Small Tools

Small Tools

Milestone Idea Card

‘I can use small tools effectively’

Here are some ideas to help build your child’s fine
motor skills and work effectively with small tools.

Using scissors can be very tricky for little hands. Set your
child a challenge of cutting out different patterns that

you have drawn for them.
Encouraging your child to ‘snap’ with the scissors and try

to follow the line.
If you have tubes from kitchen roll or toilet rolls you can
make them into little people, by letting your child cut the

top and make funky hair styles.

Another way is to allow your child to use tweezers or
kitchen tongs and move small objects from one bowl to

the next.

You can use things like pom-pom balls, bottle tops and
pasta pieces.

Other ideas to get their little fingers moving you can do
painting with cotton buds rather than a paint brush,
making necklaces (if you don’t have beads you can use

penne pasta), treading cheerios’ onto spaghetti pieces or
making pictures with stickers.
Enjoy!
