Dedications

Dedicated to

Reizl Malka Hupert

A woman who has opened my eyes to a higher committment to learning
Torah and communicating to the Jewish People. Her father, Joseph Hupert, a
survivor, instilled in her the holy task of keeping the memory of the Holocaust
alive for future generations. A student at EYAHT, she has taught at prestigious
institutions, including Midrash Rachel. As a member of the Carlebach Chevra,
she became part of his inner circle, accompanying him with a select group, on
a trip to Poland and, at the end of his life, flying to Israel for one day to bury
him at the time of his death. Reizl Malka has introduced me to a world of
Chassidic music and story songs unique to the ways of Reb Shlomo Carlebach,
z”l. It is all of these facets that have made her a diamond of Jewish cultural,
halachic and creative clarity in my journey to fulfill my part in the collective
legacy of the Jewish people. Thank you!

Thank You

To my children

Shmuel, Sarah, Mayer, Gitty and Heshy

my biggest fans, who grew up believing that creativity
is a holy task to be honed and developed.

To my mother,

Lynne Stone

who has always believed in all
my creative pursuits

To my creative partner
and vocalist extraordinaire,

Shloimy Bluth

Who has brought my ideas,
lyrics and music to life.

For six months
they had travelled,
Port to port —
Now all alone...

Sixty Jewish refugees,
At sea without a home.

Not far in the distance,
Moving closer everyday,
A German nazi war ship
moved steadily on its way.

With little time
And no hope left,
A mother held her child,
In the far-off corner of the boat,
As she sat prepared to die,

When suddenly the child’s eyes
Were open with a glow...

And the little girl
began to speak...
Her eyes were filled
with hope

“Mommy, mommy,”
said the little girl,
Last night I had
a dream,
That we built the
greatest candle stick,
That the world
had ever seen...

And it lit the world
for Shabbat,
Mommy dear,
Can it be true,
One last Shabbat,
Can we celebrate,
Just like we used to do?

The child’s words
spread from ear to ear,
In their hearts
the people knew,
That as the German ship
moved closer,
There was one thing
left to do...

For soon they all would perish by the nazi’s wicked hand,
It would be far greater for a Jew to die “L’shem Hashem.”

So they cut the sail down,
from the staff...

And coated it with wax...

And stretched
that giant candle wick,
Along the boat’s tall mast.

They stood on deck
as sunset fell,
The captain lit the top.

Then the little girl said a blessing,
“L’hadlik Ner Shel Shabbat.”

Soon the sky was glowing white,
Engulfed in purple haze.

The boat became their candle stick,
The ship became its flames.

Their ragged clothes were silken robes,
Their souls had broken free.

They danced and danced
into the night,
As they sang “L’cha Dodi.”

And sunrise changed to evening dusk,
As they spent their day in prayer,
They thanked Hashem for one last
Shabbos day that they could share.

But as the Shabbat slowly ended,
A sweet scent filled the air
The candle’s flames flickered out...
And the boat just disappeared.

As the sun goes down on a friday night,
As you look out to the sea,
There’s a silhouette of one lone ship,
And if you listen carefully,
You can hear the songs
they sang that night,
Just sixty refugees...

And a little girl who has found a home,
Aboard the S.S. Shabbat Queen

Reuven A. Stone, best known for creating e
Torah Tots, has written this book, based on the
lyrics from a song that he and co-writer, Shloimy
Bluth produced on their album, “ e Next Gen-
eration”. His original illustrations, brought to life
by artist Maricica Radovici, lend a fabled quality
to engage a young child and introduce important
concepts in an innocent safe environment,
where a child is allowed to explore the challeng-
es of faith, even when hope is all but gone.
