This was a beautiful presentation that is organized annually
by Veterans Club President, Tom Buckton. Although state
workers technically had the day off, many dignitaries were
present as observers to this event. The Lake Providence
Singers sang patriotic songs and many of our own Veterans
were honored by standing as the song from their branch of
military service was played. SageGuard Financial sponsored
an elegant reception just prior to the event, with all the
breakfast treats you could imagine. Owner of SageGuard,

submitted by Tom Buckton, President DWLP Veterans Club
This year’s Veterans Day Ceremony was another great Those in attendance were treated to a rousing rendition of
success. The ballroom was full of our neighbors who military and patriotic songs by our own Lake Providence

City Councilmen Brian Abston and Ray justice as well as
MJPD Chief Hambrick and MJFD Chief Luffman. The Veteran’s Club would like to thank all those who
attended. We appreciate you. Thanks for your service. ◄
Sageguard Financial hosted the reception before
the ceremony to provide snacks, orange juice,
coffee and water. DJ Johnson, himself a veteran,
has hosted this reception every year. Sageguard’s
participation is appreciated and valued.
The ceremony started promptly at 11 AM in a
traditional Navy manner with the ringing of the
time, six bells. The ringing of the time is how
time was kept on sailing ships, and still continues
on NAVY ships today. Each half hour is one bell.
The ringing starts at 8 AM with eight bells to
signal the end of the morning watch.
After the invocation by Col. Jim Rennell, the Resident Tom Buckton and Captain Ted Heflin.
Vanderbilt University NROTC Midshipmen
presented the colors in a very professional
manner. This was followed by a very moving
and relevant speech by CAPT Heflin, the
Commanding Officer of the NROTC. He
very thoughtfully weaved current events with
the NAVY core values to explain why he has
dedicated his life to service.

Tell me a little bit about your adult coloring experience.
I really like the adult coloring class. It’s relaxing, I don’t have
to think, it allows me to construct blends of beautiful colors,
and we share ideas while having fun with our creative process.
Have you always been interested in art?
I first got involved with ceramics, then flower arrangements,
cake decorating, now adult coloring class led by our
wonderful instructor Linda Holloman.
Walk me through your creative process.
My creative process is purely random in nature - I just go
with the flow until the blend of colors start coming together.
Before you know it something beautiful appears without
having to put a whole lot of effort into it. I believe the

chronicles the remarkable life journey of Dr. Ming Wang, a world-renowned
laser eye surgeon, philanthropist and Kiwanis Nashvillian of the Year.
As a teenager, Ming fought valiantly to escape one of history’s darkest eras – China’s Cultural
Revolution – during which millions of innocent youth were deported to remote areas to face a
life sentence of poverty and hard labor. Through his own tenacity and his parents’ tireless
efforts to provide a chance of freedom for their son, Ming eventually made his way to America
with $50 in his pocket and an American dream in his heart, where against all odds he would
earn a PhD in laser physics and graduate magna cum laude with the highest honors from
Harvard Medical School and MIT. He embraced his Christian faith and tackled one of the most
important questions of our time – Are faith and science friends or foes? – which led to his
invention of a breakthrough biotechnology to restore sight.
To date, Dr. Wang has performed over 55,000 eyeprocedures and has treated patients from
nearly every state in the U.S. and from over 55 countriesworldwide. He is considered the
“doctor’s doctor,” as he has operated on over 4,000 physicians. Dr. Wang has published 8
textbooks and a paper in the worldrenowned journal Nature, holds several U.S. patents and
performed the world’s first laser artificial cornea implantation. He is currently the only
surgeon in the state who performs3DLASIK (18+),3DLaser Kamra (45+), 3D Forever Young
Lens Surgery (50+) and 3D Laser Cataract Surgery (60+). He established a nonprofit
foundation which provides sight restoration surgeries for indigent patients free-of-charge.
This is a story of one man’s inspirational journey, of turning fear, poverty, persecution and
prejudice into healing and love for others. It demonstrates how focus, determination, humility
and profound faith can inspire a life that, in turn, impacts that of countless others.
All proceeds donated to the Wang Foundation, a 501c(3) non-profit charity FromDarknessToSight.com
