who are both doctors. I have three brothers. We are a very close knit family. My best friends are Jonathan Shin and Lim Peng, who are my classmates. We have similar interests and hobbies. My hobbies are reading, singing and listening to music. I also enjoy playing the violin. I am not very keen on outdoor activities. My ambition is to be a doctor like my parents. I want to help people and find a cure for cancer and other terminal illnesses. Practice 7 Sample answer My parents are superb line dancers and I love watching them line dance with their friends. One day I told my mum that I wanted to join them and that was how it all started three years ago. We have our practice every Saturday evening at the community hall. I really enjoy this simple yet interesting hobby. It’s a good form of exercise too. Since my mum is the coach, I do not need to pay for my lessons. Through this hobby I have been able to spend quality time with my parents. Doing line dancing has helped me learn about discipline and never giving up. In the beginning I made a lot of mistakes but I persevered and recently took part in a line dancing competition with my parents’ group. It was such a great experience. I would like to learn more moves and become better. Who knows? Maybe I will be a coach one day too. This cave has man-made walkways and lights for visitors to explore it easily. It is actually a river cave with a long river of about 1.6 km running through it. It has three very large chambers and a breathtaking gallery of stalagmites, stalactites and other amazing rock formations. There are various tours of diff erent lengths and diffi culty into the caves. The Perak government has plans to make it a world class tourist attraction. Practice 10 Dear Ishimoto, How are you and your family? I read your letter and was surprised that your favourite subject is Mathematics. That is one subject I do not like. My favourite subejct is English. At home we only speak in English and I consider it as my main language. English is taught as a second language in schools. I fi nd that English is not a diffi cult subject like mathematics and science. I love learning new words and using them especially when writing an essay or for a presentation. When I use the internet, I need English as most of the websites are in English. I also use English to communicate with people when we travel to other countries. Generally, I fi nd that communication is not a problem if you know English. Finally, you know my hobby is reading and I enjoy reading storybooks in English. I am able to broaden my vocabulary and language skills by reading English storybooks. That is one of the main reasons why English is my favourite subject! Please write soon. I’ve asked my father to coach us since he was a former chess competitor. We can get the other members of our team to come to my house too so that everyone can hopefully learn something. My mum says she can cook lunch for all of us. When we’re done, we could play futsal at the park nearby or just play some computer games. What do you think? Do let me know so that I can inform the others. Johnson Part 2 Sample answer Deepaval, or Diwali as it is sometimes called, is the festival I celebrate. It is also known as the Festival of Lights and Hindus all over the world celebrate this day which usually falls in October or November. It is an autumn festival that marks the last harvest for the year. Deepavali is celebrated to ward off darkness and to welcome light and is a celebration of good over evil, and light over darkness. So, oil lamps are lit to thank the gods for the peace and happiness that they have enjoyed and will enjoy. Deepavali is celebrated for four days. On the first day of Deepavali, people clean their homes. They usually buy something made of metal, such as gold or silver jewellery or kitchen utensils. On the second day the house is decorated with oil lamps and a ‘rangoli’ is created on the floor using coloured powder, sand and rice. The third day is the main day, when everyone has an oil bath and dress up in new clothes. They then have prayers followed by a feast of delicious foods cooked by the women of the house. Later friends and relatives visit, bringing gifts and sweets. The final day of course is dedicated to Lord Krishna and prayers are held.
