Singular This – for a person or thing very near us That – for a person or thing farther away from us Plural These – for people or things very near us Those – for people or things farther away from us This is a dustbin. This refers to ONE dustbin that is very near. Those are butterflies. Those refers to more than one butterfly that is farther away. Remember • This and that refer to a singular noun. This is a pearl necklace. That is a harp. • These and those refer to a plural noun. These are pails. Those are my boots. • Do not confuse a demonstrative pronoun with a demonstrative adjective.
