This is the first social innovation of its kind in Malaysia, providing communication modules for ex-convicts based on their needs. The modules cover verbal and non-verbal, virtual, and basic English communication, and were designed based on interviews with parolees and prison officers. Competitive Advantage PRISON LEARNING PROJECT: ENRICHING ADULT INMATES WITH COMMUNICATION MODULES Enrichment Communication Modules tested with parolees and inmates. Licensed for Virtual Communication Module, awaiting approval for other two modules. Once approved, can market to all prisons in Malaysia. Product Roadmap The Enrichment Programme is a UMS funded research which obtained RM55,700 for a 3- year research which began in 2020 and ended in early 2023. The Enrichment Communication Modules were designed based on a Needs Analysis interview with parolees and prison officers. From the findings, the three modules were designed and before they were used in the pilot study, the modules were fine-tuned three times in sessions with the modules writers, research team members, as well as prison officers. The pilot study was conducted in July - August 2022 and Phase 1 was in September - October 2022. Research & Development Commercialization Strategy The Enrichment Programme has potential revenue streams as a teaching and learning tool on communication skills for inmates in Malaysia. At the moment, there are a total of roughly 80,000 inmates in all 42 Malaysian prisons. This figure is an evidence that the Enrichment Programme has a great commercial value to produce quality human capital. Revenue may also be generated from licensing agreement to interested parties and also the direct sales of the modules. This research is led by Pn Junaidah Januin, an experienced senior lecturer in Applied Linguistics. Her team consists of six members. Datin Dr Veronica P.Atin, a specialist in Curriculum and Instructional Design and Linguistics, and Pn Wan Hurani Osman who is also Applied Linguist specialist, Associate Professor Dr Halina Sandera in the field of Communication and Associate Professor Mohd Azri Ibrahim, an expert in Political Science. The team also comprises two Prison officers PKK Teyun Thian Eim, KIP Nicky@Nezuan Zaini, and IP Mohd Azri Matahir from The Sabah State and Kota Kinabalu Prisons, Sabah. Team The Enrichment Programme Communication Modules revenue will depend on its acceptance by the Malaysia Prison Department, and funding may be sought for further research and development on this community engagement programme.
