BLOOMINGTON COUNTRY CLUB NEWS 4 July, 2019
From the BCC Grounds…
It has certainly been an interesting year so far for maintaining the golf course. All through May
and the beginning of June, all we could talk about was when it would stop raining, then at the
beginning of June the rain shut off for a couple of weeks, and the course dried down very
quickly providing us with firm and fast golfing conditions.
Having such a wet spring and early summer can be stressful on turf though, specifically on
areas that hold water and receive a lot of traffic, both conditions that cause poor rooting. These areas quickly became
evident as the golf course dried out and the shallow roots could not reach the water that was still present farther down in
the soil, and areas that are normally wet required more water than areas that are more conditioned to being dry. The late
start to the irrigation “season” also kept us on our toes with sprinkler maintenance as we found bugs in the irrigation
system that are normally worked out by now.
The drier weather and increased summer staff allowed us finally starting to feel like we are catching up on our maintenance
tasks, and of course, keeping up with the rough mowing! This summer we are fortunate to have hired six new college and
high school age staff members that are all working varying levels of part time. They are great workers, and having them
work part-time allows us to have larger staff numbers in the morning and on the weekends when we need it most. They
really seem to enjoy the work, and we are hopeful to have them come back for a few more summers while they are in
school.
Now that we are finally feeling more caught up on our task lists, we continue to chip away at small projects that have been
pushed to the bottom of the list. Recently, we have freshened up the red rock cart path ends, continued to work on
mulching planting beds, and sodded some areas where we have lost trees. We will continue to work on these little detail
touches, and we hope that you are enjoying them! Lets hope for continued better weather, and a great July.
See you all on the course!

WGA Guest Event BCC rolled out the red carpet for the WGA guest event
hosting over 100 golfers between Tuesday, June 18th and Wednesday June
19th. The Course was gorgeous (thank you Matt Harstad and (Barb

delivered seamlessly to our WGA guests (thank you Chef Mark and Carl

And who planned and organized this superb Guest
Event? The Guest Event committee of Connie Mueller,
Maggi Pratt, Sue Stroyan, Barby Pratt Mecherle, Ann

hard working committee for your dedication and
service for the enjoyment of the women of the WGA

MKH The Mary Kay Herrmann match play tournament unfolds with thrills and excitement as the women play
their matches. Many women are playing in this tournament for the first time-it can be stressful to compete
against your friends. All are putting their hearts into winning (and losing) with courtesy and good will. Well
done! Thanks again to Sue Ellen Concklin and Gina Weltman for getting the MKH back up and running.
Ladies Interclub BCC will host the Interclub tournament on Friday, July 12th. The Interclub team of Andrea
Ginnetti, Colleen Curran, Sue Ellen Concklin, Julie Brownlee, Elaine Krupka, Courtney Dobson and (welcome!)
Carla Temple and Melanie Anderson are looking forward to playing well and having fun on their own course
while hosting women golfers from other clubs in our area. Thank you Interclub team.
WGA July Meeting After the Wednesday, July 3rd scramble, be sure to join us for lunch in the Bellemont
Room for a short meeting to provide the Association with current updates. Katie Good and Beth Horvath will
lead the meeting. All Tuesday WGA members are invited to join us around noon for the lunch and meeting.
As is evident in this article, there is much to be grateful for, and many to be grateful to, as we enjoy the lazy,
crazy, hazy days of summer enjoying friendship, competition and the beauty surrounding us as we play golf
at Bloomington County Club.
