reduce emissions increase fuel efficiency keep DPFs clean

Air quality, especially in cities, is one of the great challenges of our time.
You can’t open a newspaper without reading about vehicle emissions.
But what if there was a technology that could provide a practical and
low cost solution?

cgon – curing the world’s emission problems

CGON manufacture a range of hydrogen fuel additive systems designed to reduce
emissions, increase fuel efficiency and keep diesel particulate filters clean.
It’s the technology the world has been waiting for, and with so many possible
applications, the benefits are clear – not just for the environment, but also for
your bottom line.

the technology

Developed over the last eight years at our research and development facility in the United Kingdom,
CGON have created a product that when fitted to any fossil fuelled engine (petrol, diesel, LPG)
significantly reduces the production of all emissions CO, HC, NOx, PM and PN.
But that isn’t the whole story…
As a result of creating a more efficient combustion cycle, the fuel is burnt more completely, resulting
in an increase in engine efficiency and greater MPG.
The much cleaner emissions also put less stress on a vehicle’s diesel particulate filter resulting in
reduced maintenance and downtime.

The result is a product that could literally change the
air we breathe, improve air quality on a global scale
and save thousands of lives every year.

the science

Hydrogen fuel cells are nothing new. In fact, they were
invented in 1932 by Francis Bacon. Many companies have
previously tried to get them to work in the automotive sector,
without any success.

Previous attempts
Current products, which are still on the market, use stainless steel plates in a strong hydroxide solution
to create the reaction, when a current is passed through the plates the resulting reaction produces
hydrogen. However the current required in these systems to get the reaction to take place is significant
– 30 amps and higher – making it unsuitable for the automotive sector.
A second and more worrying problem, is that the chemical reaction which takes place in these systems,
produces a toxic bi-product called Hexavalent Chromium which is highly toxic and banned globally.
The third and final problem is that the stainless steel plates corrode over a relatively short time and their
ability to produce hydrogen is significantly reduced.

6

the cgon solution

Through extensive testing at our research and development facility
we discovered the correct chemistry to efficiently create hydrogen.
And not just any hydrogen, but the more powerful ortho hydrogen,
literally on demand.
The breakthrough came by selecting the correct materials for the cathode
and the anode that would generate enough hydrogen at an extremely low
current with no hazardous bi-products.
We made this breakthrough in 2009 and our international patent is pending.

Now CGON’s hydrogen-on-demand systems generate
powerful ortho hydrogen using just two amps of current –
perfect for automotive applications, in sufficient quantities
and with no harmful bi-products.

why add hydrogen to the combustion process?

Hydrogen is the simplest and lightest element in the periodic table and, as such, is able to migrate into

the gaps of other molecules, in this case, fuel. Because of this, combustion is enhanced as it’s spread

more promptly and completely than

would otherwise be possible.

mixture.

CGON’s units, combustion is enhanced

when hydrogen atoms migrate between

the fuel molecules. This means that nearly all of the fuel is burnt and fewer emissions or particulates are

expelled into the air. This is because the hydrogen produced isn’t ordinary hydrogen, it’s ortho-hydrogen

and this is created by getting the balance of electrolyte, the metals used in the cell and the current used

to create the reaction, just right.

A guide to pollutants

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) – A non-toxic gas, which has a negative contribution towards the environment.
A global problem where governments around the world are continuously pursuing policies to reduce
CO2 emissions.
Carbon Monoxide (CO) – Produced from an incomplete combustion process of fuel. This gas is
hazardous to health; it reduces the ability of blood to carry oxygen, causes headaches, respiratory
problems and at high concentration; death.
Hydrocarbons (HC) – HCs are emitted from the exhaust as unburnt fuel and as evaporation from the fuel
tank and nozzle at the point of filling up. HCs reacts with Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) in sunlight which
produces photochemical oxidants and low level Ozone, causing breathing problems and increased
symptoms in those with asthma.
Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) – NOx emissions are produced in the combustion process. HCs reacts with
NOx in sunlight which produces low level Ozone; this can cause inflammation to the airways reducing
lung function which can trigger asthma and contributes to the formation of PM and PN (fine and
ultra-fine particulates).
Particulate Matter (PM) – This is partially burnt fuel where molecules are formed by the reaction to the
other pollutant gases. These small particles that make their way into deep tissue, causing respiratory
and cardiovascular complaints.
Particulate Number (PN) – Just like PMs, Particulate Number is a partially burnt fuel where the
molecules are so small they can only be seen under a powerful microscope. The molecules make their
way into the body through the skin causing irregular heartbeats, non-fatal heart attacks, decreased lung
function and increased respiratory symptoms and even premature death in some cases.

the products

CGON produce 3 different variants of the ezero range, each with different applications in mind from
the ezero1 aimed at smaller engines, with the ezeroH1 targeted at larger vehicles such as small coaches
and light goods vehicles in the 7.5 tonne range, all the way up to our ezeroH2 model for the HGV and
bus market.
Each system comprises a tank with internal electronics control and a separate driver notification unit that
keeps a check on the cell’s performance.
The size of unit required depends on the amount of hydrogen required for the application.

fitting the system

Typical fitting times vary from vehicle to vehicle but should
take no longer than three hours.

At every fit you will be presented
with a before and after emissions
certificate showing how much
your vehicle’s emissions have been
reduced by.

Once commissioned, the system works immediately to
reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency. There is no
bedding in period, if you choose to retest your emissions
you will see that over time the engine become cleaner and
less polluting.

12

A typical example would be an emissions reduction of 67% when the system
is first commissioned, rising to 80% when retested a month later; the system
has a cleaning effect on the engine.

13

the proof

We often hear that our product is too good to be true! And people
constantly ask why it’s not already fitted to every car as standard.

We believe one day it will be, but getting products incorporated on a new car takes years… and we wouldn’t
expect you to take our word for it, so we’ve had our system independently tested and verified by Emissions
Analytics in real world conditions, and the results speak for themselves.

Real World tests vs Lab Testing
Since the VW Emissions Scandal, there has been much controversy over how emissions are measured and the
accuracy of the manufacturer’s economy figures. From September 2017, engine manufacturers will have to carry
out Real World Tests which will stop manufacturers massaging figures obtained in lab conditions.
Lab tests or New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) Tests involves testing emissions and fuel economy in a lab,
with none of the real conditions that would be experienced when driving such as load, weather, road surface
driving style etc. Manufacturers have so far been able to self-certify and publish figures which ‘optimise’
economy figures and quote emissions far below those that would be achieved in the real world.
Real World Tests (RWT) are carried out using a Portable Emissions Monitoring System (PEMS) machine on cars
driven on the road as they would be in everyday driving conditions. You can see hundreds of test that have
been carried out by Emissions Analytics on their EQUA Index www.equaindex.com which show the difference
between what the manufacturers quote and what a RWT has shown. It was using this type of machine that
exposed the VW Scandal.

Last year we installed the ezero1 on the brand new
Euro 6 engine in the 2000cc Jaguar XF; reportedly their
cleanest engine ever. After carrying out EA’s real world
tests, we were still able to show a significant difference
in the reduction of the CO, NOx and PN.

current and future applications

Our products can be used in conjunction with petrol, diesel and LPG and in almost every internal
combustion engine. From the standard transport applications, HGV, PSV, LCV and passenger cars.
However, there are lots of other applications such as generators in the mining industry, fork lift
trucks, generators, boat engines and many more.
Our development teams are constantly working on improving our existing product range and
developing products for markets not yet covered.
In the near future we’ll have applications for
the rail and ship markets, alongside projects
already planned and in development for
the construction and remote generator
market place.
