© Penerbit Mahir Sdn. Bhd. (183897-P) 22 English Form 5 Unit 4 Shopping is a necessary part of life which very few people can avoid. It is a daily routine for some people. Some shop for pleasure while others go shopping just to buy necessities in order to survive. The weekend is usually a good time to go shopping because people have free time from work. Shops are usually very busy at weekends because people try to get the best items for the lowest price before the item goes out of stock. Items which are popular must be bought quickly or it is likely that the shop will run out of stock. Items which are very rarely bought are sometimes lowered in price to encourage customers to buy them and allow for the shop to make space for new stock. Most shops sell similar items although bigger stores or supermarkets may sell things cheaper than smaller shops. Some people go shopping more regularly to browse products in shops even when they do not have much money. This is known as window shopping and it allows people to plan ahead and save for the things they want to buy in the future or wait for the items to drop in price. Some people spend a lot of time looking for bargains while others do not worry about the price and are happy to spend a lot. Some people believe that the more expensive the item, the better the quality, but this is not always true. It is sensible to buy items which are aff ordable, but some people use a credit card or borrow money from the bank so that they can buy the items they really want rather than wait for it. Some people see price as more important than quality while others try to buy things that are of good quality and aff ordable. It is often true that better quality items will usually last longer but they also usually cost more money. It is a good idea to wait for special discounts to get both the right price and quality. Special discounts are common around the same time as public holidays or celebrations such as Christmas and New Year. Sometimes shopping can be stressful when choosing a gift for someone for a special occasion. It is common to buy a gift voucher so that a friend or loved one can go shopping themselves at their own convenience. Shopping online is often popular with people who have a busy lifestyle. People are able to order what they want from the comfort of their own home, or even when on the move. Delivery is usually free and items are often cheaper than in shops on the high street. The only real problem is that the item description and quality may be diff erent than what they hoped for. This could mean the customer may be disappointed with the item they receive and will need to return it at their own cost. People who go to shops to do their shopping often use self-service payment machines. This usually saves time as the shopper does not need to join a long queue. However, it can be frustrating when the machine has a problem and the sales assistant is not always available to help. On the other hand, not everyone has money to enjoy shopping. Shops usually have a security tag on their items to stop shoplifters from taking items without paying for them. The products with the highest value are more likely to be security tagged. A sales assistant will take off the security tag when the item is paid for by the customer. A customer should be careful when paying for goods. Some smaller shops may charge extra for credit card transactions so cash should be used to save money. Hence, shop wisely in order to get the best bargain. A For more than 1,000 years the use of tiger parts has been included in traditional Chinese medicine practices. B Once the pride of the nation, these majestic animals are now facing a major threat. C Malayan tigers are regarded as emblematic animals in Malaysia, yet they have fallen on hard times in the wild. D Hunting is the biggest cause of the decline of not just Malayan tigers but tigers worldwide. E Sometimes they are eaten by people, but mostly they are hunted by poachers who want to sell them, mainly for their fur and skin. F Their gorgeous orange eyes and big round paws and shimmering fur are just amazing. G However, the Malayan Tiger population has now declined to an official estimation of 250 – 340 which is the lowest it has been in the last 100 years. © Penerbit Mahir Sdn. Bhd. (183897-P) 34 English Form 5 Unit 6 A – Hennie, 30 years old Personally, I think that nobody was born a criminal. Every child comes to this world like an innocent angel, like a white sheet of paper, and it is we, adults, who are responsible for what is written on this paper. I feel that we defi nitely should give non-violent criminals some social work and – this is important – we have to give them the opportunity to get proper education and useful skills so they can fi nd a job and will have a chance to avoid committing crime again. B – Ehsan, 25 years old A reason not to put minor criminals in prison is that they may mix with more dangerous and violent criminals, potentially committing a worse crime when they are released. By keeping them in the community, helping others, they not only learn new skills, but they could also develop more empathy and care towards others. If this occurs, society can only benefi t. C – Whitney, 28 years old Personally, I think that community service could be a solution for minor criminals to serve his or her sentence and to give back to the community he or she lives in. However, it’s an undoubtedly delicate issue and I believe that politicians should pay particular attention to this problem and fi nd an appropriate answer. D – Catherine, 20 years old Burglary or possession of drugs, for example, does not involve violence against other people so the criminal does not present a direct danger to anyone in the community. Keeping these types of criminals in prison is expensive for the taxpayer and does not appear to be an eff ective punishment as they often commit the same crime again when they come out of prison. E – Vasanth, 24 years old The main purpose of prison is to deter not only the off ender but also potential off enders. Personally, a crime is a crime and there is no level to it whatsoever. This is because anyone who commits a socalled minor crime would be capable of committing a major one in future. F – Mazlan, 29 years old In my opinion, those who commit crimes that are harmful to other people should be imprisoned. Criminals are criminals and they have to be punished. I also believe punishments should reform the off enders so that they do not repeat the same off ence again. I believe that justice should be harsh in order to deter people from committing similar crimes and therefore, community service is less likely to have that eff ect. Matching and Information Transfer We interviewed six people on community service for criminals. Read the texts below and answer the questions that follow. 35 © Penerbit Mahir Sdn. Bhd. (183897-P) English Form 5 Unit 6 Questions 1 to 4 Which paragraph (A - F) describes the following responses from the people? Statement Paragraph 1 Justice should be severe in order to prevent people from committing similar crimes. 2 Being in prison with more vicious criminals might possibly make minor criminals commit a worse crime when they are out. 3 Keeping non-violent criminals in prison is ineffective and costly. 4 The key reason for sending criminals to prison is to frighten not only the offender but also potential offenders. Questions 5 to 8 Complete the notes below using information from the text. Choose no more than one word from the passage for each answer. Community Service • Sentencing serial offenders of minor offences to community service has proven to be a more (5) deterrent than sending them to prison. • • There is a provision in the Criminal Procedure Code which allows punishment through community services for (6) offences. On top of being a successful step to discourage (7) offenders, community service is able to solve the problem of overcrowding at prisons. • The benefits of providing a community service option include offering an opportunity for the offender to learn new (8) , gain some confidence and avoid damaging jail time. 65 © Penerbit Mahir Sdn. Bhd. (183897-P) English Form 5 Unit 11 Everything would run on remote machines and local computers task would rely just on connecting to those machines. A While cloud computing could change the entire computer industry, there are still some concerns about the security of the data stored on the remote machines. B Later developers created new applications to help users perform many things from word processing to image editing. C That’s a lot of data to manage and analyse, and not all in-house equipment can store it. D Textbooks have surprisingly out-paced the cost of almost every element involved in university level education including tuition fees. E Thus, instead of using a personal computer every time to run the application, the individual can now run the application from anywhere in the world. F It’s crucial that accounting firms have fast and reliable networking and data storage that strengthens their efficiency and their ability to communicate internally and with clients. G Cloud computing is the delivery of on-demand computing services typically over the Internet and on a pay-as-you-go basis. H English F5 (10-12)5th 8/2/23.indd 65 09/02/2023 10:33 AM
