[SABAH H.I.P MATTERS] Celebrating Inspirations from Schools 44 Impact: This project established our relationship with the organiser as our outreach H.I.P activity. It helped our pupils to gain new knowledge about the current worldwide environmental issues. The pupils were also encouraged to explore the gadgets on air monitoring systems as well as on how to collect data about air quality around the school and learning ways to manage waste for sustainable environment. It was observable that pupils who participated in this project were being more confident to communicate in English as they needed that language to function in the project. All in all, the project has provided a meaningful platform for the pupils to learn English incidentally. Way Forward: We were lucky as we were one of the chosen schools for this project. Otherwise, the cost involved in the experiments and activities would be unaffordable for us to bear. We are looking forward to conducting more activities once the device has been installed. Besides, we could gradually expand this project by involving more pupils in building a more immersive English usage environment. [SABAH H.I.P MATTERS] Celebrating Inspirations from Schools 46 Do Good Project Andi Mohd Syahmi Afiq & Adibah E.Arim Sasi (SK Holy Trinity, Tawau) Pillar of H.I.P Activity: Out-of-class & Outreach Participants: 756 pupils from Year 1-6 Objectives: ● To encourage pupils to use English in a fun and engaging way. ● To boost pupils’ confidence to use English in an authentic situation. ● To instill co-operation and mutual help among pupils. ● Appreciate the environment. ● To apply the concept of earning, saving, spending and donation. Description of Activity: A pupil of SK Holy Trinity, Mohamad Zulzaireeza, won the Third place in a National Cha-ching competition held by Prudence Malaysia. He was awarded RM300 to start a project at school. With that fund, Mohamad Zulzaireeza came up with an idea to involve the whole school to carry out “Do Good Project”. Do Good Project aimed to instill co-operation and mutual help among pupils, appreciate the environment and understand the concept of earn, save, spend and donate. It was conducted for one month from 18 April 2022 to 18 May 2022. The English, Islamic and Science panels collaborate to conduct activities including a donation drive, selling Ramadan goodies for RM2 each, selling bookmarks for RM0.50 each and Paper Recycling project (collect and sell). During the launching of Do Good Project, pupils participated in activities such as being the Master of The Ceremony, choir, recycling trivia, poem recitation, and speech competition. All these activities were conducted in English language. Other than that, throughout the process of selling the Ramadan goodies and bookmarks, the pupils were conversing in English language. The parents who came and bought the bookmarks were also encouraged to speak in English. Besides, every teacher communicated in English even they were not English teachers as to be a role model in creating an immersive speaking environment. Accordingly, this project allowed a highly rich Englishspeaking environment to be developed for the pupils. In such environment, the pupils involved started to attempt using the language in a meaningful way.

[SABAH H.I.P MATTERS] Celebrating Inspirations from Schools 47 Impact: During the project, not only Mohamad Zulzaireeza was involved but the whole school including the parents. They were extremely supportive. Many pupils were volunteering to help with the making and selling of bookmarks and goodies. A total of 270 packages of goodies and 105 bookmarks were sold. Parents and pupils helped to bring in loads of recyclable papers. We managed to gather 218 kg of papers that were sold for RM82. Pupils and parents of different backgrounds chipped in with the donations. Class and English Teachers did their part in encouraging pupils to donate to the project. ‘What you give, you get back’ in a positive sense. RM1900 was donated for the ‘Sambutan Ihya Ramadan & Ambang Aidilfitri, Bakul Kasih Ramadan’ project. Besides that, deserving families were assisted. On the last day of school before Aidilfitri holidays, every pupil in the school was given Raya money (teachers’ donation) and goodies (Do Good Project money). It was truly a month of charity and giving. Other than that, this programme impacted the proficiency of the pupils through increased exposure to English language. The pupils, teachers as well as the parents used English as the medium of communication throughout the programme. Way Forward : The Headmaster decided to continue Do Good Project in the future. Fund obtained could be used to help those in need in the future. On top of that, the positive acceptance towards the importance of learning and mastering English through this project has increased overall proficiency of the English Language among the pupils, teachers, as well as parents. This programme can be implemented for longer duration with additional activities such as role play and drama under the same theme. Appendix:

[SABAH H.I.P MATTERS] Celebrating Inspirations from Schools 49 WOW (Wheel of Wisdom) Dk Emas Rudziah Pg Mohammad (SK Sacred Heart Kota Kinabalu (M)) Pillar of H.I.P Activity : In-class & Out-of-class. Participants: 552 pupils. 40 teachers, 100 parents and 50 local community. Objectives: • To expose the students to the differences between American and British English. • To enhance the interest of students on the use of the English Language through the elements of games in teaching and learning process outside the classroom environment. • To create a teaching aid that can be utilized by teachers in their teaching and learning process that is suitable to their learning objectives. Description of Activity: WOW is a spinning wheel with four playing zones based on the differences between American and British English. The WOW project was undertaken to expose students to the differences between the American and British English through information which is in the form of infographic and the application of fun game element outside the classroom environment. In addition, this project can also be used as a teaching aid tool for the teachers of SRK Sacred Heart. The teachers can use the spinning wheel to apply the learning content and objective in line with the creativity of the teachers in producing a fun lesson to the students. Besides, WOW incorporated QR Code application as to fulfil the aims of TS25 programme that emphasises the use of technology in the teaching and learning process. The use of QR code enabled the students to access quizzes, information and games via online after scanning the QR code. WOW was also displayed at the H.I.P corner as it could stimulate students to be interested in learning the English Language outside the formal classroom environment. Moreover, with its presence, the H.I.P corner was given a breath of fresh air. The H.I.P corner in SRK Sacred Heart is unique as it combines the contribution of the various panels. Accordingly, other panels benefited by incorporating the WOW project in their own lessons through using the QR codes and quizzes respectively. Impact: This project was on-going throughout the year. To date, observations suggested it had impacted many parties, especially the students. This project facilitated online learning through the QR code and made it an easy access for the teachers to monitor the students work from the google

[SABAH H.I.P MATTERS] Celebrating Inspirations from Schools 50 form. Not only it made learning fun, it also made teaching more fun and easier. Subsequently, it boosted the usage of English language across different subjects. The fun yet educational element of WOW sustained the learning motivation of students. As from the oral feedback shared by the students, they were excited to attempt the task and they learnt the differences between British and American English even they made mistakes. Overall, based on the feedback collected through Google Form, the students asked to have more quizzes as to help them to master the differences. Way Forward: I intend to extend and continue this project by making it a toolkit for all the classes and to share it to schools around Kota Kinabalu. However, there would be a slight change on its quizzes and infographic. The next focus would be a collaborative effort with Evoworld as my outreach partner. The topic would be on Ecosystems and Sustainability. Besides providing ideas on the content, Evoworld could provide a wide range of materials and alternatives to single-use plastic items, from biodegradable, compostable and to edible. Using the WOW project as the base and expand it to a bigger project which turns into a rethink campaign. Appendix :

[SABAH H.I.P MATTERS] Celebrating Inspirations from Schools 52 ENGLISH FUN WEEK & H.I.P WITH THE COMMUNITY Chrispin Adrian Cyrillus. (SK Bangkalalak, Beaufort) Pillar of H.I.P Activity: Out-of-Class / Outreach HIP Activity. Participants: A School-Head, 12 teachers, 122 pupils, 56 parents, 6 NGO. Objectives: • To showcase pupils’ talents and creative works to the parents and community. • To involve pupils in English fun-learning activities in a non-threatening environment • To share H.I.P activities with parents and their role of parents in H.I.P activities. • To strengthen the relationship among the school communities and their stakeholders. Description of Activity: English Fun Week & H.I.P with the Community was held on 04th until 07th July 2022 – where the closing ceremony was done on the final day involving all the parents, SISC+ officers from Beaufort District Education Officers as well as government and non-government organisations. Various fun and challenging activities for the pupils to participate were conducted in collaboration among teachers of different subjects in the school, namely: English, Bahasa Melayu, Mathematics, Science, Reka Bentuk Teknologi and Pendidikan Islam. The school allocated 2 hours daily for each subject to carry out their activities involving all the pupils (04th – 06th July 2022). The activities were Word Search, Storytelling, Colouring Contest, etc. There were also activities which were designed for the teachers, such as the Tongue Twister. During the final day of H.I.P with the Community, parents and local community who attended the event were also invited to participate in various games – including the Read-Aloud Challenge and Matching Games (for a duo of parents and their children). In addition, the government organisation and NGO were invited for exhibition, as well as health and financial consultations respectively. Since Bangkalalak is a small village situated at a rural area which is far from the town of Beaufort, the educational event which showcased the pupils’ potentials and school’s achievement, as well as booth services provided by the government institutions and NGO is much appreciated by the local community. In fact, all the school-community and guests invited were encouraged to speak English during the programme – i.e., the whole-school approach to ensure the sustainability of H.I.P!

[SABAH H.I.P MATTERS] Celebrating Inspirations from Schools 53 Impact: Overall, the school is proud to share this programme as a success story. There were observable significant impacts of the programme. First and foremost, the active participation and support from the headmaster imposed positive implication on the teachers’ motivation, parents’ involvement with amazing support from the stakeholders. Teachers, especially the non-English teachers, were highly motivated to engage in English activities with pupils and parents during the event. Their motivation to converse in English was not so encouraging before the event. The event provided a platform for the pupils to showcase their talents and potentials in various activities – especially, the storytelling competition. Some pupils orally shared with their teachers that the competition trained them to become more confident to speak in the public. Basically, the pupils gained self-confidence, determination, and excitement through participating in the fun-learning English activities conducted under H.I.P. Parents were very supportive as they took the time-off from their daily work as fishermen and farmers to attend the H.I.P with the Community event and participate actively in the activities specially arranged for them. Their attendance in the event might affect their earning of the day and therefore the teachers were very touched of their presence. Moreover, parents were enthusiastic to witness the exhibition which showcased their children’s talents and learning potential. They were proud of their children! Parents also showed their support to H.I.P by involving in spontaneous conversation with the SISC+ Officer from Beaufort District Education Office, headmaster and teachers using simple English during the event. Bravo! Way Forward: Since SK Bangkalalak is also involved under HIP-FINCO Reads 2022/2023, it is highly hoped that the collaboration bound through the event would be extended in promoting and expanding the impact of the programme – for example: encouraging the parents to support their children’s reading-enrichment venture by reading aloud together and storytelling at home (to put the collection of books funded by FINCO into use). Other than that, school beautification project is suggested to extend H.I.P with the Community project in the future with the support expected from parents and NGO.
