Welcome Message
Delegates, Presenters, Guests and Partners,
It is a great privilege to welcome you to the 2016 Summer Youth Assembly at the United Nations!
We would like to thank our lead endorsers, His Excellency Oh Joon and the Permanent Mission of the Republic
of Korea to the United Nations, and His Excellency Virachai Plasai and Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of
Thailand. We also thank Her Excellency Simona Mirela-Miculescu, Representative of the Secretary-General
and Head of UN Office in Belgrade, for once again joining us as the Honorary Chair.
We are at a crucial period in history— 2016 is the first full year the UN Sustainable Development Goals have
been in place. This agenda poses a great challenge to us all, but especially to you, the largest generation of
youth the world has ever known. As Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said, “We are the first generation that
can end poverty, the last that can end climate change.
This work and this forum have a storied history. Your presence here is the result of the contributions of
delegates that preceded you and to the dedication of tens of thousands of committed world citizens, the UN
family, and civil society. All of these and many more have participated in working toward the implementation
of the Sustainable Development Goals.
It’s our wish that during these three short days you will learn about the Sustainable Development Goals, their
present status, and your role in achieving them. This new plan of action for people, the planet, and prosperity
for all is at the core of what we hope the Youth Assembly program will provide. You bring a wealth of
information, resources, and skills with you. With your collective knowledge and experience, and with the help
of stakeholders worldwide, you can transform visions of a peaceful and sustainable world into action.
Set goals for yourself. Ask how you can impact international policy, how you can foster cultural exchange,
how you can expand dialogue, and how you can effect lives by developing pragmatic solutions to global
challenges. Your attendance at this assembly already signifies a certain commitment, a commitment which
we hope carries you into a lifetime of progress. We hope the ideas and relationships you form here will
change your communities, your world, and empower you to engage, lead, and shape tomorrow.
Sincerely,
David Hill Yin-Chu Jou
