For this edition of the Newsletter the theme is Quality and Service.
I would say that we all have a pretty good concept of these nouns.
Just to make sure, I decided to start with google for the true defini-
tion of quality and service... Quality: The standard of something
as measured against other things of a similar kind, the degree of
excellence of something. Service: The action of helping someone.
The definitions are right on point. I would have to say that quality
and service probably are the pillars that mean the most to me and
can truly define your potential for success.
The definition of quality mentions the standard of something as
measured against other things of similar kind. I am always com-
paring and evaluating our overall quality and service, the overall

experience that we provide versus other entities and competition.
I might be visiting another wellness center, our on vacation or just
a trip to the grocery store, I always want to know how we stand up
and compare to others. Now a day everyone wants the best qual-
ity and experience for their buck. I recently completed a vacation
in Europe. On the back side of our time away, we had a few days
in Scotland and Saint Andrews. A trip to and a round of golf at
the legendary home of golf St. Andrews has been on the bucket
list for a long time. Fortunately, my wife also plays golf so this
trip was very special for her as well. So, while at St. Andrews the
feeling that this is a special place hits you hard as soon as you arrive in the town. I have heard nothing but
great things about the town and the people and how wonderful you are treated at the home of golf. So of course, I
had my eyes wide open and constantly making those comparisons of quality and service and how the town’s people
treat their visitors and what are the secrets to make sure their guests have the best experience possible. I must say
that the people of St. Andrews are truly wonderful, very helpful and friendly and willing to do what they can to ensure
your best experience possible, but not everything in St. Andrews is perfect. There are issues, booking problems, bad
weather, (luckily not while we were there) lost luggage (that one did happen to us). Our luggage situation did throw
us for a loop that we did not expect. I figured here is a great opportunity to see what type of assistance, solutions
and suggestions the towns people would come up with for their guests. I did share our luggage story with a hand full
of folks that we encountered. From Marion our B&B owner to Meredith in the golf pro shop to Shamus our bartender
and the crew at the local fish & Chip shop, everyone was delighted to offer any assistance that would help us. I
was truly amazed by the outpouring of help and solutions. In short time our new friends armed us with a plan to get
us what we needed to be prepared for our next day 7:20 am tee time. The overall willingness to assist by so many
made the lost luggage issue seem like a minor inconvenience. I thought to myself this has to be too good to be true.
There has to be a weak link or a soft underbelly when it comes to delivering top shelf consistent service and quality.
So, I figure there has to be one service group of employees in this town that is not pulling their weight in the quality
and service department. Being a golfer, I know that Caddies can be known for their less than stellar personalities,
so off I went to talk to a few caddies. I was walking and talking to a few caddies from the caddy shack up to the first
tee of the historic Old Course of St. Andrews. So, I decided to ask one of the caddies a question. I said, “Angus…..
you must get tired of putting up with rude obnoxious crummy tourist golfers that keep hitting golf ball after golf ball in
to the course bushes, expecting you to go in and fetch their golf ball for them, how do you put up with that?” Angus
replied with this great Scottish brogue, “George it is my job and no one forces me to do it and I love what I do. Golfers
are a pain in the arse but every golfer deserves my best every day”. The remarks from Angus were truly his and not
what I expected. Besides a wonderful visit and playing the round of golf of my life at St. Andrews, I got a little life les-
son and useful reminder of quality and service from a friendly caddy to take home with me.

TO KNOW

Guest Passes
UNC Wellness Centers offer daily guest passes at a rate of $10 per visit to anyone in the community. Al-
though the guest fee is low (some facilities don’t even allow guests) in comparison to other fitness facilities
in the area, we believe it is a great marketing tool that helps brings awareness to our centers in the surround-
ing communities and it also gives us an opportunity to showcase our staff, services and amenities. Increas-
ing the fee would possibly eliminate the chance to connect with these individuals. Additionally, creating
long-term relationships with just a small percentage of these guests outweighs the incremental revenue we
would receive by increasing our guest fees.

However, we do monitor the overall numbers of guests that come into the facility each year and we would
look at making adjustments if we felt it was negatively impacting the experience of our members. Over the
last 4 years, the overall number of guest visits at the NW Cary facility has remained consistent while the over-
all number of guest visits at the Meadowmont facility has decreased slightly.

Private Yoga, Yoga Therapy, & Thai Massage
Private yoga, yoga therapy and Thai massage are all listed under the “Eval/Yoga/Thai” tab in CSI Scheduler
at Meadowmont, since they all use the same room. Janet Thompson and Sam Sather are doing yoga therapy
sessions and Robin Zwilling, Alex Strano, Doris Alexander Buley, Janet and Sam all do private yoga. These are
rung up as personal training sessions. 90 minute sessions will need a regular session and a 30 minute session
at POS. Thai massage is a specialty massage for pricing: Alex Strano and Michelle Treffer will do Thai mas-
sage.

Equipment Upgrades at Meadowmont
In late August 4 Life Fitness Selectorized machines will be replaced with newer and updated versions of
themselves. The Seated Row, Shoulder Press, Lat Pulldown and Pec Fly/Rear Delt machines will be upgraded.
During this replacement, two additional machines will be removed to make space for adding an additional
Olympic Flat Bench Press. The bench press has been a heavily requested item by members and in order to
fit another, we will need to remove a couple of machines. These machines will include the Life Fitness pull-
over and the Plate-loaded Hammer Strength wide chest press. The Olympic Flat Bench press will be installed
either at the same time as the others or shortly thereafter.

Massage & Personal Training Price Increase
Prices for massage therapy and personal training went up on July 1st, so you should have noticed the new
brochures around the buildings. Please take a look to become familiar with those offerings and let Kathy
DeBlasio know if you have questions.

Employee Benefits
As UNC Health Care employees, we are eligible to receive a number of benefits ranging from paid time off to
retirement to discounted programs, services, and tickets. On Friday, September 29th, UNC Health Care will
host the Employee Benefits Fair from 11 am-2 pm in the Concourse of UNC Hospitals. Open enrollment is sched-
uled in October. This event will be helpful if you have questions about our benefits and options as there will be
vendors available to help educate us on our options. If you have any questions or would like to know more

1 Pedal for Peds

3 The UNC Division of Pediatric Hematology Oncology is proud to present the
8th Annual Pedal for Peds Bike Ride on Saturday, September 23, 8:00 am-
6 12:00 pm at UNC Wellness Centers at Northwest Cary. This cause is near to
hearts as it is a day of celebration dedicated to children battling cancer and
blood diseases. We honor those that have survived cancer and take time to
remember those that have lost their loved ones. The funds raised from this
event specifically benefit the families and caregivers that have been or are a
part of our UNC Hospitals’ Pediatric Hematology Oncology division.

Triathlons

We will be hosting 2 triathlons this Fall. One at our NW Cary Location and
one at our Meadowmont location. The Tarheel Youth Triathlon will take place
at the NW Cary facility on Sunday, September 24. Signups and info can be
found at: http://www.kidstrinc.org. Secondly, we will be hosting the Ramb-
lin’ Rose Women’s Only Triathlon on Sunday, October 8th at Meadowmont.

Heart Walk

Join UNC Health Care and the American Heart Association for the 2017
Triangle Heart Walk on Sunday, October 1st. The Walk is the American Heart
Association’s mission in action. This annual celebration promotes physical
activity and heart healthy living in a fun, family, and dog-friendly environ-
ment. Let’s make an impact on the fight against heart disease and stroke at
this local walk with a large presence of UNC Health Care teammates, family,
and friends! Activities begin at 12:30 pm at the PNC Arena. The 1-mile and
3-mile walks begin at 2:00 pm. We look forward to seeing you all on October
1st!

Employees of the Quarter

Please join us in congratulating Tori Hall and Gabe
Wical for being moved into Fitness Team Lead
roles for their respective facilities, Meadowmont
and NW Cary. These two have shown leadership
from day one and have taken initiative on many
programs since joining our team.

Tori has become a Certified Emergency Oxygen
Instructor, developed and implemented our 30
minutes Express Sessions, become a swim men-
tor for new team members, and developed many
additional fitness clinics for our team to teach,
among other things.

Gabe has also become a Certified Emergency
Oxygen Instructor, drove the implementation of
our computer and online scheduling system for
use at the fitness desk, and performs a majority
of our equipment maintenance tasks at NW Cary,
among many others.

The list of items here far underscores their value
to this team, to our wellness centers and to the
UNCH organization. Thank you both for you in-
credible team work, attitude and leadership.

FitLinxx-Activelinxx Transition

Activelinxx, the new company that has bought out
and taken over FitLinxx, will be deactivating the
old Fitlinxx Website on August 15th. All users of
FitLinxx will need to create or transfer their Fitlinxx
account to the Activelinxx.com account by this
date. Instructions on how to do this will be sent
to all users however, our Fitness Team can assist
those members at the Fitness Desk that may need
additional help.
