SULIT 86 1119/1 1119/1 © Penerbit Mahir Sdn Bhd (183897-P) SULIT Part 1 Questions 1 to 8 are based on the given stimuli. Read the text carefully and choose the best answer A, B or C. For each question, mark your answer on your answer sheet. 1 Which of the following statements is true? A People seek public funding because they are desperate. B People try to get money from others because they want to be treated overseas. C The public is unaware of the financial assistance from MAF and IJN foundations. The Health Ministry and the National Heart Institute (IJN) have funds to help people seeking medical treatment, but Malaysians still turn to the public for help to have surgery performed at public hospitals and overseas. A check by a local daily revealed that many seek public donations because they are in the dark about the application process or are afraid of the process itself. Patients can get full financial assistance from the ministry’s Medical Assistance Fund (MAF) and the IJN Foundation. 2 Which of the following statements is true? A The UN is seeking immediate funding to fight ecological catastrophes. B Corporate planning is needed to overcome the threat to Mother Earth. C International co-operation is of paramount importance. The world cannot wait any longer – that is the message from the United Nations to all countries to cut carbon emissions and reduce disastrous effects on the climate. Unless the international community agrees to cut carbon emissions by half over the next generation, climate change is likely to cause large-scale human and economic setbacks and irreversible ecological catastrophes. 3 Which of the following could be one of the main reasons for the reduced number of Sumatran rhinos? A Lack of food B Illegal hunting C Climatic changes The Royal Belum State Park is a new site for WWF rhino conservation. Royal Belum was officially gazetted as a state park by the Perak Government, thus giving it more freedom to develop in-depth conservation activities at the site. Surveys indicate the number of Sumatran rhinos may be small and limited to only a few areas. Poaching is rampant as traps, bullet cartridges and abandoned campsites have been discovered.

SULIT 90 1119/1 1119/1 © Penerbit Mahir Sdn Bhd (183897-P) SULIT Part 3 Questions 19 to 26 are based on the following passage. Read the passage carefully and choose the best answer A, B, C or D. For each question, mark your answer on the answer sheet. One afternoon, I saw a boy from my class walking home from school. He was rather new to our school. I hardly knew him and to be honest, I really did not go out of my way to get to know him. He was one of those students who topped all the tests. His name was Kyle. It appeared like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, “Why would anyone bring home all his books on Friday? He must really be a nerd!” I shrugged my shoulders and headed home. As I was walking, I saw a group of kids running towards him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him. He landed in the dirt. His glasses went fl ying and I saw them land in the grass ten feet from him. He looked up and I saw a terrible sadness in his eyes. My heart went out to him. So, I ran over to him as he crawled around looking for his glasses. As I handed him his glasses, I said, “Those guys are jerks. They really should learn some manners!” He looked at me and said, “Hey, thanks!” There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. I helped him pick up his books and asked him where he lived. As it turned out, he lived near me and so we decided to walk home together. We talked all the way home. I asked him if he wanted to play football on Saturday with me and my friends. He said, “Yes.” Kyle hung out with my friends and me all weekend and the more I got to know him, the more I liked him and so did my friends. Monday morning came and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again. I stopped him and said, “Boy, you are really going to build some big muscles with this pile of books every day!” He just laughed. Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends. When we were seniors, we began to think about college. Kyle decided on Georgetown University and I was going to Duke. I knew that we would always be friends. The miles apart would never be a problem. On the morning of Graduation Day, I met Kyle at the school entrance. He looked great. He was one of the guys who really found himself during high school. He had fi lled out and actually looked good in glasses. He had become one of the most popular students. Sometimes, I even felt jealous and this was one of the times. But, he was looking extremely nervous. As the top student, he had to deliver the graduation speech. I was so glad it was not me having to get up there and speak. So, I slapped him on the back and said, “Hey, Big Guy, you’ll be great!” He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled. As he started his speech, Kyle cleared his throat and began, “Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years – your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach but mostly your friends. I am here to tell you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them. I am going to tell you a story.” I just stared at my friend in disbelief as he told the story of the fi rst day we met. He had planned to kill himself over the weekend. He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his mother would not have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home. He looked at me and gave me a little smile. “Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable.” I heard a gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment. I saw his parents looking at me, smiling that same grateful smile. Not until that moment did I realise its depth.

SULIT 92 1119/1 1119/1 © Penerbit Mahir Sdn Bhd (183897-P) SULIT Part 4 Questions 27 to 32 You are going to read an article on reducing carbon footprint. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (27 to 32). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use. Mark your answers on the separate answer sheet. Recently, campaigners have encouraged us to buy local food. This reduces ‘food miles’, that is, the distance food travels to get from the producer to the retailer. They reason that the higher the food miles, the more carbon emissions. 27 However, the real story is not as simple as that. 28 According to a 2008 study, only 11% of carbon emissions in the food production process result from transportation. 29 In fact, imported food often has a lower carbon footprint than locally grown food. Take apples, for example. In autumn, when apples are harvested, the best option for a British resident is to buy British apples. 30 In spring, therefore, it is more energy-efficient to import them from New Zealand, where they are in season. Heating also uses a lot of energy, which is why growing tomatoes in heated greenhouses in the UK is less environmentally friendly than importing them from Spain, where the crop grows well in the local climate. We must also take into account the type of transport. 31 However, only a small percentage of goods are flown to the consumer country, and these are usually high value, perishable items which we cannot produce locally, such as seafood and out-of-season berries. Even then, these foods may not have a higher carbon footprint than locally grown food. For example, beans flown in from Kenya are grown in sunny fields using manual labour and natural fertilisers, unlike in Britain, where we use oil-based fertilisers and diesel machinery. 32 Remember that a product’s journey does not end at the supermarket. The distance consumers travel to buy their food, and the kind of transport they use will also add to its carbon footprint.
