INCIDENT REPONSE

In providing this framework, we remain indebted to schools around the world that have
weathered the peaks of this virus and from whose experiences mitigating the associated
risks, we have learned. We are grateful to AAIE, Tri-Association, the Office of Overseas
Schools, the Nicaraguan Ministry of Education, and many excellent international schools
that have shared resources with us (notably Mount Vernon School, Lake Mary Preparatory
School, Grandview Preparatory School, Graded, and the International School of Basel).
We are grateful to the ANS Return to Campus Task Force for laying the groundwork for
the associated protocols that allow for the implementation of these plans.

WELCOME

Dear Families and Colleagues,
The American Nicaraguan School is committed to the safety and wellbeing of all staff, students, and families. It
is our goal with this plan to facilitate choice among our stakeholders that enables all families to make decisions
that they are comfortable with regarding their child’s return to campus.
Providing clarity and responding to uncertainty, ANS is sharing Windows, our reunification plan, exploring
topics on what to expect for launching the 2020-2021 school year.
The ANS reopening will be closely guided by these principles:
• At all times we will keep the health and safety of our community foremost in our minds
• We will follow the guidelines set out by the World Health Organization and Center for Disease Control as
well as following established best practice from other schools around the world.
• We will keep our ANS beliefs and core values first and foremost as we consider our decisions.
• We will focus on the essentials of learning but not at the expense of the social-emotional wellbeing of our
students and staff.
• We will make modifications to our program in accordance with changes to the situation.
• We will provide clear expectations for all of our stakeholders: students, staff, and parents.
• We will safeguard the trust vested in us through transparent decision-making.

While we know that our campus is the best home for our ANS Community, as a mission-driven school, we
have faith that regardless of the challenges posed to us and although our experience will take different shapes
this year, we will: “provide our multicultural student community with a US-accredited college preparatory
program, based on democratic and universal values, that develops critical thinkers and ethical individuals
capable of realizing their leadership potential by making meaningful contributions to society.”

HIGH LEVEL RISK - DISTANCE LEARNING PLATFORM

As we begin the school year, and as it is required at any point this school year, we are confident in our
ability to provide a robust distance learning experience.

HOW CAN WINDOWS SHED LIGHT ON BEING A MEMBER OF A GLOBAL COMMUNITY?

The Distance Learning Plan prioritizes three learning goals:

- Ensure that students continue to make progress on grade-level standards and learning goals.

- Maximize student learning and maintain high expectations with developmentally appropriate schedules for synchronous and
asynchronous learning.

- Ensure all students are encouraged and supported by establishing individual or small group support for students.

MODERATE LEVEL RISK - HYBRID MODEL

The hybrid model may be necessary under certain health conditions and in mitigating community spread of the
virus. The AM/PM shifts reduce the number of teachers and students on campus at any given time combined with
synchronous/asynchronous learning on the days that students are at home. The small group structure provides students
with an intensive instructional model that allows for highly personalized learning, conferencing and feedback.

Students with the highest level of needs, students with inclusion plans and language needs, may receive additional
school-based instruction to best meet their needs. Some dedicated distance-learning staff will continue off-site during
the hybrid model to limit the interaction among people.

DISTANCING DESIGNS

BY MAKING ADJUSTMENTS TO THE SIZE OF OUR COHORTS
OF STUDENTS AND TO LEARNING SPACES, ON-CAMPUS

LEARNING BECOMES POSSIBLE AT A MODERATE-RISK LEVEL.

HOW CAN WINDOWS SHED LIGHT ON BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS?

According to the CDC, “keeping space between you and others is one of
the best tools we have to avoid being exposed to the virus.” To practice
physical distancing, the CDC recommends:
- Stay at least 2 meters (6 feet) from other people
- Do not gather in large groups
- Rearrange furniture and seating spaces to maximize space
- Follow visual aids in hallways that reflect traffic flow
- Avoid communal spaces

WINDOWS 9

Physical Distancing:

- Everyone on campus and on school grounds must maintain a 2 meter (6 feet) distance between themselves and any other
individual.
- Pathways (3 and 4 year olds), Kindergarten, First-Grade and Second-Grade will not enforce physical distancing in the
classrooms.
- In spaces where it is not possible to maintain this distance, a line must form outside with all those waiting conforming to
physical distancing rules.
- Physical distancing markers will be prominently displayed in hallways and other areas.
- Hallways and stairwells in the Secondary School will be designated as “one way only” and all those on campus must adhere to
these designations.
- Physical distancing applies in classrooms, hallways, and other areas in school.

Especially in the Primary School, students will be kept together in cohorts as much as possible throughout the day in order to
reduce the risk of contamination and to be better able to isolate the concern when there is a member of that cohort that has
been exposed to Covid-19 or has symptoms.
Especially in the Primary School, the number of rooms that a student is in throughout the day will be limited. The spacing
between student seating areas in the classroom will be increased as much as the classroom space allows. The number of adults
entering classrooms will be reduced to a minimum as much as possible.
Our youngest students (3 year olds through 2nd grade) will not have physical distancing enforced in their classrooms as it is
the belief of the school administration that this is psychologically harmful to young children. Social interaction is a critical part
of a child’s growth and development and imposing physical distancing on young children can be detrimental to their social and
emotional well-being.

Physical Shields

In the classroom, plexiglass shields will be installed to provide a physical barrier between teachers and students for small group
instruction and conferencing. Plexiglass shields will be installed at tables for students and on individual desks in the Secondary
School.
In the restrooms, plexiglass shields will be installed in the primary and secondary office spaces as well as between sinks and
urinals. In the office areas, plexiglass shields will be installed on desks.
Lunch will be suspended for the first phase of returning to campus. Once students are attending school for a full school day,
we will consider recommendations for space and provisions.

Arrival and Dismissal

The following protocols are in effect to insure the wellbeing of all members of the ANS community. Compliance
with these protocols is expected from all community members.

General Expectations

- During all movement in and around the parking lots, all persons must adhere to physical distancing guidelines of 2
meters (6 feet) of separation from all others.

- Strict start and end times for cohorts must be adhered to with timely transportation arrangements.

An updated traffic flow system facilitates car-based drop off to alleviate the pedestrian flow, providing children a
safe and supervised route to their classrooms. Painted Tiger Paw Prints indicate safe distancing at each gate.

Arrival

Students are to be dropped-off at the designated gate. All students file directly to their own classrooms, with the
exception of Pathways and Kindergarten

Pathways & Kindergarten will meet their teacher at Gate 1

Dismissal

Students are to be dropped-off at the designated gate. All students file directly to their own classrooms, with the
exception of Pathways and Kindergarten

Students will use the same gates for both arrival and dismissal. Family groups can use Gate 4 for pick-up only. All
other students are picked up, individually, at their designated gate.

As the car approaches each gate, a sign on the dashboard of the vehicle will
facilitate dismissal. Screens at each gate will allow students to recognize their

turn, with the support of staff members.

SUPPORTING
FAMILIES

Supporting Students

Reconnecting with students at the beginning of and throughout the 2020-2021 school year, bridging potential gaps, and
reinforcing foundational skills will be priorities for our teachers. The strength of the innovative mission and vision of ANS
is the foundational relationship between a student and teacher, collaborating on campus together. The fuel for motivation,
engagement, and belonging is discovered through relationships in the classroom.

Meaningful connections that ground us and even transform us are nurtured most effectively in person.
The school remains committed to designing and advancing programs of study that reflect foundational knowledge, deepen
the skills and dispositions of learners and respond to a changing world where learners are able to experience, engage and
impact all scales of community in authentic and real-world contexts. Field trips and community service experiences may
have to be reimagined.
The reimagined schedules and cohorts will require an intense focus on core courses, foundational skills to maximize the
student experience. Regardless, documenting the demonstrations of learning and progressions toward mastery are the top
objective to optimize full engagement, deep learning, and contributions of students.

To provide support in transitioning from distance learning back to hybrid, blended or
campus-based learning, we have implemented the following:

- Our leadership and teachers participated in summer professional development to improve
our capacity to deliver high-impact instruction through distance learning.

- We launched robust summer learning opportunities for students in reading and math.

- Students will receive one on one targeted assessment interviews during the first week of
school to determine where extra academic support is needed.

- We will increase the amount of extra instructional support for students.

Creating a System of Support

The Support Team at ANS is geared up for supporting
students this school year. Counseling support will be
provided at all grade levels and counselors will reach
out to students who are facing challenges in staying on
track with the expectations for learning.

Due to the severity of health implications for students
who are non-compliant with protocols, students who
are not able to meet the expectations for physical
distancing and follow the health and safety protocol
outlined in this document will not be permitted to stay
on campus and will have to remain at home to continue
with the Blended Learning Model.

It is up to all adults on campus to monitor the emotional
and physical well-being of all students under our new
protocols and be prepared to take action if necessary.
Parents are asked to discuss with their children the
grave implications of not following safety protocols.

We will pay particular attention to the following
situations on campus and manage each with a clear

goal to keep all members of the community safe:

1. Students who are reluctant to come to school
or remain at school due to separation issues from
parents, fear of becoming infected, make excuses to
go home on a frequent basis, or refuse to come to
school in general.

2. Social emotional concerns related to the new
protocols, new teacher, etc.

3. Behavioral or disciplinary concerns, and in
particular those that jeopardize the well-being of
others.

4. General academic concerns related to the
Distance Learning Platform or other reasons.

5. Chronically late or absent students (i.e. those
slated to come to school but not coming)

6. Child protection issues

WINDOWS 13

Supporting Parents

ANS recognizes our increased responsibility to engage parents as partners with us in teaching and learning.
Without our normal routines of being able to bring our children to school each morning and interact with
other parents on a daily basis, we are innovating solutions to build a sense of community.
We want parents to understand the design of our instructional plans and model ideas about supporting
this learning at home. As we implement new designs for high-impact instruction, it is our goal that parents
understand these methods so that they can reinforce and extend them at home.

All parents will be invited to participate in a week-long module of
webinars with school administration:

be provided by the school.
• During Distance Learning, kits will be provided as needed.
• During Hybrid or Campus-based Learning, materials and supplies will be provided and available within
the classrooms.
• Materials from 2019-20 will be put to use for this school year, and Supply Lists will not be sent this year.

cleaned and sanitized using approved, hospital grade
cleaners.

During the school day and throughout the year, frequent
sanitization of soft and hard surfaces, electronics and

Sanitization will also include safe disposal of daily clinical
waste and the cleaning of school vehicles that transport
students and staff.

Handrails, door handles, light switches, and all other areas frequently touched will be sanitized on a continuous
basis throughout the day by specially trained maintenance personnel.

Bathrooms will be sanitized on a continuous basis throughout the day by specially trained maintenance personnel.

Water fountains will be available within classrooms and removed from hallways.

PERSONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY

The CDC and WHO advise the use of simple cloth face coverings to slow the spread of the virus and help people
who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others.

Masks must be worn at all time while on campus: from the time a student exits their vehicle, on campus, throughout
the day, upon departure from the gates, and until they are safely in their vehicles. Masks must be worn over nose
and mouth. Failure to comply will be considered a disciplinary offense and be handled accordingly.

FACE COVERINGS

BE MANDATORY FOR OUR
YOUNGEST STUDENTS.

(3 YEAR OLDS THROUGH 2ND GRADE)

Early studies suggest lower rates of infection and transmission in younger children (Primary compared to
Secondary in one community). Young children use others’ faces to learn how to acquire meaning, read emotions
and feel a sense of trust.

In addition, young children tend to touch their faces, even more, when they have a mask which will significantly
reduce the benefits of wearing a mask. Rather, we will rely upon frequent handwashing, and increased cleaning
routines will be implemented in these younger-age classrooms. For young children who would like to wear masks,
we will provide training and support.

It is suggested that parents prepare their children to wear masks by practicing at home before we return to
campus.

While spaces will be designed to support physical distancing, teachers of our youngest
students (3 years old though 2nd grade) will not enforce physical distancing in the
classrooms.

Pathways (3 and 4 year olds) is a play-based program. While all cleaning and sanitation
requirements will be in effect, it is expected that children will share and play together.

Lockers will not be in use at the Secondary level. Students will continue to use digital
resources and are asked to bring only what is required for each day of class.

Under no circumstances will students share materials (rulers, pens, books, etc.) This
includes electronic devices and chargers. In cases where items need to be exchanged,

Sick Faculty, Staff and Students:

Faculty, staff or students who have any signs of illness shall not attend school or come to campus.

• Faculty and staff are to report any signs of illness to Dr. Gertrudis and corresponding school administrators.

• In order to streamline attendance tracking across classes and divisions, any absences must be reported to the Records Officer, who
will receive this correspondence and ensure proper reporting and communication to divisional offices and teachers. Confidentiality
of student records will remain paramount in our documentation and communication.

• Parent emails [email protected] stating: Child’s name, Grade and section and reason for absence. Please be specific about
your child’s symptoms to help Doctor Gertrudis study the patterns of symptoms in our school.

• Students can return to campus 48 hours after they are no longer showing any symptoms of illness, or any fever and are checked
and cleared by school medical personnel.

• Students must be fever free without the use of antipyretics (fever reducing medicines).

• Often children want to come to school, even if they are not feeling well. Please use your best parental judgment when assessing
the health of your child. Exercising our social responsibility by missing a day of school to keep others safe is more important than any
work missed.

Please be sure all of your emergency contact information is updated with the school office. If you have any questions, please

Clinic & Family Liaison

Any contact with Covid-19 suspected or confirmed cases must be immediately reported to our Clinic Secretary at
[email protected].
Transparent information is crucial for prevention and containment. The school will respect the confidentiality of these cases,
safeguarding the family’s right to privacy, throughout the ensuing contact tracing. In support of families during any suspected
contact with Covid-19, Admissions Coordinator, Andrea Medrano, will serve in a support role as a family liaison if:
• A family member is a suspected Covid-19 case.
• The family resides with someone who is a suspected Covid-19 case, and/or has come in direct contact within a 14-day period with
someone who is a suspected Covid-19 case.

Failure to communicate this critical information for the well-being of our school community is reprehensible.

Incident Response:

Following CDC guidelines, if a student or employee has a fever, shows symptoms or is suspect of being Covid-19
positive, our response team will adhere to the CDC procedures:
• Isolate the student or employee, ensure that students are not left without adult supervision, establish a plan to transport home.
• Notify staff and families immediately of any possible case of Covid-19 while maintaining privacy and confidentiality
• Close off areas used by any sick person and do not use them until they have been disinfected.
• Advise sick person not to return to campus until they have met the CDC criteria to discontinue home isolation.
• Inform anyone exposed to a person diagnosed with Covid-19 to stay home and monitor symptoms, and to follow CDC guidance
if symptoms develop.

As necessary, temporary school, division or section closure to allow for deep cleaning and sanitizing of the entire building.
