13 © Global Mediastreet Sdn. Bhd. (762284-U) Part C READING PRACTICE 1 Read the text below and answer questions 1 to 8. The Lake District The Lake District, also known as the Lakes or Lakeland, is a mountainous region and is located entirely within the county of Cumbria in England. A popular holiday destination, it is famous for its lakes, forests and mountains. The Lake District National Park established in 1951, covers an area of 2,362 square kilometres and is the largest national park in England. It was awarded the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. All the land in England higher than 3,000 feet (914 m) above sea level lies within this district, including Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England which is 978 m high. It also contains the deepest and largest natural lakes in England. Offi cially, there is only one lake in the Lake District, called Bassenthwaite Lake, which is one of the largest water bodies in the English Lake District. It is long and narrow, approximately 6.4 km long and 1.2 km wide, and is located near Keswick. However, there are 16 other bodies of water considered to be the “lakes” of the Lake District. Lake District was formed by volcanic activity about 450 million years ago. The mountains in the Lake District are actually older than the Himalayas. The Lake District gets around 15 million visitors every year. They come for many reasons such as the beautiful scenery or to take part in adventure activities such as hiking or climbing. The lakes also provide the perfect environment to participate in water sports such as swimming and kayaking.

19 © Global Mediastreet Sdn. Bhd. (762284-U) PRACTICE 4 Read the text below and answer questions 1 to 8. The blue whale is not only the largest animal on Earth, it is the largest animal that has ever existed on the planet. At 30 meters and 180,000 kg, an adult blue whale is longer than two badminton courts and heavier than 15 school buses, although its brain weighs only 7 kg. In addition, the heart of a blue whale is so large that an adult human could crawl through the blood vessels. The blue whale feeds on microscopic animals known as krill, and can eat over 3,000 kg of them in a single day, swallowing huge quantities of water and fi ltering the krill out using giant brush-like fi lters in its mouth. The whale will hold its breath and dive up to 300 meters deep to feed. While the cold waters of the south pole are their feeding grounds, blue whales swim to the equator to breed, which they do every two or three years. A newborn blue whale is about 7 meters long and weighs about 3,000 kg, and can grow as much as 90 kg every 24 hours. Their size and power make blue whales extremely diffi cult to hunt, but that does not deter every predator. The killer whale, or orca, often attempts to attack the blue whale in packs despite being signifi cantly smaller. Blue whales have also collided with ships due to the amount of man-made noise present in the ocean interfering with their hearing, which is how whales navigate the seas.
