INFORMATION TRANSFER First Man in Space Sixty-two years ago, a Russian cosmonaut named Yuri Gagarin accomplished what no man had done before. He became the first man to journey into outer space. The historic date was 12 April 1961. Yuri Gagarin was born on 9 March 1934 in Klushino, the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. Later, he volunteered at a local flying club and trained as a Soviet air cadet. In 1955, he was accepted to the First Chkalvosky Higher Air Force Pilots School where he eventually became a lieutenant. He expressed interest in space exploration and was recommended to the Soviet space programme. After months of physical and psychological endurance tests, he was selected. He boarded Vostok 1, a spacecraft early in the morning at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, and it blasted off into space at 9.07 a.m., Moscow time. The spacecraft orbited Earth once. The journey took 1 hour 29 minutes. Yuri Gagarin landed back on Soviet soil at 10.55 a.m. He descended back to Earth by ejecting himself from the spacecraft, and he landed by parachute near Volga River. His space adventure made him famous internationally. He was awarded the Order of Lenin and Hero of the Soviet Union. He never made another spaceflight after that.

The Forbidden Island In the Bay of Bengal lies North Sentinel Island, one of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Indian archipelago. Covered by thick vegetation, it is home to the elusive Sentinelese, an indigenous tribe. They have lived on the island for over 50,000 years, isolated from the world and seemingly untouched by the passing of time. This is one place on Earth where visitors are unwelcomed and forbidden to go. The Indian government issued the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Regulation, 1956, that stated all areas occupied by the tribes were to be tribal reserves. No one was allowed entry except by authorisation. This was to prevent the islanders from contracting modern diseases as they have not developed immunity towards them. The exact number of Sentinelese is not known, and it could be anywhere from 50 to 500. The Sentinelese have been described as very hostile to any outside contact. They attack vessels and boats which attempt to visit the island. In fact, in 2006, it was reported that two fi shermen were killed by the islanders when their boat drifted to the island. The Sentinelese live in the ways of the old. They are hunter-gatherers, and they depend on the island for food and shelter. They also fi sh for food in the sea using small canoe-like boats. Weapons made of stones are used in their hunt. It was also observed that the Sentinelese did not to appear to wear any clothing but were adorned with fi bre strings, headbands and necklaces made of vines. An interesting fact is that the Sentinelese survived the 2004 earthquake and tsunami. Islanders could be seen shooting arrows and spears at the Indian government helicopter that was sent to observe the parts aff ected by the natural disaster.

My Journey on the North Borneo Railway During one of my travels to Borneo island, I took the opportunity to take a ride on the North Borneo Railway. It is the only railway line on the island. In 1896, construction of the railway began under the command of Arthur Joseph West, an engineer. He was assisted by Gounon Lulus from the Murut tribe. The rail was intended for transporting tobacco from the inlands to the coastal areas for export. Today, it has become a tourist attraction as many are eager to take a ride on the oldest steam locomotive in Borneo. The track is 134 km long and connects Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu to the town of Tenom, which is located in the Interior Division of Sabah. The train runs every Wednesday and Saturday, so make sure to check the schedule before buying the tickets. The ride certainly brought up nostalgic feelings. It seemed as though I had travelled back into the grandeur of the past. The fi ve carriages of the train are furnished with vintage upholstery. Do not expect it to be airconditioned, though. Upon arrival, I was served a light breakfast which consisted of a curry puff , local kueh and kaya toast. I enjoyed my meal as the train chugged leisurely past kampung houses, lush forests, rivers and occasionally the South China Sea. It stopped at Kinarut Town for passengers to visit the colourful Tien Shi Temple. After that, we visited the wet market of Papar, a small town along the way. Lunch was served in a tiffi n carrier on the journey back to Tanjung Aru. The menu of the day included fi sh curry, stir-fried fern with prawns, Sabah brown hill rice and local fruits. All in all, it was a relaxing journey and a wonderful experience for me.
