Possessive nouns When a noun is singular, we show possession by adding an apostrophe followed by an s (’s). When a plural noun ends in s, we show possession by adding only an apostrophe (’). When a plural noun does not end in s, we show possession by adding an apostrophe followed by an s (’s). They tell us what colour, size or shape the nouns are. a red cap a big car a rectangular container When we use more than one adjective to describe a noun, we follow this order: size, shape, colour, material a small, round, yellow, plastic ball the big, square, green, wooden picture frame When we compare two people or things that are more or less equal, we use as + adjective + as. This car is as fast as that one. Suffian is as talented as his brother, Shukri. When we compare two unequal nouns, we add er to the adjectives followed by than (the comparative). This book is thicker than that one. My bag is smaller than yours. When we compare more than two nouns, we add the + est to the adjectives (the superlative). Haziq is the fastest runner in my class. My grandfather is the oldest of his siblings. Here is a list of comparisons for you to learn. A plural subject takes a plural verb. Subject-Verb Rule Examples A singular subject must have a singular verb. She reads one book every week. Mr Wong has three big dogs. A plural subject must have a plural verb. My classmates are friendly and helpful. They know how to cook well. If two subjects in a sentence are joined by and, use the plural form of the verb. Puan Nadia and her children go to Cameron Highlands often. My brother and I collect toy cars. When the subject is an uncountable noun, use a singular verb. The milk is sour. Sugar attracts ants. When a sentence begins with There, the verb agrees with the subject. The subject comes after the verb. There is a cockroach on the table. There are many people at the pool. Use a singular verb with these words: each, every, everyone, someone, something, anybody, anyone, no one, one of Every pupil has to have a calculator. Someone is crying next door. One of us helps out with the chores every day. Use singular verbs for singular collective nouns. A team of players is on the bus. There is a bunch of bananas on the counter. Use plural verbs for plural collective nouns. Two teams of players are on the bus. There are three bunches of bananas on the counter.

(762284-U) 40 Simple Present Tense UNIT 11 We use the simple present tense in the following situations: Use Examples To talk about habitual actions (actions that take place regularly) My grandfather walks in the park every morning. We have football practice once a week. To express universal truths January is the first month of the year. Cows moo and cats meow. To give instructions and directions First, slice the onions. Turn left at the first junction. To talk about things which are facts Mr Ram works in a hospital. I have three brothers. To talk about events in the future The train arrives at ten tomorrow. There is a quiz next week. To use with these verbs: see, hear, smell, notice, look, seem, appear, think, know, believe, feel, wish, like, hope I smell something burning. (✓) I am smelling something burning. (✗) We feel like having some coffee. (✓) We are feeling like having some coffee. (✗) With ‘there’ There is/There’s a ladybird on the leaf. There are/There’re books all over the floor. We usually use the simple present tense with these adverbs: always, often, usually, sometimes, seldom, never, every morning/afternoon/evening/night/day/week/ month/year.
