The Penang Bridge The Penang Bridge, a 13.5-kilometer dual carriageway, was the first and only road connection between the peninsula and the island of Penang until 2014. The second Penang Bridge, also known as the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge, which is 24 kilometers long, opened to traffic on March 2, 2014. (27) The idea to build the iconic Penang Bridge was suggested by the late Tun Abdul Razak, the second Prime Minister of Malaysia and the late Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu, the second Chief Minister of Penang. (28) The bridge is well known as the second longest bridge in Malaysia and the fifth-longest in Southeast Asia and a national landmark.
