TEACHER’S REPORT
Guided By- Ms Shovna De, Vice Principal and ISA Coordinator
‘To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow’ and to plant a garden it is
important to know about plants. In the first British council activity Green
Thumb, Grade 7 students of our EuroSchool Wakad learned about
different plants. This project helped students to explore facts about different
herbal/ medicinal plants, uses of plants found in western region of India.
Some of the herbal /medicinal plants found in countries like Germany,
China, and Sri- Lanka are similar to those in India and are of same family
genre; this was the turning point for our students during the pre-herbarium
writing and content selection step and had a great impact and imparted
good zeal in them about nature and its vast store of plants. Information
collected was pr e s e n t e d t h r o u g h power point presentation and
exhibition in the school.
The visit to Botanical Survey of India, Pune was of great help to them as it
helped them to know the vast natural endemic species found in western
region of India and it was definitely a good booster to their first step of
herbarium making.
Our G r e e n thumb coordinators M s . Selvi J, M s . Jyothi M and Ms.
Surekha Singh helped to select plants which were widespread across
these four countries and had common use, medicinal /herbal properties. As
a first step of activity, students selected 4-5 plants, collected their specimen
samples and compiled it in Herbarium scrap book.
Green Thumb exhibition was held o n 21st of August 2018, in which
exhibits o f herbarium- scrap book, live plants and power point
presentation of herbal /medicinal plants, terrarium and comparative study
charts of medicinal plants from India, Germany, China and Sri-Lanka
were displayed.
Overall this activity has given students comprehensive and precise
information about plants, its medicinal use and they also learned, how our
ancestors and culture has well slated the use of herbs as natures hand to
cure common disease and help prevent others, besides this general
awareness to conserve the green wealth and nurturing life giving creation of
God is developed among students and facilitators.

TRIP TO BOTANICAL SURVEY OF INDIA (BSI)
EDUCATIONAL TRIP TO BOTANICAL SURVEY OF INDIA
Educational trips to Botanical gardens are invaluable in raising awareness of plant
conservation issues and promoting the importance of plant conservation in
sustainable development.
Grade VII students at the "BOTANICAL SURVEY OF INDIA (BSI)
Grade VII students of EuroSchool Wakad, visited the "BOTANICAL SURVEY
OF INDIA (BSI)” on 19th of July 2018 to study and understand the technique of
making a Herbarium. The trip to the Botanical garden was a part of the project
'Green Thumb’, Curriculum Activity 1 of the International School Award of
British Council.
Students reached the venue at 11:00 A.M. and were introduced to Dr. Priyanka
and Dr. Jadhav, scientists in B.S.I (Pune) .Students were guided to the conference
hall, where, Dr. Priyanka explained them about various sections of BSI and other
zones where branches are located, through visuals. This was followed by a
question answer session which helped the students clarify their queries regarding
tissue culture, conversion, types of plants, fossils etc.
Address by Dr.Priyanka, Scientists in B.S.I (Pune)
Address by Dr.Jadhav, Scientists in B.S.I (Pune)
They were then guided to the Herbarium and Dr. Priyanka explained all the steps and
precautions with respect to the procedure of creating a herbarium using IXORA plant
as a specimen. Students got an opportunity to see and understand the herbarium
with 1,70,000 specimens from all over the country. Demonstration on creating a
herbarium was extremely knowledgeable.

Explanation of tissue culture was another area which aroused curiosity in the
young minds.
The most exciting part of the trip was the Botanical Museum. The museum houses
about 826 exhibits including large carpological collections. Panels depicting
various vegetation types, new taxa described herbarium specimens of threatened
and endangered species, poisonous or toxic plants, insectivorous plants, fossils etc.
have also been displayed in the museum. Students learnt about representative
specimens of Algae, Fungi and Lichens displayed.
Getting closer to nature –Botanical Museum
Dr.Sukumar, incharge of the museum explaining F O S S I L formation
This trip to the BSI helped students to appreciate, wonder and understand the beauty and
complexity of nature. Walking through the garden looking closely at the orchid cultivation
amongst many other plants and trees filled their hearts with joy.
Few of the exhibits which attracted the students most were, the Flora of Maharashtra
State ( Dicotyledones) (Ranunculaceae to Rhizophoraceae , Ceratophyllaceae) Endemic
and Threatened Flowering Plants of Maharashtra.
Ethnobotany of Dadra, Nagar Haveli and Daman (Union Territories). Mangroves of Goa
Flora of Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Borivali, Maharashtra. Flowering Plants of India:
Dicotyledons etc.
