14 © Global Mediastreet Sdn. Bhd. (762284-U) Part C READING PRACTICE 1 Read the text below and answer questions 1 to 8. Sarawak Longhouse Last August, my family and I went to Sarawak for one week. As this was our fi rst visit, we wanted to experience living in a longhouse because we had heard so much about them. These longhouses are located in the interior of Sarawak. To get to these longhouses, one can either travel for a day on the road or use a boat. The longhouses are built on stilts and normally have 30 to 50 rooms, one for each family. As the longhouse we stayed in was built high above the ground, we had to climb up a specifi c tree trunk to get to the longhouse. These longhouses were once home to the many local ethnic groups, especially the Iban and Bidayuh. My uncle, who belongs to the Bidayuh ethnic group, took us to his longhouse located in the Penrissen area. We travelled by road to get there. According to my uncle, the most popular and frequently visited longhouses by tourists are the Kampong Benuk and Annah Rais longhouses. The journey from Kuching to my uncle’s longhouse took about an hour and a half. When we reached his longhouse, we were greeted with traditional dances and music and served tuak, a special rice wine. We stayed in the longhouse for three days and had the time of our life.

Victoria Falls Victoria Falls, one of the greatest natural wonders of the world located in Africa, is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world. Victoria Falls is located on the Zambezi River, the fourth largest river in Africa, which also determines the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. While it is neither the highest nor the widest waterfall in the world, Victoria Falls is the largest due to its width of more than a kilometre and height of more than a hundred metres (108 metres). Victoria Falls is roughly twice the height of North America’s Niagara Falls. The noise from the falling waters of the Victoria Falls can be heard from a distance of 40 kilometres, while the spray and mist from the falling water rise to a height of over 400 metres and can be seen from a distance of 50 kilometres. No wonder that the local tribes used to call the waterfall Mosi-oa-Tunya or ‘the smoke that thunders’. Dr David Livingstone, the Scottish missionary and explorer, is believed to have been the fi rst to view Victoria Falls on November 16, 1855, from what is now known as Livingstone Island, one of two land masses in the middle of the river. He named the falls after Queen Victoria of Britain. The waterfall was hardly visited by people up until 1905, when Zimbabwe gained independence. The region around Victoria Falls started to attract tourists. By the end of 1990, nearly 300,000 people were visiting the falls each year. Victoria Falls is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, in addition to the falls, tourists fl ock to the surrounding Victoria Falls National Park and Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park to enjoy the wildlife and other recreational facilities.

I am sorry for not writing earlier. I was busy helping my grandfather tidy up his house. My grandmother wanted all her grandchildren to clear the house of the many things that he had been collecting over the years. My grandfather is actually a hoarder and can’t bring himself to throw anything away! I must tell you something very interesting. You know my grandfather has been collecting music albums since his teenage days. Last week, when we were cleaning his cupboards, we found a whole lot of records. According to my grandmother, he used to spend his evenings listening to songs by The Beatles. They were his favourite group and he spent hours listening to their songs. Have you heard of The Beatles? They were an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960. Even today, they are regarded as the most infl uential band of all time and considered to have done great things for the music industry. The Beatles built their reputation playing in clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over a three-year period from 1960. As their popularity grew, the band acquired the nickname ‘the Fab Four’ as their group consisted of four members. In 1964, they made their fi lm debut with A Hard Day’s Night. The group broke up in 1970 and the members went on to become solo artists. As a band, they received many accolades. For instance, they won seven Grammy Awards and an Academy Award (for Best Original Song Score for the 1970 fi lm Let It Be). They were also collectively included in Time magazine’s compilation of the twentieth century’s 100 most infl uential people. Can you beat that? Jillian
