Blog: The Generational Divide in Digital Parenting Styles –
Millennial Parents vs. Gen-X Parents

In August 2021, Smith Micro surveyed 2,000 American parents of school-age
kids to learn more about the digital parenting tools and approaches they use to
manage screen time, digital content consumption, and connected device usage.
We analyzed the results by parent ages, splitting the survey pool into four
groups: parents aged 18-24, parents aged 25-40, parents aged 41-56, and
parents 57 years or older. To find out key insights & trends, continue reading >>

Blog: Rules-Based vs. Values-Based Parenting Styles – How
the Family’s Relationship with Technology Has Shifted

For parents, the new reliance on technology upended pre-COVID plans to curb
screen time in favor of alternative activities. Parents and children alike began
dealing with entirely new challenges in their relationship with technology as the
pandemic unfolded. Now, many parents are trying to balance increased screen
time with meaningful discussions about technology with their children — and it’s
not easy. Read blog post>>

Get To Know Your CFO

Read below for a Q&A with our new CFO, Jim Kempton!

Tell us a little bit about your background, where did you grow up & go to college?
I was born and raised in the Pittsburgh area, growing up in Bethel Park. I went to
Thiel College, which is about an hour and a half north of Pittsburgh. Out of college, I
started my career at Ernst & Young, spending a little more than nine years there.
Most recently, I was with LB Foster, a manufacturer specializing in infrastructure
headquartered in Pittsburgh.

Tell us about your family.
I’m married and have three children. My oldest son is 16, and my younger son is 14.
My daughter is 11 years old. My wife works part time helping to teach preschoolers at
the school that my two younger children attend.

What are your top hobbies & interests outside of work?
I really enjoy watching my children play their respective sports. My oldest son plays
soccer, and my younger son plays deck hockey. My daughter plays soccer as well and
competes in gymnastics. So, we spend a lot of our weekends headed to their various
games and competitions. I also enjoy fishing, but don’t get out nearly as much as I’d
like to. I also enjoy cooking quite a bit.

What are you most excited about in working at Smith Micro?
I think that it’s an exciting time to join Smith Micro as I believe that combining the
Avast Family Safety business with Smith Micro’s Safepath platform really positions
the Company to significantly grow over the next several years. I’m really looking
forward to working with the rest of the Smith Micro team as we build on the
Company’s success.

Holiday Traditions Around the World!

We asked our colleagues about their favorite holiday traditions. Continue reading to

learn more!

Åke Brissman, from the Mirva Johanson, from the Stockholm office,
Stockholm office, enjoys meeting loves the four-week period leading up to
friends and have some good Christmas known as Advent. Mirva enjoys
times during “Midsommar”, lighting the Advent candlestick and drinking
Midsummer eve! glögg (a Nordik spicy wine) and eating
pepparkakor (spicy ginger cookies) with friends

and family!

Andrea Pecova, from Slovakia, has
her favorite holiday tradition of
Christmas Eve dinner with family.
The best part about the meal
includes slicing an apple: If the
nuclues is star shaped, the family
will be healthy all year round. Other
favorites include homeade
Christmas waffles served with
honey - yum!

Isabel Casanova, from the Braga office, says her favorite Holiday tradition is having
family together near the fireplace, playing fun games (cards, board games or
monopoly) and laugh, as we wait for the midnight to open the presents… Their smiles,
the smell of cookies and cinnamon, I will save this memory forever! In Portugal it is
common to have on the 24th what is called the "Christmas dinner," where codfish and
octopus are the stars with boiled potatoes and cabbage and a lot of deserts at the end.

WINTER FITNESS TIPS

Without a gym membership, or too cold to leave the house, people can feel lost
when it comes to staying in shape as winter approaches. However, with a little
creativity and some basic equipment it's not hard, and can even be fun, to stay in
shape all winter long! See below for a few tips & practices to stay active this winter.

Home Workout: A workout DVD or even a quick YouTube search to find indoor aerobic
routines can pay off when you have limited space. If you have weights, resistance bands, a
skipping rope, a stability ball, trampoline, or other equipment, you can incorporate those into
a great full body workout.
Active TV Watching: Don't want to miss your favorite TV show? Try jogging or skipping on
the spot while you watch. Take it up a notch: Do squats, push ups, or burpees during the
commercial breaks.
Mall Walking: When walking outdoors is not an option, do laps inside your local shopping
mall. For the average person, a brisk one-hour walk can burn 300 to 400 calories. Take it up a
notch: If there are multiple levels in the mall, climb stairs or walk up escalators to challenge
your leg muscles and burn extra calories.
Indoor Sports: Join a team or individual sports program. Competition levels can range from
recreational to expert. The most cost effective programs are usually run by local
municipalities where gym space at a local school or community centre is secured and people
drop in for a game of basketball, floor hockey or other team sports. You can also sign up for
any number of aerobics classes, dance classes or other group fitness sessions.

Thank You!
