(a) Male reproductive organs (b) Female reproductive organs Penis Testis 3 Each of the human reproductive organs has its own function. Organs Functions Uterus The place for embryo to develop and grow Fallopian tube The place where fertilisation of an ovum and a sperm happens Ovary Produces ova (eggs) Vagina The channel to receive sperms and the pathway for a baby during birth Testis Produces sperms Penis Transfer sperms into the vagina Uterus Fallopian tube Vagina Ovary 4 The process of human reproduction from fertilisation until birth: The penis transfers sperms into the vagina The sperms swim towards ovum. Fertilisation process occurs when one sperm diffuses with one ovum in the Fallopian tube. Fertilised ovum is known as zygote. The zygote divide a few times to form an embryo. 5 The importance of reproduction to humans: (a) To ensure the survival of human species (b) To increase the number of new individuals The embryo attaches to the uterus wall and grow into a foetus. The fully-grown foetus moves from the uterus to the vagina and out of the mother’s body during birth. The foetus is known as a baby. HUMANS 2 Theme: Life Science

No. 762284-U) 17 Nervous System 1 The nervous system controls everything we do including sensing, breathing, moving, emotion and heartbeat. 2 There are two types of the nervous system: Types Functions 1 Central nervous system Brain Coordinate voluntary actions and involuntary actions Spinal cord • Carries the signals between the brain and the rest of the body • Control some of reflex actions 2 Peripheral nervous system Neural nerves • Carry signals from the whole body to the central nervous system • Carry command signals from the central nervous system to the whole body for response 3 If the peripheral nervous system does not function, we cannot carry out the body activities as usual. For example the damage of the peripheral nervous system will cause: (a) Bell’s palsy (b) body balance problem 4 Ways to take care of the nervous system health: (a) Eat a balanced diet (b) Exercise regularly (c) Get enough sleep (d) Avoid liquors, drugs and prohibited substances 1 2

LS2.1.2 After about 9 months, the foetus is born through the vagina and is known as a baby. The embryo develops in the uterus and becomes a foetus complete with its organs. The sperms swim towards the Fallopian tube and one sperm successfully fuses with one ovum. Fertilisation process takes place. The zygote formed divides and becomes an embryo. Sperms are channeled by the penis into the vagina.

The following are the examples of waste material by types: Types of waste material Example Glass Bottles, mirror Paper Newspaper, boxes Plastic Bags, food containers Metal Milk can, drink can Toxic waste Engine oil, paint Food waste Bones, vegetables Faeces Animal faeces 3 Waste material can also be divided into: (a) Biodegradable waste (b) Non-biodegradable waste 4 Biodegradable waste is the material that can be decomposed by microorganisms such as food waste, papers and faeces. 5 Non-biodegradable waste is the material that cannot be decomposed by microorganisms such as glasses, plastics, metals and toxic waste. 6 We need to use biodegradable and non-biodegradable material wisely to: (a) reduce pollution (b) prevent flash flood 7 Waste must be well managed to ensure cleanliness and sustainability to the environment. Some of the good management practices are: (a) Separate waste material by types before dispose. (b) Using special containers to dispose chemical substances and toxic waste.
