How To Guide
Part 4:
Turning with a Hoist

What are Satin Slide Sheets?
A base sheet with a satin panel provides a low friction sliding surface making it easier for a user
to turn and move in bed. When the user is not so mobile, the base sheet can be combined with
a draw sheet to allow easy turning and positioning by a carer. There is no need to remove the
sheets after turning or repositioning, as they are designed to be left on the bed.
Satin Slide Sheet Design
All Pro4S satin slide sheets have a pattern of dark blue stripes on a white background. The
stripes indicate the directions in which a slide movement can be made. There are two versions:
2 Way - Side to side movement 4 Way - Up, down and side to side movement

General Guidance
These instructions are for guidance only - approved moving and handling
techniques should always be used in accordance with a moving and
handling plan.
It is important to make sure that the base sheet is centrally located on the
mattress so that the striped edging of it is equally distributed on both sides
of the bed. These sections act as ‘braking areas’ and are there to prevent the
user from sliding out of bed.
Ensure base sheets are properly fixed in place on the mattress. Flat sheets
must be tucked securely under the mattress on either side. Fitted sheets
should be secured in place using the elastic loops or fitted corners.
In order to prevent unwanted movement after repositioning, draw sheets
should be tucked securely under the mattress on either side. Where an air
flow mattress is in use, the draw sheet should be more loosely tucked under
on both sides to ensure it does not impede with the flow of air.
Never leave a user unattended near the edge of a bed. Always secure their
position with an appropriate wedge or cushion, or raise the bed side rails
where provided.
For user comfort, and to prevent pressure areas, any creasing must be
removed by pulling taut on each corner of the sheet once repositioning
is complete.
In Single Handed Care situations, non-slip mats and non-slip positioning will
still secure the user’s position even when used on the satin section of the
sheets.

Turning a user with a Draw Sheet and a Hoist
1) Untuck the draw sheet from underneath the mattress. Stand next to the side of the
bed you want to turn the user away from. Ensure the user’s arms and legs are
positioned ready for the turn, to avoid limbs getting stuck beneath them.

2) Lift up the side of the draw sheet which you wish to attach the hoist to. This will
expose the handles which are sited next to the satin section. Grasp the handles next
to the shoulder and hip of the user.

3) Adopting a bracing stance, use small movements to gradually pull the draw sheet
towards you using the handles. This will bring the user closer to the edge, ready for
turning into the middle of the bed.

5) Attach the spreader bar to the chosen strap sections adjacent to the shoulder and
hip areas of the user.
7

6) Slowly raise the hoist until the sheet leverage rolls the user over from their back into
a side lying position.

8) To return the user to their back, slowly lower the hoist. As the sheet leverage slackens,
the user will gradually descend from their side to lying on their back.

9) From the opposite side of the bed, lift up the side of the draw sheet to expose the
handles. Grasp the handles next to the shoulder and hip of the user.

10) Adopting a bracing stance, use small movements to gradually pull the draw sheet
towards you using the handles. This will bring the user back in the centre of the bed.

11) Pull on each corner of the taut sheet to smooth out any creases behind the user.
This is important for comfort and to prevent pressure areas.
13

12) Once repositioning is complete, the draw sheet should be tucked under the
mattress on both sides to prevent the user from having further movement.
