Climbing Mount Kinabalu I developed an interest in mountain climbing after my first climb up Mount Kinabalu. I was twenty years old then. Ten years on, I have climbed many other mountains around the world. On 23 March, my three uncles and I set out to climb Mount Kinabalu, the highest peak in South East Asia. Prior to the climb, we trained vigorously for six months and they taught me a lot about mountain climbing. We started our climb early in the morning from Kinabalu Park. The first part of our journey was not very difficult and we thought this would be an easy climb. After three hours, the uphill climb became more challenging and we started feeling the strain. We had to walk along narrow slippery paths in the rough and tough mountain terrain. It was difficult but we carried on. We rested whenever we came to the resting stations found every two to three kilometers. We continued our climb uphill for eight hours and then we reached Laban Rata Rest House, which was the only accommodation available. We had a simple dinner and went to bed, as we had to get up very early the next morning to continue our final and most challenging climb. We started our climb at 2 a.m. the next day, after a short briefing by our guides. We had to climb steep granite slopes using ropes. After several hours of climbing, we finally reached the summit. We were overwhelmed with joy and a sense of pride. The scenery from the summit was fantastic. After a short while, we started our journey downhill to Laban Rata. At about 11.00 a.m, we left Laban Rata and walked downhill towards Kinabalu Park. We reached Kinabalu Park at 3 p.m. The writer developed an interest in mountain climbing after 17 The training to climb Mount Kinabalu lasted 18 The writer first climbed Mount Kinabalu on 19 The starting point of the climb was at (20) Reached Laban Rata Rest House after (21) Reached summit after several hours. The final was held in Qatar and was between Argentina and France. Although I was unhappy that England did not make it to the final, I really enjoyed watching Argentina lift the World Cup trophy. The atmosphere in the stadium was electric, with fans of both teams singing songs and chanting. The entire match had everyone sitting on the edge of their seats while watching the game from start to finish. The two powerhouses of football, Messi of Argentina and Mbappe of France, were sensational. It looked as though Argentina was going to win the match at the end of full time but Mbappe scored two goals in quick succession which took the game into extra time. As no goal was scored during extra time, the match was then taken to a nail-biting penalty shootout. I found myself holding my breath as each player came up to take their penalty shot. It was nerve-wracking and I can only imagine how the players must have felt. Argentina then went on to win on penalties. It was very well deserved for Messi and his team. France were understandably devastated with their loss especially as they were the reigning world champions. I was extremely happy for Argentina and Messi as he is one of the best players in the world and he truly deserved to lift the World Cup trophy for the first time. Mid-Autumn Festival The Mid-Autumn Festival, or the Moon Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival celebrated on the eighth month in the Chinese calendar. The date of this festival in the Gregorian calendar changes every year, but is usually in September or October. It is the second most important festival only after Lunar New Year. The Mid-Autumn Festival has a history of 3,000 years and is based on the legend of Chang’e, the moon goddess in Chinese mythology. All the celebrations and activities are related to the moon, such as praying to the moon for good luck and worshipping the moon. The custom of worshipping the moon in autumn is basically to thank the moon for the rice harvest. It is celebrated differently in different regions of the world but it is basically a celebration of the rice harvest. Ceremonies are held both to give thanks for the harvest and to encourage a better harvest for the following year. Today, people celebrating this festival consider it as a time for family reunions. It is said on this day the moon is the brightest and completely round. Mooncakes and lanterns are a significant part of this festival. Mooncakes are the most popular and important food eaten during this festival. Its round shape, like the full moon, symbolises completeness and unity of families. On the night of the festival, all families share mooncakes while admiring the moon. Lanterns of all shapes and sizes are carried and displayed. . Meaning Word 33 a sign about the future 34 hundreds of years Superstitions A superstition is a belief that is not based on human reasoning or scientific knowledge but rather on the fear of the unknown. Superstitions are found everywhere in the world. Different cultures have different superstitious beliefs. For example, the numbers 4 and 13 are considered to be unlucky numbers in most parts of the world. In Asia, superstitions abound even to this day and age. For example, the Japanese believe that one should not whistle at night because you could attract snakes and supernatural spirits. In fact, whistling was how criminals used to communicate. In Korea, crows are considered to be bad luck. Shaking your legs is considered a bad omen and can result in bad luck and loss of wealth. Breaking a mirror is believed to bring seven years of bad luck. For centuries, the Indians believed that if you come home at night you have to wash your feet, especially the heels because during the night, spirits will follow you into the house and you will have nightmares. Although most of these are myths, there are still a lot of people who believe in them. One reason is that they take superstitions as a sign of respect for their culture and their ancestors who passed on the knowledge. UASA Form 2 Set 3(4th)8/4/23.indd 7 08/04/2023 7:06 PM
