Brown vs Board
When Brown tried to enroll his daughter linda
to an all white school, and was denied
admission, and he decided to sue. The district
court ruled against him and in favor of the
board of education. However when more cases
like these popped up, that's when they tried to
end this.
William B. Hartsfield
William B. Hartsfield was a mayor who served 6 times! He is known for his major
role in the civil rights movement, and racial tolerance. He was instrumental in the
opening of atlanta's first airport in 1925. He helped with integration, and civil
rights in general. The Hartsfield Jackson International airport was named partly
after him, for his major part in the building process. He also extended the
expressway system, tripled atlantas size, and more.
Ivan Allen Jr
Ivan Allen was an
Atlanta Mayor, and
fought for Civil Rights.
He helped improve the city by removing “colored”
signs, and desegregated the buildings cafeteria
thoroughly the city. He also brought the Hawks,
Falcons, and Braves into the city. He also played
an important role in building Interstate 285, and
M.A.R.T.A.
March On Washington
The March on Washington was a protest for jobs and freedom at the washington
monument where over 200000 gathered around. Martin Luther King gave his
infamous “I have a Dream Speech” This protest was huge! It was the largest
demonstration in the country's history.
Martin Luther King Jr He was assassinated in Tennessee, where
he was to lead a protest. He also a won a
Martin Luther King Jr was a civil rights nobel peace prize for his doings.

president of the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference, an organization
formed to provide new leadership for the
civil rights movement. He was arrested
and assaulted for his doing multiples
times, but that didn't stop him from
fighting for equality.
Andrew Young Andrew Young served as a
congressman, mayor and
ambassador of georgia. He was a
named ambassador to the nation
by Jimmy Carter. He helped
organize the Southern Christian
Leadership Congress, and was
the first African American
congressman since
reconstruction.
Lester Maddox
Lester Maddox gained his recognition when he opened his Patrick Cafeteria
where he stated he will only serve whites and never serve blacks. He even chased
african americans out of his way with a pistol! In his restaurant he featured
segregationist literature, and more racist things.
Maynard Jackson In 1973, Maynard Jackson won the mayoral
election, and he was the first black mayor
of Atlanta. While in his time in office, he
fought for civil rights, improved racial
equality in the city, and hired more blacks
for work. He also expanded the airport
terminal which is why the word “Jackson”
is in the Hartsfield Jackson international
airport.
John Lewis
John Lewis was also an instrumental part in the civil rights movement. He
became a chairman for the SNCC, and was another keynote speaker at the march
on washington. He was elected to the atlanta city council in 1981,and in 1986 was
elected to the U.S congress.
Jimmy Carter-Senator Jimmy Carter was born
in Plains Georgia
As State Senator, Jimmy
Carter advocated for
Education and served as
the chairman of the
senate education
committee. He also
encouraged integration.
He was re elected to the
state senate for a second
term in 1964.
Jimmy Carter-Governor
In 1966, Jimmy Carter was interested in running for governor, but ended up
getting 3rd place. However that didn't stop him and in 1970 he ran again and
got elected. He focused on education, health and justice systems as
governor, and helped women and minorities.

Jimmy Carter got the
Democratic nomination for
president in 1976. During his
time as president, his
achievements include Camp
David peace accords between
Egypt and Israel, and the
“SALT” (Strategic Arms
Limitation Treaty), with the
soviet union.
Jimmy Carter-Past President
After His loss during the 1980
presidential election, Jimmy
Carter spread awareness for the
Habitat for Humanity program,
anf founded the Carter Center.
He was also inducted to the Georgia
Writers Hall of Fame in 2006. He
wrote several books.
Albany Movement
The Albany Movement was
a movement to protest
against segregation
policies of the city. Initially
this movement was not
supported , and there was
resistance from white
people. Also, black middle
class did not support the
protest. This led to 500
protesters in jail.
1966 Olympics In 1996, Atlanta hosted
the 1996 Olympic
games! This heavily
boosted georgia's
economy. The
population grew,
atlanta got recognized,
cities grew, and the
games generated at
least 5.1 billion dollars.
With the increase in
population, led to
traffic concerns and
housing market decline.
