© Global Mediastreet Sdn. Bhd. (762284-U) 10 Singular/Plural Another very common error tested in this section is the use of singular or plural forms. This requires you to know the singular and plural forms of a word. For example, the words ‘is’ and ‘are’ and the past tense versions ‘was’ and ‘were’. Take care that you understand which is which – ‘is’ and ‘was’ are both singular, while ‘are’ and ‘were’ are plural. Another common confusion as to whether to include an ‘s’ at the end of a sentence is when referring to a singular person. For example, ‘She eats her lunch.’ is correct, because verb forms in English have an ‘s’ when referring to a singular pronoun (eat – eats). The exception is the word ‘You’. This is because the word ‘You’ was once plural (the singular version being ‘Thou’) but since ‘Thou’ has been replaced by ‘You’ in everyday usage, this is now a common source of confusion. Therefore, the sentence ‘You eat your lunch.’ is grammatically correct, because the word ‘You’ is treated as plural in the English language. Apostrophe Words In the English language, there are only two uses for the apostrophe (‘) 1) To indicate an omission, usually missing letters Example: ‘It is’ can be shortened by omission to ‘It’s’ 2) To indicate possession Example: That is Azlan’s cat. Let’s look at case (1). There are many examples of omission in English, such as aren’t, isn’t, you’re and o’clock (which is an omission of ‘on the clock.’). In areas of confusion such as ‘its’ vs ‘it’s’, ‘your’ vs ‘you’re’ and ‘their’ vs ‘they’re’, remember that the original word has the long form. ‘They’re’ is short for ‘They are’. Example: The boys asked me to look after they’re bags for them. Does the sentence make sense? In this example, the sentence no longer makes sense when you substitute the original word. ‘The boys asked me to look after they are bags for them.’ Another common error is the word ‘its’, which is the possessive form of ‘it’. Example: ‘The window is missing its glass.’ is grammatically correct; it would not make sense if the sentence were ‘The window is missing it is glass.’ With case (2) possession, the apostrophe is put at the end of the word to indicate that the next word belongs to it. Examples: the window’s glass the girl’s exam results Confusion with ‘it’s’ and ‘its’ still applies here, because remember, ‘its’ is the possessive form of ‘it’, and ‘it’s’ is short for ‘it is’.

© Global Mediastreet Sdn. Bhd. (762284-U) 19 In this reading section, you will have to answer questions in three parts. These include information transfer, meaning of words and completing a passage with a choice of sentences provided. All these questions will test your comprehension of the passage in order to be able to pick out the required answer for each question. You must take note that for Part 3 and Part 4, there is a limit to the number of words in your answer, three words for Part 3 and fi ve words for Part 4. Here are a few simple steps you can take to make comprehension easier on yourself: READ THE QUESTIONS FIRST If you read the questions before reading the passage, you will be able to know what the questions are asking of you. Then when you read the passage, you will be able to look out for the key points. READ THE TEXT SLOWLY Rushing through a comprehension passage may cause you to miss out on essential information or supporting context. If there are parts you do not understand, read them again. Try to break it up into smaller parts if it will help you understand better. UNDERLINE/HIGHLIGHT THE KEY POINTS OF THE TEXT This serves two purposes – it makes you pay attention to the key ideas, and it also lets you check your answers faster. LOOK AROUND THE KEY POINTS Sometimes, supporting information is located in more than one place. Read before and after the key points in order to look for supporting evidence and context that can help you ensure that your answer is correct. In some cases, you may have to infer the answer. This means that the answer is not directly stated in the passage but comes from understanding the message conveyed. DOUBLE CHECK YOUR ANSWERS Read the questions again carefully. Sometimes you may have assumed the question wanted something that it did not. Does your answer fi t into what the question is looking for? Is your answer supported by information in the text? PART C Comprehension

She’s not just fat, she’s obese.” These were the comments I used to hear from my classmates and even relatives. I had always been a couch potato. My hobbies were eating good food, relaxing on the sofa and sleeping like a log! One day, my parents told me, “Pam, you are only twelve and you are obese.” My mum was very worried. My dad gave me some articles to read on obesity. I read the articles and reaslied that obesity was a serious health problem that would cause other health problems! I began to feel scared of falling sick. I decided I needed to have regular exercise and a healthy diet. I started swimming again. My parents were very supportive. They took me to the public swimming pool at weekends. When they were free on weekdays, they would go biking and jogging with me in the park. Mum took the trouble to prepare special healthy meals for me. No more chips, hamburgers or fried chicken wings! Instead, I had to get used to boiled and steamed food. Fruits and vegetables were on the menu every day. She even prepared healthy snacks such as fruit yogurt and whole-grain cookies, less sweet of course. At times, I felt like giving up but my parents continued to encourage me. They exercised with me and ate the same kind of food as me. I began to get used to the food and exercise. Soon, I noticed my clothes getting looser. My hard work was paying off . Today, I am slim and healthy. How did I do it? I have my parents to thank. Now I plan to give testimonies about my journey to inspire other children like me.

Edward Jenner Edward Jenner was an English physician and scientist who was the pioneer of vaccine, the world’s fi rst vaccine. Edward Jenner was born on May 17, 1749 in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, England as the eighth of nine children. His father, the Reverend Stephen Jenner, was the vicar of Berkeley, so Jenner received a strong basic education. At the age of fi ve he was orphaned but his brothers and sisters supported him so that he could become a doctor. He studied surgery at St George’s Hospital in London. At the age of 23, he became a successful family doctor and surgeon and returned to his native countryside, Berkeley, to serve. At that time smallpox was a common disease and major cause of death. Jenner heard that milkmaids who caught cowpox never seemed to catch smallpox. In 1788, during a smallpox epidemic, many of those who had contracted cowpox did not contract smallpox. Jenner followed up his observation that milkmaids who had previously caught cowpox did not later catch smallpox by showing that inoculated cowpox protected against smallpox. Consequently Jenner introduced the smallpox vaccine to the world in 1796. Jenner is often called ‘the father of immunology’, and his work is said to have ‘saved more lives than the work of any other human’. Today, smallpox is non-existent and the smallpox viruses that exist are only those in laboratories.
© Global Mediastreet Sdn. Bhd. (762284-U) 34 PRACTICE 8 Read the text and answer questions 1 to 10. Kindness and empathy help us to relate to other people and have more positive and meaningful relationships with friends, family, and even perfect strangers we may encounter. Besides improving personal relationships, being kind benefi ts one’s mental, emotional and physical health. Kindness contributes to the maintenance of good health and changes brain chemistry. It releases the hormone oxytocin which protects the heart (by lowering blood pressure) and reduces infl ammation. When one is kind, endorphins, the body’s natural painkiller, and feel-good hormones such as serotonin, the neurotransmitter responsible for feelings of satisfaction and well-being, are also released. Anxiety is an extremely common human experience. While there are several ways to reduce anxiety such as meditation, exercise, medication and natural remedies, it turns out that being kind to others can be one of the easiest, most inexpensive way to keep anxiety at bay. Showing kindness, helping and building relationships with others lets you get outside of yourself and take a break from the stress factors in your own life. It is an eff ective strategy for reducing the impact of stress on your emotional well-being. So how can we show and share kindness? Smile and give meaningful compliments to others as often as possible. Be kind to yourself fi rst, because it would be hard to help others unless you are kind to yourself. Look for opportunities to be kind, however small it may seem. At the end of the day you will realise that kindness really matters and can bring about positive changes in one’s life.

The second is guided writing based on notes given. You may choose whether or not to use the notes provided. Here are a few tips you can use to improve your writing and make it clear and engaging. PLAN Planning is an important step in writing. Planning helps you be more organised in what you want to write in order that you fulfi l the task at hand. Instead of trying to plan your writing and write the text at the same time, planning allows you to focus on each one more eff ectively. Remember, the point of a plan is for you to have something to refer to as you write. Taking the time to make a plan means that you are creating your own guide. BE SPECIFIC Being specifi c helps in your writing because it anchors the piece and allows the writing to feel more ‘real’. By adding specifi c details, you allow the reader to understand your idea more clearly. Specifi c details also help you focus and give you ideas on how to proceed with the writing. CHECK YOUR WORK Go over your writing and check for grammar or spelling errors, missed punctuation, misused words, unclear handwriting and so on. You should use this opportunity to check the fl ow of your text, to see whether the ideas make sense, or if you have missed anything from your plan or the task required. PART D Writing
