I am writing a picture book to explain Modern Georgia
to a fourth grade student, because fourth graders
study Georgia History too!
I will talk about things to do with Georgia’s politics, and
economics.
I will discuss and focus on important people, and major
events.

How did mayor Maynard Jackson improve the city of Atlanta and
impact the state of Georgia politically, socially, and economically?
Maynard Jackson was Georgia’s first black
mayor, in which he served 3 terms.
In 1973 Jackson won the mayoral election
because he got 60% of the vote.
He helped improve Racial equality In the City
by hiring more black police officers and
ensuring that minority contractors got more
City businesses.
He also completed the new terminal at the
Hartsfield International Airport
How did mayor Andrew Young improve the city of Atlanta and impact
the state of Georgia politically, socially, and economically?
Andrew Young served in Georgia as a
congressman, National Ambassador, and
mayor of Atlanta.
He helped organize voter registration and
desegregation campaigns.
He became the first African American to be
elected since reconstruction in 1972.
He was named ambassador to the United
Nations by Jimmy Carter.
His career brought the Olympics to Atlanta in
Georgia.
What impact did Jimmy Carter have as a state senator, Governor,
President a Past President?
James Earl “Jimmy” Carter was a state senator, governor
and the only person from Georgia to be elected president.
As a state senator Carter advocated for education and
served as the chairman for the Senate education committee.
As Governor Carter is most well-known for his
reorganization of state government and his consolidation of
state agencies.
Jimmy Carter helped with monitoring elections, resolving
conflicts, and treating diseases.
He helped with educational Justice, mental health systems,
women and minorities in government positions.
What was the positive and negative impact that the 1996 Olympics had
on Georgia in regards to its short-term and long-term economic growth
and population growth?
Atlanta was chosen as the 1996 Olympic Games host.
The Olympic Games brought removal of Urban Decay,
city growth, and International name recognition.
Atlanta developed to prepare for the Olympic Games
by building new or adding to existing sports venues,
repairing its sidewalks, building public parks, adding
more hotel rooms, and Revitalizing the downtown area
with new homes and apartments.
Olympic Games brought 5.1 billion dollars to Georgia.
Increased population, along with the recent recession,
has led to a declining housing market and increased
traffic concerns.
How has Georgia positively impacted the economy both nationally and
globally?
During the 1970s many International businesses began
moving to Georgia, and it was all part of globalization (as it
increased so did Georgia's economy.)
Georgia is home to many different Industries including
Aerospace, defense contractors, and huge farms.
Georgia has totaled $1.75 billion since 1995, because of
trade.
Tourism is a big business in Georgia and is the fifth largest
industry in the state’ representing 10.3% of all of the states
Workforce.
Many film and TV production companies come to Georgia
because of financial incentives offered by the state
Explain the government of Georgia's response to Brown v. Board of
Education including the 1956 flag and the Sibley Commission.
The Brown vs Board of Education case was a case to stop
integration in schools.
By 1960 Federal mandates were strongly encouraging
Georgia to desegregate and Governor Ernest vandiver asked
the citizens of the state to render their input regarding the
controversy via the Sibley Commission.
After the session 60% of Georgians claimed that they were
rather close the public schools than to integrate.
To show the dislike to Supreme Court decisions such as
Brown versus the Board of Education in 1956 Georgia
legislators voted to change the state flag to incorporate the
Confederate Battle Flag.
Martin Luther King, Jr
Dr. Martin Luther King jr. Is the most well-known Georgian
for his tireless leadership in the Civil Rights Movement.
His work and his commitment to nonviolent protests, won
him the Nobel Peace Prize and led to the national holiday
created in his honor.
He served as the spokesperson for the successful
Montgomery Bus Boycott.
He created the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
Martin Luther King, Jr was instrumental in ending
segregation and changing Americans views on race of racial
equality
John Lewis
US Representative John Lewis became an
integral part of Georgia's history through his
leadership in the Civil Rights Movement.
He was active in the 1960s sit-ins to protest
Jim Crow laws.
Lewis also participated in the freedom rides of
the early 1960s.
He became the chair of the new organization
the Student Nonviolent Coordinating
Committee.
SNCC
The Student Nonviolent Coordinating
Committee is an organization of young
college students focused to civil rights
change.
John Lewis was the the leader of SNCC.
It was a major civil rights organization in the
1960's.
They became known for sit-ins, freedom
rides, and the "freedom summer"
This group was successful in helping African
Americans gain several General Assembly
seats in the reapportionment election.
SCLC
The Southern Christian Leadership
Conference was created in reaction to the
Montgomery Bus Boycott.
It was led by Martin Luther king, Jr.
They filed class-action lawsuits against the
federal government for segregation.
They planned rallies, marches, and boycotts
to end these scenarios.
The SCLC today focuses on causes such as
healthcare, prison reform, fair treatment of
refugees, and job site safety.
Albany Movement
After the success of the Montgomery Bus Boycott
in 1955, civil rights leaders in other Southern cities
sought to challenge segregation laws.
Members of SNCC and the local community began
to protest the segregationist policies of the city.
Massive resistance from whites and the police
department, led to over 500 protesters landing in
jail.
Many of Albanese black middle-class did not
initially support the protests.
This was called the Albany Movement and it is
considered a failure
March on Washington
The March on Washington was an activity
where civil rights activists gathered in
Washington DC to promote their cause and
push for civil rights legislation.
During the march on Washington for jobs and
freedom, Martin Luther King jr. Gave the “I
Have a Dream” speech.
The March on Washington encouraged the
passage of Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and the
Voting Rights Act of 1965, and made King the
most well-known spokesperson of the Civil
Rights Movement.
Civil rights movement
The Civil Rights Movement was a variety of activism that
sought to secure full political, social, and economic rights
for African Americans in the period from 1946 to 1968.
The efforts of civil rights activists resulted in many
victories, but also failures, and the oppositions of white
supremacists.
Despite the abolition of slavery and legal gains for
African Americans, racial segregation known as Jim
Crow arose in the South.
Jim Crow segregation meant that Southern blacks
would continue to live in conditions of poverty and
inequality, with white supremacists denying them their
hard-won political rights and freedoms.
Explain the resistance to the 1964 Civil Rights Act, emphasizing the role of
Lester Maddox.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964, ended segregation in public
places and banned employment discrimination.
This bill was signed into law by President Lyndon B
Johnson.
Without violence most Southerners accepted the
controversial passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Lester Maddox opened the pickrick cafeteria near the
campus of Georgia Tech which he only opened to White
customers and he refused to serve African-Americans
and anyone who suggested integration.
