Opening Prayer

Mrs. Kandy Harkin, Chaplaincy Leader
Gracious and Loving God,
We ask for your almighty hand to be upon our graduates as they and their families celebrate this grand
milestone.
May they find comfort from our community’s continued embrace and support as they journey through
life.
We acknowledge that they have been richly blessed with many gifts: material goods, friendships and
affection, and boundless possibilities.
May they always be grateful for what they have been given, and may they constantly use their gifts to the
fullest potential, for our benefit, and the benefit of our world.
May they be aware of their many blessings and may they take to heart the words of your Gospel
message, and live it daily.
Grant, that from this day on, that their lives will be filled with goodness and success.
Enable them to stay true to their dreams for your greater glory, to discern what is right, good and just,
and to use their gifts wisely and in service to others.
Empower them to walk into the future with faith, hope, and great love guided by your light so that they
may use their talents to, in the words of St. Ignatius Loyola, “Go forth and set the world on fire.”
Grace be to them, grace be to us all.
Amen

Loyola School Crest Commentary

READER 1 - Layan Ajawi

The Crest for St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Secondary School was designed to reflect the
many qualities of life at Loyola and to define the goals of education in our unique community.
At the top of the crest, we see the letters IHS. St. Ignatius of Loyola adopted IHS, meaning
the name of Jesus as his seal of the military Society of Jesus. Today it remains as part of the
identifiable symbol of the Jesuits – the Roman Catholic religious order established by St.
Ignatius. Above these initials, appear THREE NAILS and the CROSS to represent Christ’s
sacrifice for all humanity.
The OAK LEAVES on either side of the Jesuit symbol represent the oak tree, which symbolizes
strength and endurance – qualities which we strive to build in ourselves. Our community,
Oakville, is so named for the mighty oak.
The STAR which binds the oak leaves together represents Jesus Christ, the one whom Ignatius followed and to whom he
points us as we grow in faith and develop our special gifts for the benefit of others – in our family, in our community and in
our world.
The OPEN BIBLE depicts our openness to the Word of God – which is our source and our guide as we make life decisions.
This is the book we will cherish with great reverence all the days of our life.

READER 2 - Ada Onuorah

With the CROSS, we are reminded that everything is not what it seems on the surface. From this great tragedy of Christ’s
passion and death has come the gift of eternal life and salvation for all. We draw our strength from the one who willingly gave
up his life that we might live more fully and share in eternal salvation.
The SUN – an aspect of the Jesuit symbol represents fire and the Christian symbol of zeal – it is interesting to note that the
word “IGNACE” translates as “FIRE”.
At the base of the crest is Ignatius’ key principle which later became the Jesuit motto: In Latin: AD MAJOREM DEI
GLORIAM, meaning “all for the greater glory of God”.
Friends, we are forever bound by our ties to Loyola. We will strive to uphold these symbols of our faith and of our beloved
school – all of these symbols together reflect what Ignatius tried to leave us as his legacy…the awareness that no matter where
life’s paths lead us, all we think, say and do is all…FOR THE GREATER GLORY OF GOD.

On behalf of the Graduating Class of 2020, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have
participated in or contributed to our virtual graduation. Thank you to Father Allen, Pastor of St Matthew’s Parish,
and Associate Pastor Father Joseph Akanbi, for your spiritual guidance as we have celebrated our faith together
and to Father Tim Hingston who is looking down upon us from heaven and sending us his blessing. Thank you to
our Director of Education Mr. Daly and our Superintendent for sending their regards. Thank you to the Loyola
administrative, teaching and support staff for helping us to grow and for making this day a reality. Thank you to
our parents and guardians for traveling this road with us, for being with us both in moments of triumph as well as
moments of struggle. Finally thank you to all those who have worked tirelessly throughout this challenging time to
help us reach the finish line and to make this virtual celebration a reality.
On behalf of Mr. Wong, Mrs. Ellison, Mrs. Morrow, and the entire staff of St Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Secondary
School, Congratulations to our graduating class of 2020!
In closing I leave you with the words of the author Ralph Waldo Emerson, “What lies behind us and what lies before
us are small matters compared to what lies within us.”
Thank you to all students and families who are joining us from here at home and around the world.
Now please enjoy a Loyola tradition which began 17 years ago, a staff reading of Dr. Seuss’ “Oh the Places You’ll
Go”, followed by our graduation slideshow.
Until we meet again.
