Created in 1940 when the Grand River Dam Authority
completed construction of Pensacola Dam, “Grand Lake” is the
fist in a chain of three lakes on the Grand River. It is also the
largest, with 46,500 surface acres of wide-open waters, a
highly developed shoreline and plenty of amenities for both
visitors and year-round lakeside residents. Grand Lake is also
one of the most popular bass fishing lakes in the region,
hosting numerous tournaments each year.

With miles and miles of scenic shoreline meandering along the
foothills of the Ozark Mountains, Grand Lake offers bustling
lakeside communities, plenty of peaceful, quite coves and a
beautiful landscape in the background no matter what time of
year you visit.

Pensacola Dam holds back the waters to create Grand Lake
with its 51 concrete arches stretching out for a mile across the
Grand River Valley. The dam is the largest, continuous multiple
arch dam in the world and is Oklahoma’s fist hydroelectric
facility. Built by Depression-era labor in the 1930s, the dam is
open to free tours, Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Located just a few miles down the river from Pensacola Dam,
Lake Hudson is entirely within the bounds of Mayes County.
Impounded with the completion of GRDA’s Robert S. Kerr/
Markham-Ferry Project in 1964, the lake is quite a bit smaller
than it’s “big sister” Grand Lake, but no less popular with
anglers.

With majestic bluff, secluded coves and rolling hills around the
water, Hudson boasts its own breathtaking scenery serving as
a backdrop for its 12,000 surface acres of water and 200 miles
of shoreline. Like Grand Lake, it is also a haven for migratory
fowl and wildlife year-round.

Nestled in the hills of eastern Oklahoma, Fort Gibson Lake
serves as the downstream unit of the three-lake system on the
Grand (Neosho) River. Like the other lakes of NE Oklahoma,
Fort Gibson offers a great getaway for outdoor activities with
225 miles of shoreline extending into Mayes, Wagoner and
Cherokee counties.

Fort Gibson Dam, which was built primarily for flood risk
management and hydroelectric power, also plays a role in the
development of the Arkansas River. Water stored during
periods of high flow assures adequate water is available for
year-round operation of the McCellan-Kerr Arkansas River
Navigation System.

Located on the Saline Creek arm of Lake Hudson, the W.R.
Holway Reservoir is also owned and managed by GRDA. It was
created in 1968 with GRDA’s completion of the Salina Pumped
Storage Project (SPSP) and a 200-foot earth and rock dam
across Chimney Rock Hollow. A 712-surface acre reservoir,
Holway actually sits on a rock bed, blasted out of the hills
approximately, 250-feet above Salina Creek and the SPSP
powerhouse.

Although gasoline engines are prohibited on the reservoir and
no swimming is allowed, its 21 miles of shoreline surround a
peaceful, scenic reservoir that is a popular destination for
canoe and kayak enthusiasts. Anglers also flock to Holway. A
one-time state record smallmouth bass - 8-plus pounds - was
caught on the reservoir in March 2005.
