Continuing Education

Landscape architecture is a licensed profession in Connecticut. Through education, 101
training and examination, licensed landscape architects are qualified and competent to
render professional landscape architectural services in a manner that will protect the
public health, safety and welfare.

Landscape architects in the State of Connecticut are required to participate in con-
tinuing education programs in order to maintain licensure, as established by Public Act
97-174. Regulations require each licensed landscape architect to obtain 24 continuing
education units (CEUs) within each two-year period.

CTASLA strongly believes in the value of continuing education, and we make it a part
of our mission to provide opportunities for our members, peer professionals, and our
friends in the green industries to learn about design trends, materials, new technologies,
and best practices. The following pages reflect on our educational offerings during 2015.

Plugs and Container-Grown Plants
in Landscape Design

Prides Corner Farms / Lebanon
August 4, 2015
4.25 PDH/HSW

“Plugs and Container-Grown Plants in Landscape
Design” was held in the big tent at Prides Corner
Farms’ beautiful arboretum, on a hill overlooking the
nursery. Tours of the nursery were provided at breaks
throughout the program.

Our first speaker, Claudia West, Ecological Sales
Manager of North Creek Nurseries, highlighted what it
takes to grow quality plugs and how to specify plugs
to ensure a successful project. Wes Wazni, ASLA,
Senior Associate at Towers|Golde, LLC, followed, pro-
viding an in-depth look at how plugs can be used to
improve a project and also when they might not work
as planned, and why.

dynamic talk on the successes and failures of working
with plugs and container shrubs. During the question-
and-answer portion they provided an informative
and revealing discussion of the interactions they
sometimes have as the installers of projects when
the designer is not part of the installation team. Dr.
Mandy Bayer of UMass provided valuable information
on how plants are affected by being grown in con-
tainers, and the implications that has in the landscape.

After a delightful lunch and some tours, Tom Rathier
of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station
gave a slide show on what common plant diseases
and issues look like and which are detrimental to plant
survival in the landscape. The final session included
all the speakers along with Mike Emmons, Senior
Manager of Prides Corner Farms, and was a very
rousing hands-on question-and-answer period!

Italian Center of Stamford
September 16, 2015
4.25 PDH/HSW

CTASLA’s Residential Design Expo was again a success
for the fourth year in a row. “Day & Night” was the
theme for the 2015 event, relocated to the spacious
and conveniently located Italian Center of Stamford.
Nearly 100 landscape architects and affiliated pro-
fessionals attended, enjoying educational lectures,
product demonstrations, and networking oppor-
tunities. This year’s topics included Using Trees for
Architectural Effect, Structures in the Landscape,
Tree Houses, Fire Elements for Outdoor Residential
Rooms, Integrating LED Into Landscape Lighting
Design, and a landscape lighting demonstration on
the Italian Center grounds, capping off the evening.

Darryl Newman of Planters Choice, LLC started us
off, discussing trees for both formal and
natural designs, highlighting resilience,
branching architecture, and varieties
of specimens for outdoor rooms. The
landscape structures lecture by John
Conte, ASLA of Conte & Conte, LLC
focused on styles and sighting
of pergolas, decks, gazebos,
as well as a chicken coop! His
lecture included a slideshow
of photos and 3D models that
provided much inspiration.
The third lecture before dinner,
a talk on modern tree house
design and construction by
James McCarthy of the Tree
House Brothers, woke up the inner
child in everyone who attended.

After dinner, as the day approached
sunset, guests enjoyed a creative pre-
sentation by Brian Cossari, ASLA of
Hoffman Landscapes on the many varieties
of outdoor fire elements. People enjoyed a wonderful
talk and a presentation filled with new inspiration
for their clients’ projects. Brooke Silber of Jan &

grounds of the Italian Center of Stamford, discussing
and showing first-hand impressive lighting design
and available technology, comparing and contrasting
options for different effects and budgets. Everyone
walked away in awe of the amazing lighting display,
