Giriş SAYFA 01 Türk Edebiyatında Romanın Yeri ve Gelişimi Öncelikle roman nedir? Roman, genellikle düzyazı biçiminde yazılan kurgusal, görece uzun, insanın (ya da insan özellikleri atfedilen varlıkların) deneyimlerini bir olay örgüsü içinde aktaran ve genellikle kitap halinde basılan bir edebî türdür. Günümüzde çok gelişmiş ve derinlikli bir edebî tür hâline gelmiş olan roman, 15. yüzyılda Fransa’da ortaya çıkmıştır. 16. yüzyılın sonlarına doğru kaleme alınan Cervantes’in “Don Kişot” adlı eseri, dünya edebiyatında roman türünün ilk başarılı örneği kabul edilir. Türk edebiyatında roman, 19. yüzyılda ortaya çıkan bir yazım türüdür. Roman, Tanzimat'la başlayan batılılaşma sürecinin bir parçası olarak Türk edebiyatına girmiş olup, Fransız edebiyatından eserler başta olmak üzere ilk Türkçe örnekleri çeviri eserlerde gözlemlenmiştir. Romanın tür olarak Türk edebiyatında görülmesi, Telamak'ı Fransızcadan çeviren Tahtaví'nın, Arapça tercümesinden ,Yusuf Kamil Paşa’nın yaptığı, Fenelon’un Telemak adlı eserinin çevirisi Tercüme-i Telemak ile olmuştur. İlk Türk romanı ise Şemsettin Sami’den Taaşşuk-ı Talat ve Fitnat'tır. Taaşşuk kelimesi Osmanlıca da aşık olma, sevdalanma anlamına gelir. Kitap günümüz Türkçesine Talat ve Fitnat'ın aşkı olarak çevrilmiştir. Osmanlı yazarları tarafından yazılan ilk romanlar, genellikle oldukça zayıftır. Bunda romanın tür olarak batıdan alınmasının büyük payı vardır. Bu çeşit bir düz yazı geleneği olmayan Türk yazarları özellikle karakter yaratmak konusunda yüzeysel kalmışlar ve karikatüre benzeyen tipler ortaya çıkarmışlardır. İlk yazılan romanlar, kimi zaman neredeyse birebir olacak şekilde, batılı örneklerin taklitleri olarak görülebilir. Bu ilk dönem yazarları daha çok Fransız Romantizm akımını örnek almışlardır. Bu nedenle dönemin romanlarında daha çok romantik aşklar ve yanlış batılılaşma ana tema olarak ön plana çıkmaktadır. Dönemin bazı önemli romanları şunlardır: Recaizade Mahmud Ekrem’in Araba Sevdası , Namık Kemal’in İntibah’ı ve Ahmet Mithat Efendi’nin Felatun Bey'le Rakım Efendi’si.
Giriş SAYFA 02 Servet-i Fünûn edebiyatı döneminde ilk usta romanlar ve usta yazarlar kendilerini gösterdi. "Sanat sanat içindir" tezini savunan bu yazarlar aşk ve acıma gibi konuları işledi. Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil bu dönemin en önemli romancısı sayılır. Uşaklıgil'in “Mai ve Siyah” adlı romanı batı tekniğine uygun ilk realist roman olarak kabul edilir. 1910’dan sonra milli duyguların ağır basmasıyla birlikte Genç Kalemler dergisi çevresinde Türkçülük akımı gelişti. Milli romanların yazılması bu dönemde başladı. Halide Edip Adıvar’ın Vurun Kahpeye, Reşat Nuri Güntekin’in “Çalıkuşu” romanları bu dönemin örneklerindendir. Cumhuriyet döneminin ilk romanları ulusçuluk akımını oluşturmuştur. Çoğunlukla Kurtuluş Savaşı'nı konu edinen romanları bu ilk örnekleri ise, ulusal modernleşme hareketinin etkisiyle, "köy romanı" takip etmiştir. 1960 sonrasında sol eğilimlerin artmasıyla toplumcu romanlar yazılmaya başlanmıştır. Gerçekçi akımın etkisi 12 Eylül Darbesine kadar devam etmiştir. 1980 sonrası entelektüel durulmanın etkisi uzun bir süre devam etmiş, ancak 1990'larda daha özgün romanlar yeniden belirmeye başlamıştır.
