Camping Trip Camping has always been one of my favourite pastimes. My father used to take the family camping when we were young. Recently, during the December holidays, my cousins and I decided to go on a three-day camping trip to Kubah National Park in Kuching without any adults. We chose this site because it is easily accessible. Our parents also felt that this place was safe and near to home. Since the campsite can only accommodate 10 people at a time we made the booking early in November. The camp was from 3 December to 5 December. All six of us were taken to the location in a specially chartered van. It was an hour-long drive from the bus terminal in Kuching. When we arrived at the park we noticed a waterfall and a stream near the camping site. We were told that the park has six jungle trails and one of the trails leads to Gunung Serapi, which hikers can climb in a day with the help of local guides. We decided to do this on 4 December. We only managed to go to two of the six trails as each trail would take about two hours for a return trip. Besides going on trail walks, we also went jungle-trekking and visited the Matang Wildlife Centre. The trip was a whole new experience for us and we even managed to pick up some jungle survival skills. Her father, Joseph, worked in a textile factory while her mother worked as a seamstress. They struggled to make ends meet but made sure that their children had everything they needed. Mariana's school was about four kilometres away and it took her almost an hour to walk there. Most of her friends either rode their bicycles or their parents drove them to school. Mariana did not mind walking to school because she knew her family was poor. On Mariana’s eleventh birthday, her parents planned to give her a big surprise. They would get her a bicycle so it would be easier for her to go to school. On the eve of her birthday, Mariana’s father went to the bicycle shop after work and found one that was just right for her. He was, however, dejected when he saw the price was RM350. He only had RM200 with him, so he went home empty-handed. Later that afternoon, Mariana’s mother came home and said her customer had given her a thankyou card in a sealed envelope for the good sewing job she had done. She opened the envelope with her husband next to her. When she opened the card, three RM50 notes dropped out. Mariana’s father could not believe his eyes. He told his wife about the bicycle he had seen earlier and without hesitation, she agreed they should buy it. The next day, Joseph bought the bicycle he had set his eyes on from the same shop. Most of the popular martial art styles such as taekwondo, karate, judo, aikido and even silat are from Asia. These are self-defence techniques that can be learnt and used by anyone. Silat is a popular martial arts form practised in Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia. Its origins can be traced back to the ancient kingdom of Langkasuka in the Malay Peninsula around the second century AD. Like other types of martial arts, silat was created as a form of self-defence during battles and was popularly used by warriors at that time. Today, however, it is more of a performance art. The silat performances today are accompanied by traditional musical instruments, such as flutes, drums and gongs. If silat is used for self-defence and fighting, the exponent has to undergo physical, mental and spiritual training involving footwork and hand movements. Most of the different silat styles are influenced by nature and the environment, especially animals and plants. In Malaysia there are about 150 silat styles. Some of the popular styles are the silat harimau, which was inspired by the tiger’s strength and power, silat gayong, silat cekak and silat lincah, among others. It is basically a body of salt water. The volume of water in the world’s oceans is about 1.335 billion cubic kilometers. There are altogether five oceans, which are the Pacific, the Indian, the Arctic, the Atlantic and the Southern, which make up the world oceans. The largest and deepest ocean is the Pacific Ocean while the smallest is the Arctic Ocean. The Pacific Ocean covers around 37% of the earth’s surface. It is the largest water mass on the planet. It is located between Asia, Australia and the Americas. The Pacific Ocean was named by the Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, as he sailed through a calm patch of water in this particular ocean. He called this body of water “pacific” (which means peaceful), due to the calmness of the water at the time. The deepest point in the earth’s crust, known as the Challenger Deep, which is about 6.77 miles deep, is located here, at the bottom of the Mariana Trench. This immense body of water is often responsible for some of the serious occurrences of hurricanes, cyclones and typhoons due to the large expanse of warm water it holds. The area around the edges of the ocean is called the ‘Ring of Fire’ because of the occurrence of earthquakes and volcanic activity around the edges. This deep sea is home to many different sea creatures as well as the world’s largest living structure – the Great Barrier Reef. UASA Form 3 Set 3(5th)15/3/23.indd 6 15/03/2023 1:33 PM

My primary school was just a short drive away and my secondary school in Sri Hartamas was within walking distance. When I was fifteen years old, I was picked to enter a government boarding school. Not many of my classmates were picked, so I was proud I was one of the few. Some of the older students had been picked to go to boarding school before. However, most of them did not last long there. They came back to study at Sri Hartamas after only a few months because they got too homesick. One of my teachers told me that I would not last long there either. This made me very determined to stay at boarding school, no matter how hard it was. My boarding school was in Pasir Puteh, Kelantan. I had never been to Kelantan before. The weekend before the start of the school term, my father, mother, brother and I packed all my bags into our car and started on the drive to Pasir Puteh which took seven hours. As someone who had grown up in Kuala Lumpur, Pasir Puteh felt like a very small town. It reminded me of my mother’s village in Negeri Sembilan. There were hardly any fast-food outlets or shopping malls. When we arrived at the school, I was shown to my dormitory that slept eight people. I had a bunk bed and a small cupboard to put all my things in. There were shared toilets and bathrooms at the end of the hall. It felt strange because before this, I always had a whole room to myself. I only had to share the bathroom with my brother. I waved goodbye to my family and settled in for my first night at boarding school. It was not until I was lying in my bunk bed, listening to the chatter of my dormitory mates that I realised that I was all alone in a totally new place! I felt a sudden sadness and cried myself to sleep that night. By Cindy Krishna UASA Form 3 Set 3(5th)15/3/23.indd 7 15/03/2023 1:33 PM
