Milestone Idea Card
‘I understand there are things I should not
touch or eat’
A good way to get children talking about safety is to fill a
bag with props, such as medication, sunscreen,
household cleaning products and supervise them with
these items at all times.
Take each object out one at a time for discussion.
You might ask questions like:
“What is this?”
"Why do we need this?"
"How does it help us?"
"What can we do with this object to keep us safe?"
It's important for children to know that they should not
take medicine on their own and if they are ill only a
parent or adult/carer may give medication to make them
feel better. If they know these items are dangerous they
know not touch them.
Create a picture together that shares the message that
these items are dangerous, you could display on the
inside of the cupboard where these items are safely
stored out of reach of children, as a reminder to
everyone to keep safe.
