announcer and then as Amharic news anchor while I was
very young .. right after immediately joining ET.

There are lots of encounters and experiences that
happen day to day as the job exposes you to the public.
You get a lot of feedback which most of it was positive.

I don’t have as such a holiday story to share but what
I mostly encountered was when people see me in the streets
or shops, they think I am one of their relatives and give me
warm greetings, and then they realize they know me from
the TV. That was really enjoyable to me to see their reactions
on their faces.

LIVING AND WORKING THROUGH THE PANDEMIC

It has been 5 months since COVID-19 infection reached our country. Since then, the infection has
been progressing from early stage to advanced and late stage. During early stage, the infection was limited
among those that have exposure to known infected sick people while in the advanced late stage, the infection
has reached community transmission. During this pandemic, you might have been staying home, practicing
lockdown, vacationing or working continuously. But the measures that you need to take to prevent yourself,
family and colleagues from the infection remain the same. These measures, that may look very simple and
elementary, are the best tools that can protect you from the infection during all stages. This is the advice given
by every health expert from all parts of the world and these are;

• Frequent hand washing habits

• Avoid touching the face with unwashed hands

• Wearing face mask when staying with people

• Maintaining physical distancing

These measures have to be practiced consistently for maximal protection to prevent the infection.
Additionally, people that have been practicing “healthy living styles” (described below) before the pandemic,
have been seen to resist the infection much better and even if infected, are seen to develop mild infection.

Healthy living styles include; maintaining healthy body weight, choosing a balanced diet, exercising
regularly, restricting alcohol intake, avoiding cigarettes’ and maintaining a positive attitude to cope with
stress.

As this infection is new, several people can become stressed because of anxiety while at home, work
or at health institutes. Most anxieties and stress are results of unjustified informations and facts which are
mostly found in social medias. Hence, the best treatment to overcome the anxiety and stress would be to get
information from reliable sources and avoid upsetting medias. Developing positive thinking, staying calm and
acting sensibly are the corner stones of preventing stress and anxiety.

Flight Simulation is used for a variety of reasons, including flight training, the design and development of

the aircraft itself, and research into aircraft characteristics and control handling qualities.

A flight simulator is a device that artificially re-creates aircraft flight and the environment in which it flies.
A flight simulator provides several advantages and are integral to modern aviation programs. Whenever you
are using flight simulators, fuel costs, insurance fees and other aircraft related costs are going to be cutoff while
adding up Safety, Training availability (20 hours per day) and difficult training scenarios which is not affordable
to try on an aircraft and a Human life, such as Engine fire and disintegration, Ditching, Upset Recovery Training,
etc.

Most flight training centers own and operate different types of aircraft simulators including Ethiopian. There
are various types, classifications and ratings of flight simulators from Home built to real Full Flight Simulators.

In general, starting from the simple simulation programs to the complex Full Flight Simulators, it is going to
cost $69 - $15 million without the facility costs. Ethiopian installed the first Full Flight Simulator (B767) on 1993.

Ethiopian airlines currently own 7 Full Flight simulators (B767, B737, B737 Max, A350, B777, B787, Q400),
6 Flight Training Devices (DA40, DA42, C172, B737), 2 Wide Bodied and Narrow Bodied Cabin Crew trainers
(B757, B787, B737 with and without motion), 3 Cabin Crew Door Trainers (Q400, B767, A350), 5 Integrated
Pilot Trainers (B777, B787, B737MAX, Q400, A350) which is a total sum of 23 Flight Simulators. Thousands of
pilots, cabin crew and flight crew trainees has been trained from different countries since the installation of our
first simulator B707 several years ago and All of Ethiopian pilots are trained in the base (HQ) currently.

As a summary, Ethiopian committed to boost this division because of three main reasons; to Train Safely, to
Train any time in less time for less expense.

MESKEL FESTIVAL

Meskel celebration is a religious holiday held to commemorate the discovery of the True Cross upon which
Jesus was crucified. The legend goes that in the 4th century AD the Roman Empress Helena, mother of Constantine
the Great, received a vision in a dream where to find the cross. She ordered the people of Jerusalem to collect
wood, and the smoke from a huge bonfire apparently indicated the location where the cross was buried. Meskel
is celebrated for two days beginning on September 26th. The first day is Demera (September 26), the eve of
Meskel in which bonfires are built topped by a cross on which flowers are tied. The eve of Meskel is observed
with great celebration and festivity with friends and family, the Demera burns until it turns entirely into ashes. As
it burns and collapses the direction where the Demera falls is believed to predict the major events to happen in
the year ahead. The largest Meskel celebration takes place at Meskel square in Addis Ababa. The next day which
is the actual Meskel, people go to the spot of the Demera and use the ashes to mark their foreheads with the sign
of the cross. There is a lot to eat and drink as people celebrate together. One of the significant occurrences of the
festival is the coinciding with the mass blooming of Meskel flowers, the golden yellow daisies. During the leap
year the celebration takes place on September 27, Otherwise it is celebrated on September 26.

In 2013, UNESCO has inscribed Meskel on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of
Humanity. Meskel celebration attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists to Ethiopia and it has become one of
the major boosts to the country’s tourism industry.

Marshaling is visual signal, radio communication and part of aircraft ground handling. It is dedicated
on (VHF) radio communications with (ATC) Air Traffic Controller & receives the ETA (Estimate Time
of Arrival) and disseminates ETA (Estimate Time of Arrival) to announcer and pre planning Aircraft
parking positions for landing traffics. Simultaneously inform the aircraft parking stands to ATC and other
concerned bodies. On the aerodrome (airside) the Marshaller signals communicate with the pilot for
the direction of the aircraft to park safely on proper parking position to turn, slow down, stop, and shut
down the engines. It also leads aircrafts by the Follow- me car to proceed to the VIP stand, taxiway &
runway while the incoming & outgoing time of the Aircraft.

Marshallers are also aerobridge operators which entails connecting (PBB) the (Passenger Boarding
Bridge) with the designated aircrafts to embark & disembark the passengers from aircrafts. They also
record & transfer financial reports on how many aircrafts parked on the apron.

In line with Ethiopian Strategic move in overcoming the challenges that we faced as a result of the
COVID-19 Pandemic, the marshaller department is working on creating short and long term solution
for parking aircrafts which aren’t flying at this time by following safety rules on the general aviation
apron which is built by EA to overcome shortage of parking area for the aircrafts which are giving service

ወግ ET-Star

ወግ የበአል ስጦታ ሀሉ እያስታወስንህ የምንጠቀምበት ትምህርት ስጠን።’’

መቼም አዲስ አመት ሲመጣ ያለንን ተካፍለን አዲሱን ሰዉየዉም ትንሽ ካሰበ በኃላ ፣’’በህይወት ዘመንህ ሁላ
የምትገለገልበትን ትምህርት እንድሰጥህ የተወሰነ እድሜ-ጊዜ
ቀን መጀመር የተለመደ ነዉና እኔም በአንድ ወቅት የሰማሁትን እፈልጋለሁ።ያሉኝን የከበሩ ንብረቶች ዉሰድና ተጨማሪ ጊዜ
ግዛልኝ።’’ ብሎ መለሰለት ።
‘ተረት’ ማካፈል ወደድሁ ።የስጦታ ትንሽ የለዉምና እንደ በአል
ጠያቂውም በመገረም ‘’የዚህን አለም ዉድ ነገሮች
ስጦታ ይቆጠርልኝ። ብንጠቀም ጊዜን መግዛት እንዴት ይቻላል?’’ ብሎ መለሰለት
።
ዘመን ሲቀየር፣ሁላችንም በተስፋ ብሩህ ነገዎችን
‘’አየህ!በማንኛውም ዋጋ መግዛት የማትችለው ነገር ቢኖር
በማለም ቢሆንልን፣ቢሳካልን ብለን እንደ ፍላጎታችን ጊዜ መሆኑን ካወቅክ በቂ ነው።ሀብት፣ክብር፣ስኬት እና
ታላቅነት በጊዜ ዉስጥ የሚገኙ መልካም ፍሬዎች ናቸው።እነዚህ
እናቅዳለን፤እንመኛለን።ዳር የሌለዉ ምኞታችን እና ሁሉ ተግባራዊ የሚሆኑት ጊዜ ሲኖርህ ብቻ ነዉ።ጊዜ ከሌለህ
ይመክናሉ።የጊዜ ዋጋ ይበልጥ የሚገባህ እንደእኔ ወድቀህ
ረቂቅ ህልማችን ዛሬና ትላንት አልበቃ ብሎት ነገን በምናብ ስትቀር እና ነገን የማየት ተስፋህ በመነመነበት ሰአት ነዉና ጤነኛ
ሆነህ ዛሬ ላይ ስለደረስክ አመስግን።እድለኛ ሆነህ የነገዋን
ያስጨብጠናል።ተማሪዉ-ለትምህርቱ፣ነጋዴዉ- ጠዋት ካየህ፣ምሬትህን እና ተቆጥረው የማያውቁ መከራዎችን
መዘርዘር ትተህ አመስግነህ አዲሱን ቀን ተቀበል ።
ለወረቱ፣ሰራተኛዉ-በስራው ለማደግ፣ያላገባው-
ተጨማሪ ቀናቶች የሚሰጡህ ትላንት ያሰናከሉህን ፈተናዎች
ለማግባት፣ያገባው -ለመዉለድ፣የወለደው -ለማስተማር እየቆጠርክ ዛሬን እንደትላንት እንድትኖር ሳይሆን፣መሰናክሎቹን
በጥበብ አስወግደህ እንድታልፍ ነዉና በጥንቃቄ
፣ያስተማረው -ለማስመረቅ ፣የወደቀዉ-ለመነሳት እለፋቸዉ።ያለፉት ስህተቶች የምትማርባቸዉ እንጂ እለት-
እለት እየመነዘርክ የምትገደብባቸዉ መሆን የለባቸውም ።አዲስ
፣የተነሳዉ-ለመራመድ ፣የታመመዉ-ለመዳን ፣የታሰረዉ- ቀን-አዲስ አመት ግኡዝ ነገሮችን እየቆጠሩ ከመጨመር በላይ
ለመማሪያና ለመስተካከያ የሚሰጡ በረከቶች ናቸዉና መልካም
ለመፈታት ፣ያጣዉ-ለማግኘት ፣ያገኘዉ-ለመጨመር ስራባቸዉ።’’ብሎ ነገረዉ።

፣የጨመረዉ-ለመቆለል፣የቆለለዉ-ለማትረፍረፍ፣ያዘነው- እኛም ዛሬ እድለኛ ሆነን አዲስ ቀን ተጨምሮልናል።ትላንት
ያለፍንባቸዉ አንገጫጋጭ እና አስቸጋሪ መንገዶችን ለመደልደል
ለመደሰት ፣የወፈረዉ-ለመቀነስ ፣የቀነሰዉ- የተሰጠ አዲስ ቀን ነዉ።እንድንኮራረፍ እና እንድንቃቃር ያደረጉንን
ልዩነቶች ለማጥበብ የተጨመረልን አዲስ አመት ነዉና አመስግነን
ለመወፈር፣የኮሰሰዉ-ለመክበር፣ ያንቀላፋዉ-ለመንቃት... እንቀበል።ያሰብነዉ የሚሳካበት አመት ይሁንልን።መልካም
አዲስ አመት ።
ሌላም ሌላም እንደ ፍላጎታችን እና እንደ ደረጃችን

እንመኛለን፤ፍላጎታችንን ለማሳካት ሩጫችንንም እንጀምራለን።

ማቀድና የተሻሉ ነገሮችን ለማግኘት መመኘት መልካም
ቢሆንም የዛሬዋን ቀን በልዩ እድል ስላገኘን አመስጋኝ መሆን
አለብን ።ምክንያቱም ትላንት አብረውን የነበሩ-ዛሬን ያላዩ ብዙ
አሉና ።ብዙዎች ደሞ አሉ- ዛሬ ላይ በአልጋ ላይ ዉለዉ
በትላንት ጉብዝናቸዉ በትዝታ እየኖሩ ነገን ለማየት በመነመነ
ተስፋ ዉስጥ የሚኖሩ ።አዲስ አመት በመጣ ቁጥር ሁሌም
የማስታዉሰዉ ተረት መሰል ወግ ይታወሰኛል።

በዱሮ ጊዜነዉ አሉ፣በአንድ ከተማ ዉስጥ በስኬቱ
እና በሀብቱ ብዛት በከተማዋ ነዋሪዎች ሁሉ የተከበረና የታወቀ
አንድ ሰዉ ነበር ።ይህ ሰዉ በአስተዋይነቱ እና በምክር
ለጋሽነቱ በወዳጅ ዘመዶቹ ሁሉ ይወደድ ነበር ።የወጣትነት
እድሜዉን ሀገር እየተሻገረ ሲነግድ ስላሳለፈ፣በርካታ የህይወት
ልምዶችን ከሀብት እና ከንብረት በላይ አካብቷል።መፍትሔ
ፈልገው ለሚቀርቡት ሁሉ ያለስስት እየጨለፈ እና እየሰፈረ በልክ
በልካቸዉ የሚሰጥ ባህረ-መፍትሄቸው ነበር።

ይህ ሰው በእርጅና ዘመኑ በአንዱ ቀን በጠና ይታመምና
በአልጋ ላይ ይዉላል።በጉብዝና እድሜዉ ያካበታቸው
የከበሩ ሀብቶች እና ንብረቶች የቀደመ ጤናውን ሊመልሱለት
አልቻሉም ።ወዳጆቾቹ በዙሪያው ከበው እየተፈራረቁ
ያስታምሙታል፤ያጫዉቱታል።ብዙዎቹ ደሞ ከአንደበቱ
የሚፈሰውን ከማር የጣፈጠ መልካም ንግግሮቹን ከበው
ያጣጥማሉ።

ከማለፉ በፊት በአንዱ ቀን ከወዳጆቹ አንዱ እንዲህ ሲል
ጠጋ ብሎ ጠየቀው ፣’’አንት ጥበበኛ ሰዉ በህይወት ዘመናችን
