MENTOR & MENTEE PROGRAM 33

Mentoring is a structured relationship program where a student
(mentee) receives professional guidance and support from their mentor
(academician). Successful mentoring and partnerships are built on mu-
tual respect, professionalism, openness and an equal commitment to
the relationship between mentor and mentee.
While the mentoring programs are structured , they are also flexible
and it is up to each individual mentor/mentee to decide on the format,
frequency and formality of the mentoring relationship.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
All participants are expected to:
 Read program guidelines, rules and attend any required meeting

session.
 Meet at least 2 times in a semester.
 Agree on a mentoring schedule and objectives.
 Attend meetings and follow up with action items.
 Respond to communications in timely manner.
 Participate in required evaluations and provide feedback.
ROLES OF MENTORS
 Motivate, inspire and encourage mentees to achieve their goals.
 Help mentees to find their own solutions to problems.
 Encourage mentees to build confidence in themselves, their choices

and abilities.
 Guide and advice them on their academic matters.
ROLES OF MENTEES
 Lead the mentoring relationship and expected to be prepared and

engaged to the mentor/mentee program.
 Reflect on mentoring objectives prior to meeting their mentor.
 Come prepared for meeting and are proactive and engaged.
 Are open for feedback and receptive to listening and learning from

their mentor
 Keep safe their mentor mentee book and bring during the meeting.
 Open for feedback and open to sharing their careers goals, study

matters.
