2017 Goreschak Gazette

Gazette 2017 final

The Goreschak Gazette
Jacksonville, Florida December 2017 Editor: Sheri Goreschak

Weekend in Melbourne Melbourne, FL
Since David was working in Melbourne for the summer, the rest of the Goreschak
family made the quick trip to visit him for a weekend in July. Just a weekend visit
was short, but it was packed with activities –
planned and unexpected surprises. The family
shot trap and skeet at the O.K. Corral and then
visited Lake Okeechobee – where they saw a
couple of HUGE alligators swimming. During
an evening walk on Indiatlantic Beach, the
foursome came upon baby sea turtles emerging
from their nest in the sand and making their
way to the ocean. The
family made their own
escape later that evening
when they visited a local
escape room, where the
appropriate theme in this
beach town was pirates!

‘The Seashores of Old Mexico’ Cancun, Mexico
In 1990, Bill and Sheri honeymooned
in Cancun, Mexico. This past
October, they returned to the
beautiful location for a vacation with
Mark and Joan Refosco (who also
spent their honeymoon in Cancun).
Beautiful weather provided plenty
of opportunities for walking on
the beach, relaxing by the pool and
swimming in the turquoise water of
the Caribbean Sea.
A quick day trip
offered excitement
in the form of zip-
lining and a ride
in an “amphibious
vehicle”!

David’s Summer Internship Melbourne, FL

After working at Northrop Grumman in St.
Augustine during the summer of 2016, David
returned to the company for the summer of 2017
- this time in Melbourne, FL. The Melbourne
site is considered the company’s “Manned
Aircraft Design Center of Excellence” –
perfectly aligning with David’s major, Aerospace
Engineering. David cannot discuss any specifics
about his work since Northrop Grumman is a
government contractor, but says that he very much
enjoyed helping to design subsystems for large
aircraft. In addition, his summer was full of trips
to the beach and other adventures. David and
his team of interns took first place at the Summer
Games, the company’s intracompany Olympic-
style competition. He has committed to return for
another Summer internship in 2018.

Eric’s Summer Internship Mandarin, FL
After his freshman year at Florida, Eric worked for the Stellar
Group in Jacksonville. Stellar is a design/build commercial
construction company employing many architects,
contractors and engineers. Eric worked in the refrigeration
division and had the task of printing (on a 3-D printer),
then assembling models of the systems the company had
designed for clients. The work was a great opportunity for
Eric to learn and he plans to return to Stellar next summer
to continue the learning experience.

Bill & Sheri Take on the Biltmore Asheville, NC
This year, the annual Arthur Rutenberg Homes conference was held in Asheville, NC.
Bill and Sheri stayed at the beautiful Grove Park Inn.
Built in the late 1800s, the resort still had the charm
and many of the features from that time frame –
including tiny elevators, which required operators.
The couple did enjoy tours at the beautiful Biltmore
estate while in the area. A special roof-top tour
provided interesting details of the architecture and
construction of the magnificent home and grounds.

College Life Gainesville, FL
In the spring, Eric, a sophomore, joined the
Sigma Chi Fraternity and several of his friends became
his “brothers”. Greek activities – tailgates, socials with
sororities, and staying awake to dance for 24 hours
raising money for charities - are just some of the fun that
fill his spare time when he is not in class or studying, of
course. The Sigma Chi flag football team (winless in
the regular season) became the UF Men’s Fraternity League Champions after going
undefeated in the playoffs. The final game was played in the Swamp in December,
bringing more excitement to that field than had been seen in a few months!
In his junior year, David has been staying
busy with his major of Mechanical/Aerospace
Engineering and with all of his extra-curricular
activities. He is currently serving as the president
of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers,
a professional organization for students in that
major. In addition, his passion for Habitat
for Humanity continues. He is serving as the
president of the UF chapter, on the Board of Directors
for Alachua Habitat and frequently spends Saturday
mornings as a volunteer builder at the two ‘UF Houses’ -
homes built exclusively by UF students.
Not wanting to forget their college days, Bill and
Sheri have made several trips back down to Gainesville
since David and Eric have been attending UF - even
making it to a few Gator games this season!

Sheri’s 50th Birthday and 5th Hair Donation Jacksonville, FL

In March Sheri turned the big 5-0! When asked about the
milestone, Sheri said she didn’t feel any older. However,
the photo (right) would indicate
otherwise. Probably as a distraction,
it was around that same time that she
made her fifth donation of hair to
Locks of Love. Over the last decade,
she has donated approximately five
feet of hair to be used to make wigs
for children suffering from long-
term hair loss.

Eric’s New Apartment with Old Furniture Gainesville, FL

After spending his freshman year in a dorm, Eric and
roommates – Matthew and Jack – moved to an apartment.
Finding himself in need of bedroom furniture, Eric was
offered a nice bedroom set that originally belonged to Bill’s
parents and was used by Bill growing up and in college.
Not fond of the white washed finish that was applied in
the early 1990s by
Bill and Sheri, Eric
decided to sand,
strip and refinish the
pieces himself. Of course, the project was
more difficult and took longer than expected.
However, the end result was incredible.

In Loving Memory of

William Walter Goreschak

June 23, 1934 - April 21, 2017

After his fourth battle with cancer, Bill’s father passed
away in April. While he will be terribly missed this
holiday season, the family is forever grateful for the
time they were blessed to spend with him.

Christmas Tree Strimko Puzzle
The Christmas Tree is decorated with four
garlands of seven bulbs each. Some bulbs
contain numbers. Fill in all the vacant bulbs
with number 1-7, a number per bulb, so
that each garland contains seven diffferent
numbers. Also, any straight line of bulbs
parallel to the sides of the Christmas Tree
(horizontal and diagonal), should contain
only different numbers as well.

The Goreschaks wish you a Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year!
