© Global Mediastreet Sdn. Bhd. (762284-U) 9 In this section of the paper, you will be asked to correct errors in the given passage. Each passage contains eight grammar or word usage errors. The passage will not contain spelling or punctuation errors. Remember to always read the instructions carefully. The correct word must not change the meaning of the passage. COMMON ERRORS Let’s take a look at some of the common errors found in this question. Tenses Tenses are used to refer to a moment in time. The tense of a sentence allows us to see whether the writer is referring to a moment in the past, in the future, or currently occurring in the present. Example: The movie will be at 8.00 p.m. The tense ‘will be’ shows that the movie has not happened yet. Compare that sentence to ‘The movie was at 8.00 p.m.’ Can you tell what the diff erence is? Tenses can also be divided into simple, perfect and continuous. Simple tense means that the action is over. For example: I walked home. The simple tense can refer to the present or the past. Continuous tense means that at the time referenced by the sentence, the action was ongoing. Example: As I was walking home, it started to rain. This is an example of the past continuous tense, because the action took place before the present moment. Perfect tense means that the action had been ongoing, but stopped. Perfect tense always involves the use of the words has, have, or had. Example: I had been walking happily, but then it started to rain. Here is an overview of the basic tenses: Past Tense Simple Past: They talked. Past Perfect: They had talked. Past Continuous: They were talking. Present Tense Simple Present: They walk. Present Perfect: They have walked. Present Continuous: They are walking. Future Tense Simple Future: They will talk. Future Perfect: They will have talked. Future Continuous: They will be talking. To fi nd out the tense of the passage you are reading, refer to the rest of the text. Look for the tense of the rest of the sentence, as well as clues to time such as words like ‘tomorrow’ or ‘just now.’ PART Error Identifi cation B
© Global Mediastreet Sdn. Bhd. (762284-U) 10 Singular/Plural Another very common error tested in this section is the use of singular or plural forms. This requires you to know the singular and plural forms of a word. For example, the words ‘is’ and ‘are’ and the past tense versions ‘was’ and ‘were’. Take care that you understand which is which – ‘is’ and ‘was’ are both singular, while ‘are’ and ‘were’ are plural. Another common confusion as to whether to include an ‘s’ at the end of a sentence is when referring to a singular person. For example, ‘She eats her lunch.’ is correct, because verb forms in English have an ‘s’ when referring to a singular pronoun (eat – eats). The exception is the word ‘You’. This is because the word ‘You’ was once plural (the singular version being ‘Thou’) but since ‘Thou’ has been replaced by ‘You’ in everyday usage, this is now a common source of confusion. Therefore, the sentence ‘You eat your lunch.’ is grammatically correct, because the word ‘You’ is treated as plural in the English language. Apostrophe Words In the English language, there are only two uses for the apostrophe (‘) 1) To indicate an omission, usually missing letters Example: ‘It is’ can be shortened by omission to ‘It’s’ 2) To indicate possession Example: That is Azlan’s cat. Let’s look at case (1). There are many examples of omission in English, such as aren’t, isn’t, you’re and o’clock (which is an omission of ‘on the clock.’). In areas of confusion such as ‘its’ vs ‘it’s’, ‘your’ vs ‘you’re’ and ‘their’ vs ‘they’re’, remember that the original word has the long form. ‘They’re’ is short for ‘They are’. Example: The boys asked me to look after they’re bags for them. Does the sentence make sense? In this example, the sentence no longer makes sense when you substitute the original word. ‘The boys asked me to look after they are bags for them.’ Another common error is the word ‘its’, which is the possessive form of ‘it’. Example: ‘The window is missing its glass.’ is grammatically correct; it would not make sense if the sentence were ‘The window is missing it is glass.’ With case (2) possession, the apostrophe is put at the end of the word to indicate that the next word belongs to it. Examples: the window’s glass the girl’s exam results Confusion with ‘it’s’ and ‘its’ still applies here, because remember, ‘its’ is the possessive form of ‘it’, and ‘it’s’ is short for ‘it is’.

© Global Mediastreet Sdn. Bhd. (762284-U) 19 In this reading section, you will have to answer questions in three parts. These include information transfer, meaning of words and completing a passage with a choice of sentences provided. All these questions will test your comprehension of the passage in order to be able to pick out the required answer for each question. You must take note that for Part 3 and Part 4, there is a limit to the number of words in your answer, three words for Part 3 and fi ve words for Part 4. Here are a few simple steps you can take to make comprehension easier on yourself: READ THE QUESTIONS FIRST If you read the questions before reading the passage, you will be able to know what the questions are asking of you. Then when you read the passage, you will be able to look out for the key points. READ THE TEXT SLOWLY Rushing through a comprehension passage may cause you to miss out on essential information or supporting context. If there are parts you do not understand, read them again. Try to break it up into smaller parts if it will help you understand better. UNDERLINE/HIGHLIGHT THE KEY POINTS OF THE TEXT This serves two purposes – it makes you pay attention to the key ideas, and it also lets you check your answers faster. LOOK AROUND THE KEY POINTS Sometimes, supporting information is located in more than one place. Read before and after the key points in order to look for supporting evidence and context that can help you ensure that your answer is correct. In some cases, you may have to infer the answer. This means that the answer is not directly stated in the passage but comes from understanding the message conveyed. DOUBLE CHECK YOUR ANSWERS Read the questions again carefully. Sometimes you may have assumed the question wanted something that it did not. Does your answer fi t into what the question is looking for? Is your answer supported by information in the text? He named the restaurant after his daughter, Noor Kumari Isa. In a newspaper interview, Noor Kumari recounted how her father decided to open a restaurant with her as one of the partners. At that time, Noor was working as a company secretary while Captain Mohammad had just retired from the army. Armed with the techniques of cooking traditional Malay cuisine, he had decided to venture into the food business. Noor’s Restaurant became well-known for its grilled chicken in spicy percik sauce. Many people visit the restaurant just for this dish. “The ‘ayam percik’ here is so diff erent from those sold elsewhere. The grilled chicken is tender and sweet.” When asked by customers as to the recipe of the grilled chicken, Noor said, “That’s my grandmother’s secret recipe.” Customers also go for Noor’s other dishes like mamak-style fried noodles and nasi biryani. As for desserts, the mere mention of Noor’s durian cendol makes the mouth water. There’s also ‘bubur cha-cha’. Traditional cakes are also sold in the morning. Noor’s Restaurant boasts of its layered cake using traditional Kelantanese spices. Customers place orders for this special cake especially during Hari Raya and other celebrations. The most popular sweet delight is the ‘kuih pelita’ made from fl our with coconut milk. The biggest challenge this father and daughter partnership has faced so far is the availability of workers. “Workers come and go as they like,” said Captain Mohammad. “Hence, we decided to bring in our own family members.” “We hope to have a Noor’s Restaurant in Kuala Lumpur soon,” said Noor.

As this was our fi rst visit we wanted to experience living in a longhouse because we had heard so much about them. These longhouses are located in the interior of Sarawak. To get to these longhouses one can either travel for a day on the road or use a boat. The longhouses are built on stilts and normally have 30 to 50 rooms, one for each family. As the longhouse we stayed in was built high above the ground we had to climb up a specifi c tree trunk to get to the longhouse. These longhouses were once home to the many local ethnic groups, especially the Iban and Bidayuh. My uncle, who belongs to the Bidayuh ethnic group, took us to his longhouse located in the Penrissen area. We travelled by road to get there. According to my uncle the most popular and frequently visited longhouses by tourists are the Kampong Benuk and Annah Rais longhouses. The journey from Kuching to my uncle’s longhouse took about an hour and a half. When we reached his longhouse we were greeted with traditional dances and music and served tuak, a special rice wine. We stayed in the longhouse for three days and had the time of our life.

Anyway, I am writing to tell you about my recent visit to the PC Fair that was held at the Seremban Convention Centre. It was originally supposed to run for only two days, the 15th and 16th of March, but due to the large number of visitors the organisers decided to extend it for another day. Computer Allies, the organisers of the PC Fair invited other computer dealers to showcase their products so people could buy computers and computer accessories that they liked from these dealers. We were spoilt for choice! There were many activities as well such as a computer exhibition, quizzes and even a Young Scientist Competition. I was really amazed to learn how much our young children know about computers. There was one section where children could spend time watching movies. The PC Fair was open for 12 hours, from 9.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m. for the three days. It was really crowded but people were very happy that they had made it to the Fair. Many said it was worth it and that they are looking forward to such PC Fairs in future. For your information, Justin, since you are interested in buying a new desktop for your father, there will be another PC Fair in November at the same place. I hope you will be able to visit that one. Regards, Julian

Most of us are not aware that parts of our body can tell a lot about our personality. Looks can reveal quite a lot about a person. Let’s start with the nose. People with long noses are ambitious and hardworking. (1) . Sensitive and loyal people have short noses. They value their family more than anything else. What about people with long faces? (2) . Someone with a narrow face is emotional while those with wide faces don’t have much emotions but are very successful. The eyes tell a lot about people’s personality too. People with wide eyes are more expressive and emotional. (3) . People with big eyes are open-minded, intelligent and friendly. What about those with deep-set eyes? They are mysterious and observant. Our lips can also reveal quite a lot about our personality. People with medium-sized lips are independent. Those with thicker lips put everyone’s needs before their own. Generous people have wide lips. (4) . People with thin lips are known to be more competitive and loners. (5) . Do you know which is your index fi nger and ring fi nger? The index fi nger is between the thumb and the middle fi nger. Your ring fi nger is next to the middle fi nger. (6) . It was a thrill for the students to see their teachers running the 6 x 50 metres relay. To conclude a great and successful day, the District Education Offi cer gave away the prizes. Nine records were broken. (6) . After the prize-giving ceremony, the principal announced that Monday would be a holiday. Everyone cheered with joy.
