Who are we?
The Center for Innovation in STEM Education (CISE) at California State University Dominguez Hills is
proud to partner with Los Angeles Unified School District – Local District South (LDS) to offer schools
a complete, authentic, STEAM Curriculum and instructional experience. The STEAM Lab School focuses
on Science, Technology, Engineering, English Language Development, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM).
Unlike other STEAM experiences, CISE is able to provide students with unique and authentic experi-
ences using its fleet of Mobile Fabrication Labs which is equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
The Mobile Fabrication Lab project is at the forefront of innovative STEAM education. The project
brings STEAM into classrooms and communities and provides participants with access to advanced
fabrication equipment, such as 3D printers, laser cutters, Computer Numerical Control (CNC) routers,
vinyl cutters, vacuum forming machines, and electronic stations, which allow participants to use this
advanced technology and their imagination to create almost anything they dream about.
Our Goals
STEAM Lab School has three key goals:
1. To offer students an unforgettable and exciting learning experience through project-based
learning which will allow students to further develop their 21st Century Skills: critical thinking,
creativity, collaboration, and communication.
2. To inspire young engineers, inventors, artists, and entrepreneurs through the use of fabrication
equipment and exposure to STEAM careers in engineering, computer manufacturing software,
architecture, arts, and science.
3. To provide access to underrepresented populations to STEAM fields.

Information on
the Coronavirus
Coronavirus is a germ. Germs and viruses are so small that
we can’t see them with our eyes. Think about a time when
you had a cold or the flu. Coronavirus acts a lot like that.
We gave it a fancy name: COVID-19. People who get sick
from it can have a fever, a cough, or a hard time getting a
good breath in. Does that sound like a sickness you have
had before? You are probably saying, “YES!”
A special part of our body called the immune system gets in a fight with these germs. Imagine
a football game—one team is your immune system, and the other team is the germ. The teams
are playing ALL the time to protect you.
Coronavirus, the flu, and colds spread by itty bitty drops from
sneezes or coughs. Those teeny tiny little snot boogers can also live
on things we touch for many hours, or until we clean them. The best
thing to do is to stay home with an adult if you are sick and go to
the doctor if you get very sick.
Q: Why are people so scared about Coronavirus?
A: Because it is new, we haven’t had much time to study it with scientists and doctors. We don’t
have any special medicines or shots called vaccines yet. If you feel scared, try to tell yourself that
adults around you are working hard to take care of you, because they are!
Q: Am I going to get Coronavirus? Is my family?
A: We don’t know for sure. It’s like asking, “Am I going to get a cold next week?” You can’t really
know. Not very many kids have gotten sick from Coronavirus. Most of the people that do have it
are sick for a few days and get better at home (just like the flu.) But there are things you CAN do
to help your body win the game!
1
WASH YOUR HANDS with soap and water
many times a day!
This is a good thing to do all the time, because you can help others like little babies and
grandmas or grandpas stay well when you spread less germs around.
• Scrub. Really scrub. Scrub a LOT, LOT. Pretend you are a doctor. Doctors clean every part
around their fingers and squish soap under their nails. They sing songs to make sure they are
cleaning for a long time. You can too!
• Hand Sanitizer is good if you don’t have a place with soap and a sink. But it takes 4 whole
minutes before it will stop the germs and viruses, and good hand washing beats them in just 30
seconds. Washing with soap gets the germs more slippery so that the water will push them
right off your hands. Then you can say, “Bye, bye, germs.”
1. Try hard NOT to touch your face, mouth, & eyes. That’s where a lot of germs get in.
2. Use the “Vampire” when you cough or sneeze: move your arm—the inside of your elbow
part—to catch those teeny tiny snot drops. The Vampire helps because you don’t use the inside
of your arm to touch very many things.
2
germs are everywhere!
The treatment of viruses are more challenging. They are also specific about the area of the body
that they attack. For example, the Coronavirus specifically attacks the respiratory tract which
include your nose, throat, and lungs. Other types of viruses can attack the liver or even the blood.
Common viruses include the flu, rabies, and the common cold. The primary way to prevent infections
caused by viruses is by vaccination.
You can help fight germs and infections too! Simple things
such as washing your hands regularly, avoiding close contact
with people who are sick, and cleaning surfaces that are
touched often can help with getting rid of the bad germs.
The easiest and best way to protect yourself from germs and
most infections is by hand-washing using soap and water. It is
important to wash your hands for about 20 seconds, which is
about as long as it takes to sing the ‘Happy Birthday’ song twice. You should always remember to
wash your hands before eating food, after coughing or sneezing, after using the bathroom, and
after going to public places like the playground or the store. If you are at a place where soap and
water is not available, hand sanitizers can offer protection. Keeping a small bottle of hand
sanitizer with you where ever you go would be a good idea, just in case you need it.
You would not want to spread germs to people around you and get them sick, would you? HAND
When you sneeze or cough, sneeze into your elbow or shoulder and use a tissue to cover SANITIZER
your mouth when you cough. This will help prevent getting all of the germs into the air and
all over the place, as well as protecting yourself from getting the germs on your hands. IF SOAP AND WATER ARE NOT AVAILABLE
Always remember to Keep your immune system strong and
healthy by eating well, exercising regularly, and getting a
good night’s sleep!

Why should I shower &
brush my teeth daily?
Taking a shower daily is important to do to stay healthy.
After a long day of school and play, bacteria and germs
from the things you touched throughout the growth of your
body. They hide inside dark and warm places in your body,
like your armpits and in between your fingers. You
have to wash your body with soap and water to get rid of
these bacteria and germs. If you don’t, they grow and grow.
Eventually they will enter your body, it can make you sick.
Also, it can make you really stinky! So much so that you
might even make the dog run away!
Brushing and flossing your teeth daily is also import-
ant to stay healthy. Even though you may think that
just brushing your teeth will keep them clean, there
are very tiny spaces between your teeth that get
food stuck in there. The food will literally be stuck in
there until it is removed. The bacteria love to eat
sugar. Bacteria are tiny little things that eats the
sugars and they produce waste that is called acid.
This acid slowly creates holes in your teeth called
cavities. OH NO! You have to use dental floss to
get all of the tiny pieces of food OUT! If the food
is left in between your teeth for a long time, bacte-
rial starts to build up. This is called plaque. It is
sticky but you can’t see it. If it continues to build up,
your gums will start to hurt. Then, you can’t eat your
favorite foods without yelling, “OUCH!”
