As the Vice President of Leo Club of Raththanapitiya , I am excited to share my thoughts in our third newsletter filled with Christmas joy and New Year hopes! Being a part of the 15-year-old Legacy of Leo Club of Raththanapitiya is a great honor, which I am grateful for this amazing opportunity. We all have different reasons to join Leo movement. Mine is simply to do something for others. After joining the Leo movement in 2021, I got the opportunity to discover a new side of myself. I was lucky to participate for many projects and also got the opportunity to organize projects as a project Coordinating Director of Leo Club of University of Sri Jayewardenepura. I can give some examples from my Leo journey. Interestingly, although I have a long contact list of debaters and lawyers, I've never participated in any debates but I was able to organize a Debate tournament after joining the Leo movement. Project Loom was also a novel expereince as we were able to organize a beauty pageant, aiming to help young girls identify their capabilities. All these initiatives happened thanks for the Leo movement. So as the Vice President of Leo Club of Raththanapitiya, what I wanted to share among my Leos is that, don’t be afraid to grab new opportunities, it will add new experience to life and that's how you grow into a leader. We all have the potential to make it happen. Our La-Rivista team is doing an incredible job, bringing a unique approach to uplift the quality of our newsletter. I know my Leos have tremendous capacity, and let's strive for even more. May the spirit of Christmas kickstart the New year! Thought of The Month CHRISTMAS BLISS So the bottom line is, Christmas is about finding your hope for your life once again, after missing it while fighting with life. It reminds you that even when this life has given you the worst experiences, you still got strength, you still got happiness. Make it count while you’re with your loved ones at the moment. During this too small time on earth, be thankful to those who bring you peace, cherish them. Help those in need. Eat well and eat happy. Share your joy with someone else. This way, you will never ever feel lost or forgotten. And even if you do, you will always come back to the truth, you are blessed! By Leo Gayanjalee De Silva After eleven long months of busyness, competition, commitment and restlessness, December is the month that arrives with ease and comfort. It’s the time we slow down after months, looking for a stillness. With the cold breeze of December, nature itself brings the charm of the season, CHRISTMAS! La Rivista December Edition is presented to you with the aura of Christmas, making all of us rememberthe true meaning of Christmas, its beauty and life. One after another year, the world always changes its tune. But the spirit of Christmas never does change. Because no matter what happens around us, the birth of Jesus, how he came to the world to give hope, love and joy is always good news. The message of Christmas is timeless. Christmas brings joy to everyone regardless of their religion which is well evident by the way both Christians and nonbelievers merrily celebrate Christmas traditions. The message of Christmas is more than just the birth of god’s son. The nativity story explains how his humble birth was taken place in a simple place, how he was grown up among people facing the same circumstances in life just as every human convincing everyone that “God is with us” . Christmas day, 25th December signifies the birth of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe is the son of God. The struggles we face, tragedies we encounter are endless throughout our lives. World is like that. Itis an eventful ride with thousand different emotions.

PROJECT coast 2.0 Wellawaththa Beach in Colombo saw a powerful wave of change as passionate volunteers from diverse organizations, includingthe Leo Clubof Raththanapitiya, AIESEC in NSBM, the Center for Beach Cleanups, and Altrium, joined forces for Project Coast 2.0. With a shared commitment to Sustainable Development Goals 14 and 13, we aimed to make a positive impact on the environment. The day started with energetic volunteers actively collecting waste, but what made this initiative unique was the creative approach. We sorted waste into categories according to the recycling possibilities. It was more than just a cleanup, it was a devoted effort towardsenvironmental sustainability. As the day progressed, a Municipal Council garbage truck arrived to collect the sortedgarbage, highlighting the importance of responsible waste disposal. This emphasizedthemessage that every piece matters and each action contributes to a cleaner environment. Project Coast 2.0transcendeda simple cleanup and it was a collaborative symphony, showcasing what happens when organizations unite for a common vision. It wasn't just about restoring the beach and also about crafting a story of a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable world. The promise of a better tomorrow resonates in the footsteps left on Wellawaththa Beach by those who caredenoughtotakeaction. By Leo Maheesha Sandamini

In a symphony of shared smiles, Leo Club of Raththanapitiya painted the confines of Welikada prison with a vibrant splash of kindness with its project ‘Spreading Smiles’. Phase 1 of ‘Spreading Smiles’ held on 3rd of September 2023 at Disala Children's Home, laid the foundation to this. Phase one was carried out with a sponsorship and Leos were involved in donating essential foods and other necessities to the children. Through that, Leos were able to raise volunteerism and community service among its members while also enhancing the quality of life of the little hearts residing at Disala Children’s Home. The second phase of this initiative, held on 10th of December 2023, reached out to a group of often forgotten, innocent children whose lives are marked by constraints and separation from the world beyond. Collaborating with the Chemistry Society of University of Sri Jayewardenepura, the young Leos stepped in to provide them essential items with care and compassion. As mentioned by the prison officers, these precious children scarcely get the chance to gaze upon the night sky. Hence, 'Spreading Smiles' aimed not just to provide material aid but also to remind these children that there's a world outside the prison walls, waiting to embrace them with warmth and care. We faced numerous challenges along the way, such as collecting donations and arranging the program in the prison environment. However, our determination to reach these children has been able to propel us forward. That gives us the profound message that even in challenging circumstances, kindness can create ripples of hope. The "Spreading Smiles" project stands as a testament to this belief, inspiring us all to look beyond boundaries and seek opportunities to make a difference, one smile at a time. Today, I invite you to reflect upon the idea that every woman is a leader in her own unique way. Leadership transcends titles and positions; it is a quality that resides within each individual, and women, in particular, exemplify diverse and impactful forms of leadership. First and foremost, women showcase leadership through their resilience. In the face of challenges and setbacks, women persistently navigate the complexities of life, displaying a tenacity that serves as an inspiration to others. Their ability to rise above adversity is a testament to a silent yet powerful form of leadership. Moreover, women often lead with empathy and compassion. This empathetic leadership style fosters understanding and unity, creating environments where individuals feel heard and supported. The capacity to connect on a deeper emotional level is a hallmark of effective leadership, and many women naturally embody this trait. In various spheres, women emerge as trailblazers, breaking barriers and shattering glass ceilings. Their courage to challenge norms and pave new paths demonstrates a bold and visionary leadership that propels both individuals and societies forward. Every woman who defies expectations becomes a beacon of inspiration for others to follow. Furthermore, women excel in collaborative leadership. Whether it's in the workplace, community, or family, women often prioritize collaboration, seeking to build consensus and bring people together. BEWITCHING HER This inclusive approach fosters collective growth and development, emphasizing the notion that leadership is not about standing alone but about uplifting others . Let us recognize that leadership is not confined to traditional roles but permeates every aspect of a woman's life. By Leo Thenuri Perera Leo Club of Kesbewa The intricate interplay between human beings, their environment, and the legal framework that governs their interactions forms the foundation of a sustainable and just society. This trinity is at the heart of a delicate balance that, when nurtured, leads to the flourishing of both the natural world and human civilization. This article explores the dynamic relationship between human beings, their environment, and the law, emphasizing the imperative of preserving this equilibrium for the well-being of current and future generations. Human beings are an integral part of the environment, intricately linked to the ecosystems that sustain all life on Earth. Our actions have profound consequences on the delicate balance of nature. From the air we breathe to the food we consume, every aspect of our existence is intricately connected to the environment. Recognizing this interdependence is essential for fostering a sense of responsibility towards our naturalsurroundings. Environmental law is an up-and-coming area of law in an age of concern over the ‘footprint’ humans are leaving on our planet. It covers diverse areas such as climate control, sources of energy, pollution and Corporate Social Responsibility. Human beings are an integral part of the environment, intricately linked to the ecosystems that sustain all life on Earth. Our actions have profound consequences on the delicate balance of nature. From the air we breathe to the food we consume, every aspect of our existence is intricately connected to the environment. Recognizing this interdependence is essential for fostering a sense of responsibility towards our natural surroundings. "Some old-fashioned things like fresh air and sunshine are hard to beat." – Laura Ingalls Wilder Harmony of Human Beings, Environment and Law

Moreover, international agreements and treaties play a crucial role in addressing global environmental challenges. Treaties like the Paris Agreement on climate change and the Convention on Biological Diversity set benchmarks for collective action and cooperation on a global scale. They underscore the recognition that environmental issues transcend borders and require collaborative efforts to find sustainable solutions. Moreover, environmental law serves as a safeguard against environmental discrimination. It holds industries and entities accountable for their actions, preventing the exploitation of vulnerable communities and safeguarding their right to a healthy environment. Law serves as the cornerstone of environmental protection. It provides the structure and framework for regulating human conduct with regards to the environment. Environmental laws establish guidelines for resource management, pollution control, conservation efforts, and land use planning. These legal instruments are essential in curbing destructive practices and promoting responsible stewardship of natural resources. The relationship between human beings, their environment, and the law is not only about preserving ecosystems, but also about upholding fundamental human rights. Access to clean air, water, and a healthy environment is intrinsic to the dignity and well-being of every individual. Environmental justice seeks to ensure that marginalized communities, often disproportionately affected by environmental degradation, have equal access to these basic rights. The harmonious coexistence of human beings, their environment, and the law is indispensable for the well-being of present and future generations. As stewards of the Earth, it is our collective responsibility to safeguard the ecosystems that sustain us. Environmental laws provide the necessary tools and guidelines to navigate this relationship, ensuring that progress and development are pursued in a manner that respects the limits of our planet. To achieve a sustainable future, it is imperative that individuals, communities, and governments work in tandem to implement and enforce environmental policies. Through education, advocacy, and responsible decisionmaking, we can forge a path towards a balanced and thriving coexistence with the natural world. By upholding the principles of respect, responsibility, and justice, we can build a legacy of harmony that transcends generations.

NEUROMORPHIC COMPUTING Neuromorphic computing also known as BrainInspired Computing, is a groundbreaking innovation in the field of computer science. The word Neuromorphic is derived from the 2 words of “neuro” (neurons) and “morphic” (structure). This is approach to the computing which is inspired by the structure and the function of human brain. Thus, it creates a computer system that replicates a parallel processing capability to a human brain. Concept of neuromorphic computing can be traced back to 1940’s, where the Alan Turing wrote the book of “Intelligent Machinery”. However, this was published after his death in 1968. In late 1980’s, Carver Mead proposed the first application of neuromorphic computing and since then it has evolved while taking inspirations to design artificial neural systems such as visions systems, head-eye systems, auditory processors etc.… Key intended uses of this technology includes pattern recognition, machine learning and cognitive computing and also excel in tasks requiring adaptations and learnings which make this very useful for edge computing and Internet of Things devices. Integrating systems with the use of neuromorphic computing will results in huge advancements in various fields including Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Systems and many more. Neuromorphic computing has a diversified range of applications is the fields of scientific research, biomedical engineering, environmental monitoring, autonomous vehicles and also robotics are few of those applications. Main advantage of the use of neuromorphic computing is the high energy efficiency while performing complex computations. Also, real time processing of the data, high tolerance to failures and the ability to accommodate complex applications are few of the main advantages of neuromorphic computing than traditional computing. Future of neuromorphic computing is full of opportunities and has the potential to revolutionize the computing industry. It’s expected to allow integrated circuits to perform “compute in memory” with more than thousand to million times improved power consumptions. Market for neuromorphic computing, is expected to grow from $0.2 billion in 2025 to $22 billion in 2035. However, there are few challengers in materials, devices, circuits, algorithms and applications which are now been the focusing areas to ensure the high growth in neuromorphic computing. By Leo Chathuri Navodi Train To Busan – A Thrilling Ride Through Humanity’s Darkest Hours Train to Busan, directed by Yeon Sang-ho, is a masterpiece of Korean cinema and is a must watch for any fan of zombie movies. The movie centers on a group of passengers traveling from Seoul to Busan by train. The group finds themselves stranded on a speeding train as a deadly epidemic ravages South Korea, and they must fight the hordes of infected individuals in order to survive. Yeon does an excellent job of capturing the claustrophobic vibe of the train, and the audience is kept on the edge of their seats by the continual dread of zombies. The characters are engaging and have depth. We desire them to be alive since we care about them. The movie becomes much more emotionally compelling as a consequence of this. While Train to Busan enthralls with its thrilling zombie action, its true brilliance lies beneath the surface. In the face of unimaginable terror, it delves into the depths of human nature. We see a broad spectrum of human behavior through the passengers' desperate struggle for survival. Train to Busan creates a vivid and profound picture of humanity's darkest moments. From the selflessness of a father protecting his daughter to the desperate struggles of ordinary people fighting for their lives, Train to Busan paints a complex and unforgettable portrait of humanity's darkest hours. The film forces us to confront the uncomfortable questions including how far would we go to keep our loved ones and ourselves safe? What decisions would we make in such a dire situation? Would we give in to ego and fear, or would we be able to overcome it and draw strength from our shared humanity? Train to Busan examines these complex themes, going beyond the boundaries of a simple zombie movie. It becomes a powerful commentary on the human condition, offering a captivating reflection on our capacity for both darkness and light, courage, and cowardice. This depth and complexity are what truly set the film apart, making it a must-watch not just for thriller fans, but for anyone seeking a thoughtprovoking and emotionally charged cinematic experience.
