who took care of him along with three of Sultan Ibrahim's sons, namely Tunku
Mahkota Ismail, Tunku Abu Bakar and Tunku Ahmad. In 1903, He furthered his

the princes of the Sultan of Johor. As such, Sultan Ibrahim had funded his studies in
England and he was the best student in English and French. Dato Onn continue her
studies after returning home (1910-1911) at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar to
study Bahasa Melayu.
Career
Dato 'Onn once served as a District Officer in the British colonial administration,
but later resigned for objecting to colonial policies.
At 1 - March 4, 1946, 41 Malay associations have gathered at the Sultan
Sulaiman Club in Kuala Lumpur to attend the first Malay Congress held to
oppose the Malayan Union was seen as a threat to the privileged position of the
Malays and the Malay Sultans. As a result of this meeting, a body representing
the Malay party was established when Congress was held in Johor Baru on May
1, 1946. Due to Dato Onn was very active in the Malay nationalist movement,
the congress appointed him as the first president.
Career
On 1 October 1946, Datuk Onn was appointed Menteri Besar of Johor. Three years
later, he resigned to devote time to UMNO. Under his leadership, UMNO succeeded
in forcing the British government to dissolve the Malayan Union and replaced by the
Federation of Malaya. 1948 Federation of Malaya maintain the position of the Malay
Rulers and the tightening of the conditions of citizenship, and give Malays privileges.
Datuk Onn then feel disappointed with what he perceives as racist policies of UMNO,
and suggest that party membership is open to all residents of Malaya, regardless of race,
and the name of UMNO changed to "Organization of the United Malays National
Population Land". As the proposal was opposed, Dato Onn resigned as UMNO
president when the Sixth General Assembly was held on 25 - 26 August 1951.
Career
Dato Onn then set up the Independence of Malaya Party (IMP) on August 26, 1951.
Unfortunately, the party did not have the support of the Malays. In 1954, he left the
party to form the National Party for the purpose of contesting in the general election, the
first in the Federation of Malaya in 1955. The State Party not restrict membership of the
Malays in an attempt to gain the support of the Malays. Despite this, his party still
failed to gain support and did not win any seats in the election. However, Dato Onn is
still trying to get a place in politics. Finally, he managed to get a seat in the Kuala
Terengganu Selatan parliamentary constituency in the 1959 General Election with the
help of the PAS party.
Contribution
Dato 'Onn bin Jaafar has various contributions to the formation of Malaysia,
especially in the political aspect. The first contribution Dato 'Onn bin Jaafar in the
political aspect and indirectly opened the eyes of the community about the
importance of unity for the independence of Malaya in 1946. The first step is
establishing his executed by the Malay party United Malays National Organization
(UMNO) at 11 May 1946 and he was also appointed the first UMNO president.
UMNO is the establishment of a string of events the Japanese occupation of Malaya
during the years 1942 to 1945. This led to the spirit of nationalism among the
Malays mounting. Society also began to realize that to achieve independence it was
not necessary to rely on the British government alone but they were also able to gain
independence in their own way.
Contribution
Through the establishment of UMNO, Dato 'Onn
trying to foster a spirit of unity, nationalism and anti-colonial feeling among the
Malay community to achieve the independence of Malaya. UMNO movement when
it really means nowadays for UMNO often hold public meetings throughout Malaya
until UMNO managed to make an agreement with the British government with the
Malay rulers to draft a new constitution.
Services Dato 'Onn increasingly important in achieving independence in Malaya and
unite the Malays. Dato 'Onn Jaafar has expressed its intention of ' Malaya for
Malayan ' which means the Malayan races. In October 1948, he paid a visit to
London and stated that it was important to avoid suspicion of other races such as
Chinese and Indians as well as he thought all races should be united in one party.
Dato ’Onn has also successfully resolved the racist issues raised in the Majlis
newspaper which questioned whether action should be taken against the Chinese
community involved in communist activities.
Contribution
The establishment of UMNO also emphasizes the community's economic
development. Donations and business Dato 'Onn in advancing the community is
very significant to date because we can see the percentage of Malays involved in
economic activities is increasing. The General Assembly also enacted the Five Year
Plan that emphasizes economy in Malay society that is based on objective UMNO
increase income and capital, encouraging participation in the business world, set up
technical schools and train young people on a variety of skills.
During Dato 'Onn as UMNO president, he was always championing the Malays
backward compared to other communities to set up the Board of the Company and
the Village Development (RIDA), now known as Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA)
in mid-1950 in Kuala Lumpur chaired by him alone. RIDA provide assistance to the
community living in villages in order to produce commercially valuable products
and RIDA will market the product in the domestic market until they can take care of
themselves and they will take over the business.
Contribution
Contribution Dato 'Onn Jaafar of social aspects can be seen through her principles
intact to unite different communities in Malaya through an establishment such as
IMP Party, the Independence Party and the National Party of Malaya. He tried to
foster a spirit of nationalism and unity among the Malays, Chinese and Indians to
unite gained independence together. But action Dato 'Onn was opposed by the
Malays because they are worried that their position will be threatened in Malaya.
Various efforts were made by him to put his trust to the people by declaring his wish
that the people of Malaya should be united as a democracy fighting for
independence together. For example, he managed to attract the influence of China
and India to join IMP but opposed by the Malays through the establishment of
alliances and coalitions indirectly attract Chinese and Indian influences join Umno,
MIC and MCA.
Contribution
With the establishment of sound IMP can be seen all three major
races in Malaya, the Malay, Indian and Chinese gained attention in the conference.
Dato ’Onn is trying to create a just party and a harmonious society and together to
fight for independence for one citizenship is not to fight for independence according
to their respective races. This will leave an impact on the community in the future
and the process of integration and unity among the community is increasingly
difficult to foster.
Leadership Values
Bravery
An excellent leader must show the best personality to his people. To be honest as a
leader, we must take courage Dato 'Onn Jaafar where he is not afraid to fight for the
British in the fate of the Malays in colonial times immemorial. We need to practice
that nature when we want to voice opinions as well as criticism against superiors so
that feelings of fear and anxiety will disappear. With that, the people will be more
confident in ourselves while in government because of the courage in achieving the
goal.
Sincerity
Sincerity will not be seen from one’s point of view. As a leader, this trait should be
placed in the heart because in every action we decide on it is definitely through the
consent of the heart. This will make the results of our work while being leaders will
be seen best in the eyes of the people because of good intentions that beautify the
way we work. Therefore, this nature must be evident in a leader so that the journey
in the world of leadership is not distorted.
Leadership Values
Nationalism Spirit
The spirit of nationalism is a very deep feeling of love for a nation and country. So,
as a leader, this matter must be implemented in the soul as Dato 'Onn Jaafar who
never tired of fighting in the political world until he founded 3 parties, namely
UMNO, IMP and Parti Negara. This will make a leader not lose the identity of his
nation and make him brave in defending the sovereignty of this country. With that,
our country will be guaranteed security from external threats because of leaders who
have a high spirit of sacrifice towards the country.
Wisdom
Wisdom is seen in the way we solve problems, study problems and apply those
problems to something useful. This value is not necessarily present in every
moment because it is based on past experience. As a leader of caliber, we must
remove ourselves from the comfort zone like Dato ’Onn Jaafar who left his post as
Menteri Besar of Johor and subsequently activated himself in the political world
that is still new to him. This will make a leader achieve critical thinking that creates
a gap between the people. Therefore, leaders can help resolve all national affairs
without any problems because they are accustomed to the difficult situation.
Conclusion
In conclusion, we can see how Dato 'Onn Jaafar is a respected leader in Johor and
Malaysia. He was very dedicated in the goal of championing the rights of the Malays
and defend the position of the Malay Kings at first. Therefore, as Students Leader
Board Murid based in Johor, we must take the positive values that exist in his
struggle because the nature of leadership that he has achieved is very realistic with
his achievements. I hope to all leaders in Johor and Malaysia to always apply
excellent personal qualities so that the future of this country is not filled with
downfall.
