5 © Global Mediastreet Sdn. Bhd. (762284-U) Read the passage carefully and choose the best answer A, B, C or D. COMPREHENSION In the last decade, there have been several dramatic improvements in the capabilities of household robots. Household robots are not something you see or read only in sci-fi stories and movies anymore. Today, there are a variety of household robots available on the market. The future looks bright for these household robots and they are becoming commonplace in our everyday lives. Robotic cleaning equipment is already used in homes, offices, restaurants, hospitals and clinics. These domestic robots can be programmed to perform several tasks to make life easy for busy working people. They can be programmed to do things like dusting, stocking the closet, sweeping the floor, and many other chores. While previously, household robots were only considered to be things of science fiction, they are now well within the realm of possibility. If your garage, attic, or other room needs some general maintenance and upkeep, a robot may be exactly what you need. The iRobot launched its first robotic vacuum cleaner, Roomba in 2002. The product had only basic Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities, such as identifying walls and avoiding stairs using built-in sensors. However, the latest Roomba model has advanced decision-making capabilities, powered by AI. The new model robot is capable of scanning the room size, identifying obstacles and remembering the most efficient routes and methods. Another household cleaning robot, RX-V100, is embedded with a speech recognition AI engine to enable tasks, such as reporting through a combination of blinking lights and spoken messages. For example, when a user gives a voice command to the robot to “Clean”, the RX-V100 uses AI speech to reply, “Alright” to acknowledge the command. In addition, this product comes with a set of predefined messages and responses to simulate simple conversations, such as “Good Morning” or “How is it going?” Robotic cleaning equipment is not only a comforting thought for those who have children but for those who wish to become more self-sufficient in the face of a sick family member or oneself. These robots can help with chores such as cleaning up drink spills, emptying garbage cans, etc. As the demand for these robots continues to grow and become more sophisticated, they will be able to do more difficult jobs and therefore, become more expensive. The initial costs associated with such a device would depend on how complex it would be. While initially expensive, the cost of home robots will become affordable with time and demand. Household robots can even make life easier for elderly and disabled individuals who are often left alone in a home. A house robot can assist with common house tasks like cooking and cleaning, which can make a person more independent. By making the elderly feel less dependent on others, they may be more willing to move into an assisted living or dementia care facility. They may also feel safer knowing a robot is always around to look after the house and pets. Robots are also being tested to work alongside people in a nursing home setting, looking after the senior residents while they are recovering from injuries or illnesses brought about by the senior citizen’s own condition. The future of household robots looks strong and potentially very useful. They are already gaining a foothold in our world, as evidenced by news reports of robots not just doing menial jobs around the home, such as dusting or washing the dishes, but also taking over the task of cleaning the entire house thus further boosting the popularity of robotic cleaning devices. Advanced household robots are just the first wave of AI technologies that will arrive in the near future.

Consumerism has been affected greatly by the Covid-19 pandemic that has changed several things in our lives over the past few years.
