Foreword by the CALC Director

Assalamualaikum w.b.t and greetings,

First and foremost, congratulations to the English Language Division for successfully
organising the Virtual LAX Day event. LAX Day is a special programme organised annually
to provide a platform for students to celebrate and showcase their work to the UPM
community. It is the highlight of LAX, which was first introduced in 2013 when the English
Language Experience (ELEx) Package was implemented. With the ongoing pandemic, LAX
Day shifts to an online platform to keep the vision alive in line with the current situation. It
is indeed my pleasure to welcome everyone to virtually experience LAX Day and applaud the
effort and the hard work that the students have put into.

LAX plays a vital role in increasing students’ level of confidence to interact in English. With
this initiative, we aim to equip students with the necessary skills to make them stand out from
other graduates and to market themselves better in the highly competitive job market. LAX
activities are student-centered and place emphasis on soft skills as well as creativity through
thoroughly planned activities outside the limits of their classrooms. In addition to increasing
their level of confidence, LAX Day activity also helps in enhancing the students’
communication skills in English thus increasing their marketability.

With LAX Day’s tagline, “Enjoy and Experience”, it is hoped that students do enjoy and
experience the benefits of LAX activities. Make this a lifelong process of continuous English
language learning through creative and fun project-based learning. It is through enjoyment and
experience that you learn best.

Last but not least, I would like to extend my deepest appreciation to the organising committee
for their commitment and hard work in making this programme a success. May this
programme continue to bring lifelong benefits to UPM students.

Assalamualaikum w.b.t and greetings,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome all of you to LAX Day 2021 organised
by the Centre for the Advancement of Language Competence (CALC), Universiti Putra
Malaysia. This is our first virtual LAX Day, which makes this arrangement unique
for everyone. The unexpected outbreak of COVID-19 has inevitably
brought this face-to-face programme to a completely virtual one.

LAX Day is held annually and is a one-day programme that allows the students to exhibit
their work to the UPM community. It is also held to expose students to the variety of LAX
activities that they can engage in throughout their studies in UPM. It is also a day when
other entities in UPM can get to know LAX better.

The LAX component is an innovative aspect of the English Language Experience (ELEx)
Package that was introduced in 2013. It is co-curricular-based and provides beyond-
classroom language activities aimed at building students’ confidence and fluency in speaking
in English. LAX allows students the freedom to choose when and where to meet in their
groups. The idea of communicating in English in an environment where they are not being
corrected by teachers and with little or no fear of being ridiculed can be a fulfilling learning
experience for the students.

It is hoped that with LAX activities and LAX Day, UPM students will be more confident
to use English in their everyday communication.

Finally, I would like to thank the organising committee in making this programme possible.

LAX Day Director

Assalamualaikum w.b.t and greetings,

This year we celebrate our fourth LAX Day! The annual LAX Day is organised by the
English Language Proficiency Division, Centre for the Advancement and Language
Competence (CALC), Universiti Putra Malaysia. It is no surprise that the pandemic affected
our plan in a big way. Originally scheduled for November 2020 at Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah
Hall, we had to take the inevitable and a safer route by organising it virtually this year.
Having said that, organising LAX Day 2021 virtually is an essential learning curve for the
organising committee. I believe that, through the online platform, we are able to reach and
engage with a wider audience especially our students.

This is the first virtual LAX Day that will engage students with competitions, exhibition
and forum across the globe. With the title “LAX: The Hidden Gem for Students’
Development”, the forum offers an insightful sharing with our distinguished panelists. In
addition to that, our students will have the chance to witness the first ever virtual BlogSpot
for our LAX Day which displayed our students’ works and their videos. We adapted well
indeed! In this completely revamped LAX Day, innovatively devised by the current
Organising Committee, our LAX Day will be streamed live via our official CALC Facebook
page. It looks like our online teaching experience for the past few semesters contributed a lot
to this extreme confidence. We were sceptical to move bravely at first, but we persevered.
This effort deserves a special mention of gratitude from me, the Project Director of LAX
Day 2021.

Once again, I would like to thank all of you for your participation in our LAX Day.
Hopefully, the pleasure you will experience with us throughout the three hours will make
the hours seem short. Enjoy yourself!

Centre for the Advancement of Language Competence (CALC)

OBJECTIVE

LAX was first introduced when the English Language Experience Package (ELEx) was
implemented in 2013. LAX plays an important role in enhancing students’
communication skills in English. The objective of LAX is to increase students’ level of
confidence to interact in English in a fun, flexible and non-stressful environment. As a
student-centred activity, LAX provides the opportunity to utilise English outside class
hours. Moreover, students have the ability to develop personality, soft skills as well as
creativity through LAX activities.

LAX Day is a platform for students to showcase their work to the UPM community as
well as to promote the LAX component and Putra ELEx package which are offered by
CALC. In essence, LAX Day celebrates students involvement and commitment in their
journey to be highly proficient in the English language.

PANELISTS INFORMATION

Puan Norlida Binti Abu Bakar
Puan Norlida is the Head of English Language Proficiency
Division, CALC. She has taught English in UPM for 34 years. She
has wide experience and knowledge in teaching and developing
English proficiency courses in UPM.

Puan Fauziah Hanim Ahmad Shaari
Puan Fauziah started her career as a language teacher at UPM in
2006. As an experienced English language teacher, she has initiated
several English language activities for UPM students. She was
previously the coordinator for the English Language Activity Unit
coordinating LAX activities before being appointed as the Deputy
Director of CALC.

PANELIST INFORMATION

Wan Hariz Halia
Wan Hariz graduated with Bachelor of Arts in Foreign
Language (German) from Universiti Putra Malaysia in 2020. He
was a member of the Student Supreme Council of the Twelfth
College (Majlis Tertinggi Mahasiswa), UPM. Currently, he is an
executive in a non-profit organisation and has extensive
experience in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Social
Impact initiatives, especially in the education sector.

Clerence Lewin Champin

Clerence is a third year Bachelor of Engineering in Computer and
Communication System student. He is very passionate about life and
nature. Clerence is also an environmental activist. During his free
time, he joins volunteering programmes that are involved in public
welfare.
