SULIT 27 1119/1 [Lihat halaman sebelah] SULIT 1119/1 © Penerbit Mahir Sdn Bhd (183897-P) Part 3 Questions 19 to 26 are based on the following passage. Read the passage carefully and choose the best answer A, B, C or D. For each question mark your answer on the answer sheet. It was a scorching sunny afternoon. As expected, the field was packed with students practising for the school sports that was to be held the next day. They were all distraught. The strong spirit of competition and the desire to be the champions was getting to everyone. Serena was no exception. She too felt she had to win. Her old grandfather was the one who had instilled in her a strong love for sports. He had been an athlete and a high jumper but had failed to make it to the national level. So, he had pinned all his hopes on his granddaughter. He was the one who had been with her when she practised her high jump for months. Serena’s favourite activity was browsing through the old photos of her grandfather taking part in sports competitions. Sweat was trickling down her face and messing it up as she completed her last practice. Her T-shirt was soaked through so she changed into dry clothes before leaving the field. When she arrived home that evening, the house was very quiet. Her mother greeted her with a worried look, “Grandpa’s illness got worse today. Go and talk to him.” Serena’s grandfather was old and had been sick for the past three months. His illness had taken a heavy toll on him so much so he even found it difficult to sit up. When he saw her, he smiled feebly and asked, “So Serena, how was your practice today?” They talked for a while and suddenly she asked him. “Grandpa, how tall are you?” The old man rubbed his nose and said, “Oh, I used to be a towering 1.90 metres tall. Now, I’ve shrunk. Why are you asking about my height?” She nodded, “Someday, Grandpa, I’ll make a jump as high as that. I promise you that.” The old man patted her hand and said, “That’s a very big leap for a girl but I’m sure you’ll be able to do it. I can’t wait for the day when you fulfil your promise.” The next morning, she woke up early. It was that very important day. Before she left, she peeped into her grandfather’s room. He was still sleeping. So she tiptoed to his bed and kissed him on his forehead. When she got to the field, it was already crowded with participants. They looked confident and every inch a winner. Serena jogged a bit and did some warm-up exercises. Thinking of her grandfather’s encouraging words, her confidence returned. Just before her event, she saw her mother walking towards her. There was something in her mother’s expression that disturbed her. “Is anything wrong?” she asked. “Your grandfather is very ill and is in hospital. But he would want you to do your event. We’ll come and fetch you later.” Serena felt tears welling in her eyes when she thought of how ill her grandfather was. But she knew she should not get upset for she had to do her best to make her grandfather proud of her. It was then when she heard her name being called out. The high jump event was about to begin. When it was her turn, she looked at the crossbar and thought that it looked higher than usual. Feeling a sense of panic, she despaired. “I won’t be able to do it.” But when she heard the whistle blow, she ran up the runway to gain momentum for the jump. As she did so, she was filled with strong determination to succeed for the sake of her grandfather and for the promise she had made to him: “Someday, Grandpa, I’ll make a jump as high as that.” So, she leapt in a way that she had never done before. It was a well-performed high jump, and she landed steadily. The spectators and judges noticed her skill and grace. They applauded loudly. In the midst of all that, she could only hear her grandfather’s words, “I’m sure you’ll jump higher than that. I can’t wait for the day when you fulfil your promise.” And she whispered, “Yes, I did it, Grandpa. For you.” PENERBIT MAHIR SDN BHD

SULIT 49 1119/1 [Lihat halaman sebelah] SULIT 1119/1 © Penerbit Mahir Sdn Bhd (183897-P) Part 4 Questions 27 to 32 are based on an article about Malacca. Six (6) sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (27 to 32). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use. Mark your answer on the answer sheet. Malacca: History & Legends Malacca’s history and legends go back as far as the late 14th century, starting from its humble beginnings as a coastal village and rise to prominence under the Malaccan Sultanate to cautionary tales of fairies and loyalty to the king. Locals believe the state was the impetus towards the development of what would eventually become Malaysia. In 1396, a Sumatran prince by the name of Parameswara fled his country out of fear of the attacking Majapahit Empire. 27 He then established himself on the island that is now known as Singapore. A few years later, he was driven out by a Thai-controlled army and once again, was left scouting for a new piece of land. Eventually, he moved up the West Coast of Malaysia and founded Malacca. 28 A mouse deer kicked his hunting dogs into the river when they attacked it. Declaring the place to be auspicious, he decided to set up shop and named the place after the tree under which he was resting, Melaka. In 1414, Parameswara converted to Islam, leading him to become Sultan of Malacca. The city was also growing into a prominent trading ground for traders from across Asia, notably India, Arabia and China. 29 Malacca also established contact with the Chinese empire through the explorer Zheng He. A century later, the Portuguese came, saw and conquered Malacca in 1511. This was a milestone for the Western colonists looking to extend their empire to the East Indies. 30 With the help of the Sultan of Johor (descended from a Malaccan Sultan), the Dutch captured the port and ruled over it until 1795, when Malacca was ceded to the British under an exchange programme for Batavia (Jakarta) in Indonesia. The British East India Company developed Malacca and spread their influence all over Malaya, enforcing control over the trade industry and employing governors to rule each state. 31 Finally, Malacca, along with the rest of Malaya received her independence in 1957, paving the way for the future, which is today. During the time of Malacca’s Sultanate, many legends and stories were told, including of Hang Tuah, a warrior with superior skill and had utmost loyalty to the Sultan. The Malaccan officials were jealous of Hang Tuah’s favour with the Sultan. 32 The Sultan ordered Hang Tuah to be put to death. Ferns in the Environment The hardy fern has a root system that branches out and adds moisture to the soil, which helps prevent soil erosion and aids stabilisation. They are great indicators of soil, air and water quality. Their fronds are sensitive to pollutants. Studies have revealed that ferns help remove heavy metals from soil. The Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus is a fake animal created in 1998 by Lyle Zapato. Zapato’s website says the tree octopus is real, and that it lives on both land and water. Zapato created this website about the fake tree octopus to show how important it is to think carefully about whether things on the Internet are true. The original website that described the fake species is commonly used as an example in internet literacy classes to teach students to check more carefully if sources of information are reliable. The text included other hoax species and organisations, mixed with links to pages about real species and organisations. Despite the falsehoods shown on the site, all 25 seventh-grade students involved in one well-publicised test believed the content. All but one of the 25 rated the site as ‘very credible’. Nadia Abdullah was invited by the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Project head to spend a day looking after the pandas in their state-ofthe-art panda sanctuary. Nadia said, “I saw Mei Yuan and the other keepers feeding the cubs with bottled milk. It was incredible. The moment Mei Yuan shouted, the cubs knew it was feeding time.” Nadia was able to feed one of the cubs under the expert guidance of the keeper. Nadia also learnt how to feed apple using a piece of string attached to a long bamboo pole. It was an unforgettable experience for young Nadia who was chosen by the Malaysian government to go on the trip. PENERBIT MAHIR SDN BHD

A The silverback was the only animal that got better after treatment. B The Covid-19 virus caused Karen to go through an open-heart surgery. C The scientists are worried about the number of apes that contract the virus easily. An orangutan named Karen, the first in the world to have open-heart surgery in 1994, has made medical history again: She’s among the first great apes to get a Covid-19 vaccine. In February, Karen, three other orangutans, and five bonobos at the San Diego Zoo received two doses each of an experimental vaccine for animals developed by a veterinary pharmaceutical company, says Nadine Lamberski, chief conservation and wildlife health officer at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. In January, a troop of eight gorillas at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park became the first great apes in the world to test positive for the novel coronavirus. The silverback, 49-year-old Winston, fell ill with heart disease and pneumonia, but following experimental antibody treatment, he is recovering, as are the others. Globally, infections have also been confirmed in tigers, lions, mink, snow leopards, cougars, a ferret, dogs and domestic cats, but the fact that great apes are susceptible to the virus has scientists especially concerned. 5 Which of the following statements is true? C Diversity activities help young children to be more careful of their surroundings. Diversity activities teach young children to respect and celebrate the differences in all people. Learning about different cultural aspects offers new experiences for children. When do children notice differences between people? Mark your answer on the answer sheet. A French police officer who used to work for Direction Générale de la Sécurité Intérieure (DGSI) or the General Directorate for Internal Security – a French intelligence agency – was arrested for selling confidential police data on the dark web in exchange for Bitcoin. 27 The officer was also charged with counter-espionage, counter-terrorism, countering cybercrime and surveillance of potentially threatening groups, organisations, and social phenomena. The newspaper, Le Parisien said that it obtained a statement of one of the clients of the arrested French police officer. Investigators said that Haurus claimed he could get the bank statement of an account holder in exchange for the holder’s mobile number and €30. Haurus also reportedly claimed that he could supply details such as an individual’s civil status information. 28 The investigators suspect that he could have stolen confidential police files to which he already had access, and later sold on the dark web. 29 The officer also reportedly posted advertisements offering to share the location of a mobile device using just the victim’s phone number. On top of it, Haurus also posted advertisements on the dark web that offered to notify dark web criminals. 30 The illegal activities were first tracked down by the judicial police. 31 Using the personal code that every French officer is provided, the internal security investigators were able to zero in on the real identity of the corrupt officer. This code allows the authorities to track the origin of a file query and monitor the history. 32 It is still unclear as to how much jail time Haurus is expected to get. However, violation by a state agency is punishable up to seven years’ imprisonment. (Source: https://cyware.com/news) PENERBIT MAHIR SDN BHD

B Rohit was able to manage his time well during the examination. C Mahesh was certain that he and Rohit will be obtaining A+. 8 Which of the following statements is true? A Idioms and proverbs are the same. B Proverbs are known sayings that have been accepted by the public. C Idioms and proverbs can both be easily understood by adults and children. Rohit : The paper was long, wasn’t it? Mahesh : Yes, unusually long. For sure, we won’t see as many 95+ marks for English this year. Rohit : How did you do? Mahesh : So-so. I wish I had timed myself better. In the end, I left questions worth 10 marks unattempted. How about you? Rohit : I started off well. In fact I was ahead of time on grammar and letter writing, but this year’s reading comprehension passages were just too tough for me, and it completely derailed my time management. (https://lemongrad.com/conversation-between-twofriends/) An idiom is a phrase or expression that has a meaning that in most cases cannot be deduced directly from the individual words in that phrase or expression. For example, the idiom ‘bite off more than you can chew’ doesn’t mean you bite more than a mouthful of a cake or something else and then struggle to chew. It means you try to do something that is too difficult for you. How are they different from proverbs? Proverbs are well-known sayings, stating a general truth or advice. For example, the proverb ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ is a general truth. The idiom ‘bite off more than you can chew’, however, is neither a general truth nor a piece of advice. SULIT 91 1119/1 [Lihat halaman sebelah] SULIT 1119/1 © Penerbit Mahir Sdn Bhd (183897-P) Part 5 Questions 33 to 40 are based on the following texts. Read the texts carefully and answer the questions that follow. India’s Contribution to Science and Technology A – Ancient dentistry (7,000 BC) According to historians, the Indus Valley Civilisation has revealed evidence of dentistry being practised as far back as 7,000 BC. One dig site in Mehrgarh even showed evidence of healers curing tooth disorders with bow drills. B – Ancient flush toilet systems (2,500 BC) Another feature of the Indus Valley Civilisation was water-flushed toilets. Both in Harappa and Mohenjodaro, almost every home had a flush toilet, connected to a sophisticated sewage system. C – Ruler (2,400 BC) Areas of the Indus Valley Civilisation in both now-Pakistan and Western India have had rulers made of ivory uncovered from ruins. One such specimen was even calibrated to 1/16 of an inch – less than 2 mm. These kinds of rulers were clearly very prominent, as even bricks of the valley’s buildings were found to follow the same measurements. D – Plastic surgery (2,000 BC) Historians believe plastic surgery was being carried out in India as early as near 2,000 BC. To clarify, plastic in this phrase doesn’t refer to the petroleum byproduct but to plastikē or ‘the art of modelling’ malleable flesh. Eventually, it was ancient Indian physician Sushruta who was credited with being the father of plastic surgery around 600 BC. His books and teachings eventually made their way to Europe centuries later. E – Earth's orbit (700 AD) Hindu cosmological time cycles found in the Surya Siddhanta, written between 700 BC to 600 AD, give the time it takes the Earth to revolve around the Sun at 365.2563627 days. This is just a miniscule 1.4 seconds longer than the modern value of 365.256363004 days, and was the most accurate estimate in the world for over a thousand years. F – Spinning wheel (500 AD) This mechanised method of spinning yarn was invented in India, between 500 and 1,000 AD, eventually replacing hand spinning across the world. The Charkha, as it came to be called, eventually went on to become the symbol of India’s independence movement. (Source: https://www.indiatimes.com/technology/) PENERBIT MAHIR SDN BHD
