14 © Global Mediastreet Sdn. Bhd. (762284-U) Part C READING PRACTICE 1 Read the text below and answer questions 1 to 8. Tangram The Tangram is believed to have originated from China approximately 200 years ago and was then carried over to America by Captain M. Donaldson in 1815. It resembles the western jigsaw puzzle but it diff ers from the jigsaw in always having the same number of fl at pieces, seven in all, which are fi tted together in diff erent ways to construct diff erent fi gures. These seven fl at shapes are called tans and they are formed from a square. Arranged correctly, these Tangram shapes can be fi tted together as a simple square, rectangle or triangle and as complex fi gures such as a trapezium or parallelogram. They can also be fi tted to represent human and animal fi gures. In China, Tangram patterns are called ‘qiqiaoban’ meaning intriguing seven-piece puzzle. Playing with Tangrams has educational benefi ts, and many educators recommend their use in the classroom. Tangram, like building blocks, can teach kids about visualspatial relationships. They may help kids learn geometric terms and develop stronger problem-solving abilities.

16 © Global Mediastreet Sdn. Bhd. (762284-U) PRACTICE 2 Read the text below and answer questions 1 to 8. The Bermuda Triangle The Bermuda Triangle has long captured the human imagination with unexplained disappearances of ships, planes and people. The term ‘Bermuda Triangle’ was fi rst used in an article written by Vincent H. Gaddis for Argosy magazine in 1964. The Bermuda Triangle is located on the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean. This triangle was named “the Devil’s Triangle” by Christopher Columbus who noticed strange lights in the sky during his voyage in 1492. Today, this name is most apt due to the many unexplained ship disappearances. About 50 ships and 20 airplanes are said to have disappeared under mysterious circumstances and compasses used here often spin and point in the wrong direction. The USS Cyclops, which disappeared in 1918, and the Mary Celeste, found abandoned with no one it in 1872, are two very good examples of the strange events that have occurred around the Bermuda Triangle. In 1945, Flight 19, a formation of fi ve bomber planes from Florida, mysteriously disappeared from the sky. The pilots were experienced and it seemed strange that they got lost. No one has been able to fi nd an explanation for this mysterious disappearance.

22 © Global Mediastreet Sdn. Bhd. (762284-U) PRACTICE 5 Read the text and answer questions 1 to 10. Kindness Kindness and empathy help us to relate to other people and have more positive and meaningful relationships with friends, family, and even perfect strangers we may encounter. Besides improving personal relationships, being kind benefi ts one’s mental, emotional and physical health. Kindness contributes to the maintenance of good health and changes brain chemistry. It releases the hormone oxytocin which protects the heart (by lowering blood pressure) and reduces infl ammation. When one is kind, endorphins, the body’s natural painkiller, and feel-good hormones such as serotonin, the neurotransmitter responsible for feelings of satisfaction and well-being, are also released. Anxiety is an extremely common human experience. While there are several ways to reduce anxiety such as meditation, exercise, medication and natural remedies, it turns out that being kind to others can be one of the easiest, most inexpensive way to keep anxiety at bay. Showing kindness, helping and building relationships with others lets you get outside of yourself and take a break from the stress factors in your own life. It is an eff ective strategy for reducing the impact of stress on your emotional well-being. So how can we show and share kindness? Smile and give meaningful compliments to others as often as possible. Be kind to yourself fi rst, because it would be hard to help others unless you are kind to yourself. Look for opportunities to be kind, however small it may seem. At the end of the day you will realise that kindness really matters and can bring about positive changes in one’s life.
